Has anyone used the Pentax 645 HD 35mm F3.5 AL, D FA 645 55mm f/2.8 AL SDM AW or FA 90mm F2.8 ED AW SR lenses on a Pentax 645 film body? Any samples you can share?

I’m delighted by this conversation. I bought a 645D and 645Z in 2021. I have my D up for sale on the forum right now but if it doesn’t sell I’ve decided I’m forever set with these two bodies.
I’ve shot nearly every Sony, Fuji and Canon in the race to try what is new but at the end of the day, the Pentax 645 system makes me happiest. It’s about not only the image quality but the ergonomics and robust nature of the bodies that prompts me to choose Pentax over all the other manufacturers. I shoot family and doc style work and find it’s just as capable as anything I’ll ever need.

I absolutely adore the 90mm. Wouldn't sell it for the world. It will be with me as long as I have the camera itself and while I also have the 120mm and have seen nice work with the 67 105mm, the stabilization makes the 90mm truly one of a kind.

I think it totally depends on your style. I use my 645D as my everyday carry and absolutely love it. Everything is sharp enough for my taste my my intent is less about critical correctness and more impressionistic. I love mine so much that I’m upgrading to a Z and about to sell my D if you’re interested. Happy to chat via DM if you like. Selling mine for a song and it’s very young actuation-wise. Naturally the Ricoh GRI II and III. Fantastic cameras but sans that viewfinder you mentioned, which led me to sell mine. Instead I got the Lumix GM5 with the 20mm 1.7. Beautiful and amazing pocketable kit that offers lens versatility as well as a big sensor, PLUS viewfinder. |

Some shots from my new old Pentax 645D which I absolutely love and adore. All wide open and SOOC.

Strange question but I always shoot raw and post process my images. Does this negate any of the color advantages I hear about with the CCD sensor? Debating 645D vs 645Z.

I love the Pentax K70 which I recently purchased after falling under the spell of some old photos I captured with my once beloved K7. My question is this: I also bought the 31mm limited lens because that was my go to in the old days but I feel like it's not quite performing as I expected or remembered. I still like it don't get me wrong, but I always use center point focus in the middle of my frame and notice it's often not nailing the faces of the people I'm photographing. In fairness, the faces are small (kids) and maybe I have been spoiled by modern focus but is this normal at all? Here is a sampling of photos shot using back button focus, center point af on the face. I've also tested the lens and tried micro adjusting the focus but a) on a tripod shot in live view on self timer, the focus seemed spot on in my tests. However when I tried changing the micro adjustment just to see how it would look with one shot for every increment both minus and plus, I could literally see not one iota of difference between the shots. Am I missing something altogether here?

It's been a minute but I just wanted to circle back with a moment of gratitude. First, this forum is an endless stream of joy for me. I love reading about everyone's Pentax experiences. As for my LX, she is operating perfectly again. I cannot say thank you enough. It seems she was just a bit out of practice and with all your tips to get her back into action, she's once again good as new. My heart sings.

I love all the dialogue and perspectives! Here's my pickle.
The LX is an old flame, a camera I loved but which I experienced problems with. She's all fixed now but the hiccups have made me nervous. Lovely to shoot though but I don't change the finders and don't do anything particularly special with my photography so I really just need a reliable and fast camera I can capture my family with. So that makes me wonder if I need the brute strength of the LX. I do shoot aperture priority most of the time but seeing as the Super Program can do that and I have one that was just completely and beautifully overhauled to be like new, I'm wondering if it's time to let go of my love affair with the LX.
I happened to score a deal on a beater of an MX recently. I'll need to fix her up a bit but I confess to love some of the automation available in the Super Program. I know the Super Program doesn't meter off the film like the LX does but if I shoot negs rather than positives, is that precision even necessary? I am starting to think that I should keep the Super Program AND the MX as a back up but that also seems like overkill when I consider how many other film cameras I have (rangefinders mostly).
I could also just admit and accept that I have a GAS problem and keep all three :P

This may be an absurd conversation to start but assuming you had the option of either the MX, LX or Super Program, each in solidly working condition, which would you choose as the best intersection of practicality, ergonomic enjoyment, end result and why? For example, I love the LX but part of me thinks it's impractical due to expense and seemingly inevitable and eternal failure, but am I wrong? State your case and help me choose.

The Ebay seller was apologetic and sent me a refund without any issue and told me to keep the lens. It's sent me down the YouTube rabbit hole and I have ordered a lens spanner to see if I can get in there and fix or it or at least learn about the lens construction with this lovely piece of glass.

Out of curiosity are you watching with the volume up? It's maybe easier to actually hear how the lens jams up as I change focus because of an interior ring misalignment. Definitely does not seem normal as I can’t got from near to far without gingerly rotating in hopes the treads align. I’ve tried to better capture it here though it’s tough to shoot one handed. This forum has been such a gold mine of knowledge that I hoped someone here would be able to help with another gear question. I bought the Pentax-M 100mm 2.8 on FleaBay and as I focus and head toward infinity, I noticed it would stop and jam up. Then I shook it an noticed the rattling sound and that there was a ring between the front element of the lens and the mount that was loose. I can get it back in place but if I adjust focus again, it shifts and I'm not able to change the focus until I realign the metal ring internally. Any idea what that ring is and to fix it? Do I just return the lens? Uploaded a video here to hopefully help illustrate the issue: Youtu.be |

Your tips have really appeared to have helped! The camera sounds as though it is exposing properly again. I'll be dropping off film for development tomorrow for confirmation but thank you! Now I have a question about my viewfinder. It appears quite dirty. I've taken off the prism, blown air, changed the focusing screen but it's still very dirty. Any suggestions?

This is the most incredible community. Thank you so so much for all the knowledge and tips! I'm going to try all of this and will report back. Very excited that this camera may still have the potential to be dusted off as my A cam!

No offense taken at all! Yes, fresh batteries, I've messed with the ISO, gone manual and back to automatic. The behavior is erratic so it does appear that it may be electronic in nature sadly. ---------- Post added 06-21-20 at 10:21 PM ----------
I went hunting online tonight and decided to go with a fully reconditioned Super Program, as well as a Pentax P-Z1 body (that came with a free Pentax ZX-5N body) and were being sold for peanuts, so I guess I'll have something to play with. Very different than the LX I realize but I mostly shoot my kids so thought it would be nice to have an autofocus option in the mix. Now if I can only decide on which lens to get....
