Pentax K-70 Giveaway Rainbow Bee Eaters

These lovely little birds migrate 2000km to nest in Perth WA each year. I passed my K5 on to a student on exchange here from France as he was interested in photography .. an old school buddy (from 1974) who has had a rough time of late is using my QS1 as therapy to get out shoot and do something, I would love to be able to gift him the K70 as it would be the perfect starter camera for him.. and he would be able to join in with the Perth Pentax User Group.. fingers crossed for Noel

  1. Share your favorite photo taken between November 25th - December 31st, 2021 (no specific theme)

  2. Tell us what camera(s) you currently shoot with

  3. Tell us what how the K-70 would improve your current kit:
    • Why do you need a K-70 and how would you use it?

    • Is there anything you currently can't do that you'd be able to do with the K-70?

I started shooting with Pentax in 2013. I bought a used K-x and (coming from the point-and-shoot world) I was immediately blown away by its picture quality and low-light performance. I really, really liked that small camera.
But it had it's flaws - over time the exposure accuracy decreased and when I was shooting through viewfinder, I had to bump the exposure sometimes by 1EV.

In 2017 I bought a used K-50. At first it was wonderful - it had the per lens focus adjustment, so I could buy more lenses and have precise focus with every of them - in theory. In reality the K-50 had its own flaws .....
First came the 'demon of the aperture failure'. The aperture started to malfunction very soon, but I found a good technician who repaired it.
Then the camera lost it's ability to focus - either through the viewfinder or through the LiveView, it is not as sharp as it used to be, no matter how hard I try. It hunts a lot even in decent light.

Therefore now I use my smartphone as my primary camera... after all these years :(

So yes, there would be plenty of what I'd be able to do with the K-70 - I'd be able to grab my lenses from the shelf and start using them again! I have some very good vintage lenses (M-50 f1.7, M-135 f3.5 ....)
Below is the picture of my daughter. I'd love to have a proper camera to make nice pictures of her.

Well, all files are 100% save.
I didn't have the debug-modes for the K-S1, K-S2 and KP so now I have them and they work fine.

Night Farmstead Northern Lights

I had been down at the beach of my parents farm waiting for the weak northern lights to make a burst, but I had waited a while and I could also hear a rogue bull from a farm up the road in our yard. Fearing an attack from a spooked bull in the dark of night, I decided to pack it in. I got up to the house and looked out the window to see that the lights I had been waiting for just exploded. While being north enough to see events as little as KP 2/3, it's not quite north enough to use an exposure less than 30s and an ISO less than 1600, unless the display is KP6 or up. I think this night was predicted to be a KP3.
I stepped out onto their deck and shot a quick little panorama of the yard under the lights.

Dumbleyung Lake has its claim to fame as being the place where Donald Campbell broke the water speed record on the last day of 1964, becoming the first ( and only ) person to break both the land and water speed records in one year.

Aside from this superb distinction, it's also a favourite place of mine to shoot!

This is a very recent photo, at the tail end of a night's shooting. I had an idea/concept that I wanted to try, and so I gave it a go to see if it would work.
The weather was fairly calm, although a light breeze picked up occasionally. The quarter moon had set earlier in the night, and so I set up my camera facing west and took nearly 90 minute's worth of 2-minute exposures on Bulb mode. These I stacked in post to gain the star trails. The stars had a little bit of a zipper pattern - especially in the reflection in the water when there had been a breeze - so I applied a radial blur in post to smooth them out. I had light-painted the trees at the end of the shoot to bring out some detail, and I merged them over the top to bring out some detail rather than just having them as dark silhouettes.

The photo of myself with the umbrella was taken much earlier in the evening at another spot near the shore of the lake, probably just after Blue Hour had finished. The moon was behind me, and illuminated my back a bit. That photo was taken with the Sigma Art 35mm f1.4, and was a 15 second exposure @ f2.2, ISO 6400. I cut and pasted it into the photo where I had envisaged, and scaled it against the tree.

The photo is a composite!! ( necessary yet somewhat superfluous disclaimer ;) )

The glow on the horizon is probably the street lights of the town of Wagin, around 35 km's away reflecting off the clouds.

All-in-all, I was pretty happy with how it turned out :)

Here's some dust in the IC 360 area of Taurus taken with my K3 through a Borg 55FL f/3.6 astrograph. Total of 48x 180s exposures with calibration frames. I did this from my front yard this past Wednesday evening.

Found this image tonight and re-edited for your viewing pleasure. Bokeh courtesy of the venerable SMC-Takumar 50mm f1.4 shot wide open on the KP. Definitely have to use this one more often. May not be as sharp WO as a modern nifty fifty, but it works for me.
