I have been looking for out-of-box solutions for both my scanner and camera scans for negatives and slides. Here is what I found. Once I get back digitizing my film I will be investing in both the software solutions that will allow for dng and Lightroom PP.

I have the Epson V600 scanner and really like the results for scanning negatives and slides. The downside is that it is very time consuming and it does not scan to dng. RAW is just the best for pp in Lightroom. However I found a solution, a better scan software that will scan to dng. It is VueScan Software VueScan Scanner Software for macOS, Windows, and Linux It offers digital ice along with color restoration. There are many negs and slides I will gladly put the time into for high rez digital images.

However, I also have several thousand family pix, that don't need the quality of a scanner. This is where the next tool comes in. I ordered a dslr film / slide scan kit on ebay. I am waiting for it to arrive from China. Yea I don't particularly like buying Chinese products, but no one else makes a complete kit like this. Pentax lenses are not in their list, but I verified that my Pentax 35mm Macro Limited will work just fine. This will allow me to digitize film much quicker in dng raw for post processing. Here is a link to the kit. There are three options, Adapter with LED Light is the complete kit.

35mm Film Digitizing Adapter+LED Light Set Negative Scanner Holder as Nikon ES-2 | eBay
There is still the problem of converting negatives into positives from a camera scan. No problem, Negative Lab Pro is a plugin for Lightroom that makes this easy to do. Negative Lab Pro

I have been reviewing some of the yt videos to see the software in action.

I found it on their website. Lots of quality bookmarks, but a bit expensive. $28 with shipping to the US.

Bookmark Camera In Brass Metal

The seller / website is legitimate and payment can be made safely through razorpay, similar to paypal. The camera bookmark was only $6, the rest is shipping. If the shipping was not so high I would have bought a couple.

Photo Effects | Buy Photo Retouching Software & Effects Software - ON1

Just wanted to share the joy... link above
ON1 Photo Effects Software 100% Free in January Reg $69.99 FREE till Jan 31

ON1 Effects works as a standalone application on Mac or Windows or as a plugin for Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, Apple Photos, Capture One, Affinity Photo, and Corel PSP.

I downloaded and installed it. Played with it a little and I love it. It won't replace Lightroom Classic, but is sufficiently robust and super easy to use. Lots of options for RAW processing along video tutorials. I will delve into it more as I have time.

If you download it and use it, please comment in this thread on how you like it and how you find it useful.

Extent of photo manipulation in early film days

RonH thank you for your late but helpful comments. We now understand it is a misplaced argument that post processing is detrimental to the art of photography. It is not a bad thing, rather it is part of the artistic process dating back over 170 years. In every field of communication there are some utilizing their skills to deceive. We see this today in radio, television, news, and the internet. But that in no way negates the benefit and pleasure we get from those mediums as art and entertainment. Same with photography. The final take-away is that photographic post processing is a part of and a final step in the creative process. That taking a photo is not genuinely complete or finalized until the post processing is done and the image shared.

Because of the very good SOOC jpg quality casual or enthusiast shooters can enjoy photography without post processing. However the artistic aspect of photography can only be fully appreciated and experienced by manipulating and adjusting a photo to ones taste and satisfaction. IMHO

That being said, I encourage every SOOC buff to consider shooting RAW + JPG and try post processing their images. Then compare them against the SOOC jpg. There are several free RAW image editors available to learn with.

Extent of photo manipulation in early film days

I grew up shooting film, until 1999 when I purchased my first digital camera. Back then the best editing program was Paint Shop Pro. Since I was not trying to emulate the great photographers, I never post processed my images. SOOC was the standard.

Going back to my film days, I did not have a darkroom to develop b&w. I grew up on b&w tv and with Kodachrome and other color films readily available I quickly gravitated to color. Thus I had all my film developed for me.

I got my first dslr in 2016 and did not know any better than shooting jpg. But because I sell antique paper on ebay it became a quest of mine to display sharp and accurately colored images. That is where I learned the value of shooting RAW and I will never go back to SOOC. Once I started using Lightroom Classic and the speedy workflow it provides, as long as I take pictures I will maintain my Adobe subscription.

I know the video has an underlying agenda, but I just ignored that and focused on the presentation and research. I figured everyone here is sharp enough to ignore the junk.

I hope it is ok to post this here.

Late 19th and 20th century film post processing was widely done, no differently from what we do today with digital RAW.

I recently learned that early dedicated photographers dating back to the 1850's were heavily post processing their photographs. Not just dodging and burning, but masking, retouching, in-painting, removing parts of the image or adding to the image. So in modern terms, most every professional film negative was to some degree photo shopped. Yes, really! I was blown away to learn this. Even in historical photographs one can see this having been done by looking closely. So these images are not genuine representations of the past but rather what the photographer wants to convey. As we do when we post process.

Here is an in depth video showing the extent of the manipulation of negatives and the developing process.

Ricoh announces PENTAX K-3 Mark III Monochrome digital SLR camera | Markets Insider

I have been waiting since the first inkling of a Pentax monochrome. I believe this could be their best selling camera. The market opens up to users of every other camera maker for true digital monochrome without having to go the Leica route. The camera will be affordable, the lenses are plentiful and affordable too.

Six different versions of the Pentax K-3 Mark III

IMHO I think that the Monochrome version will be a BIG hit. I know I will buy one and have the lenses waiting to be used on it. I cannot afford a Leica, nor would I want one. But a Pentax Monochrome, yes for sure. The price on a K3 III now is $1700 and I read somewhere the new versions will be about a 25% increase, so we are looking at about $2200. Even $2500 would be worth it.

I also think there are a lot of folks that would crossover to Pentax to get a true monochrome dslr in that price range. Articulating screen or flash is not a deal breaker by any means for me. I never use the articulating screen on my K-70 now.

I am anxiously awaiting it's arrival and am saving for it already.

I began my Pentax journey in June of 2020 and was immediately smitten by the brand. I shoot both a K-5 and K-70. I take several hundred photos a week with the K-5 for my online sales. So the K-70 is for personal use only, not wanting to subject it to so many clicks. I would love to go K-70 all the way, one for work and one for play.
