I was expecting this response sooner or later => a camera is for photos and a videorecorder is for videos; use the right tool for the job.
Unfortunately this statement doesn't reflect where the market has gone.

Congratulations. Just play with it. The K5 is a very intuitive camera with lots of dedicated buttons and switches as opposed to the more menu driven controls of some other Pentaxes. Also update the firmware.

Ah, nice :) Well, the usual advice is to upgrade lenses before going for a new body, but you're all set. If you go for the K-3, I know you'll be impressed with it...
And thumbs up on the L2 BTEC Distinction! :)

For me going light means sticking my DA18-135WR on my K5 and taking nothing else. I must have gotten an awesome copy because I can pixel peep with mine! Primes needed to cover that range would actually weigh more and take more space.

Another advantage of a fast lens is the brighter image in the viewfinder. This can be useful, especially if focusing manually (where additionally the reduced DOF makes focusing more precise).

Thanks for the feedback all. I ended up buying the combo and managed to finally get it unpacked yesterday. The tripod is heavy, but fully extended it is very tall - enough that you can almost get an above the crowd shot, and certainly tall enough for me. The head is big - with all the levers attached it isn't the easiest thing to pack. But it seems to work well, and with the vertical rotation not fully locked, has a smooth enough movement to track slow moving kids.
