I do love having more experienced and well heeled friends who will let me sample a lens- first experience of Yashica lenses with the 50mm 1.9 Yashinon DS. I do say that bokeh is something beautiful to my eye.

Really fantastic shots that I'm sure most would dismiss the camera as incapable of. Hope you get the book together as it's a great concept.

Some wonderful images this week all, really setting that bar high! Kerrowdown, you definitely have some fellow fans of this subject and a tough job ahead.

Despite working with trees in my daily life, I'm no fan of photographing them- photographs of them fail to inspire me (beyond the technical skill you have all demonstrated!) they are some of the most challenging subjects to render with any kind of technical clarity I find, as well as composing a shot which can easily have no focus subject. But, I do enjoy a challenge :)

I'm going for a little different in shot with the use and integration of us in a woodland via some man-made paths.

Still finding myself mesmerised by Don's forks...had no idea a polarising filter would do that! Unless I've misunderstood what is meant by CPL?

For my object I present the humble loo (toilet) roll. Often the end result is never pretty, so I decided to try a magenta light makeover to give some beauty to Andrex- a most obliging model!

Interesting you point this out Normhead...there's been a few posts recently that have felt 'click bait'- the one about 'is photography dead?' being a prime example. All for a debate and some good alternative experiences, however some of what's popped up recently seems to lack this. Probably a case of hyper-awareness due to becoming aware of it...

So after a week of trying to nail this double exposure technique on a Polaroid 600, this was the sole 'success'. I've got a lot of respect for those who can nail this using the instant film!

Got to applaud the replies to this thread for remaining helpful. For what it's worth, courses and exams rarely cover the 'complete' or 'exact' information that a student expects- I'm an ex-lecturer and course designer, and this is often due to awarding bodie's demands on content based on an average approach (at least in the UK).

Photography....well, I've been enjoying this hobby for only a couple of years now; being of a middle age where I remember first playing with film cameras pre-digital and also being in education when digital was rolling in. Been in the same mind at times when starting about a perceived ease to create an image that wasn't really seen thanks to digital software...but thanks to spending time engaging with other open minds here, and just getting used to using a programme, I've come to a thought that people are partial to a nice piece of gatekeeping pie; and really, it's all personal and subjective- no two people share the same sight or view exactly.

There's too much pretentious grandstanding from a casual observation within some corners of the photography hobby- even down to titles, yet it is a creative expression, which rarely gives a damn about formal blessings of skill on paper.

Sounds like the bride and family had made their decision and we're trying to get the real event of the day enjoyed 🙂

Whilst I agree with Ramseybuckeye and Kristian, you won't be able to conduct a true comparison of parity, I do think the idea behind this thread had merit. Restricting the settings that we can all compare (base ISO (albeit I think 200 needs to be the base as old Nikon's such as mine don't go lower) aperture and shutter speed) but totally agree with Ramseybuckeye that you won't be able to control the lighting variables of the scene or the way different models deal with WB.

And everyone's eyes see colour and interpret this differently, so naturally some are more preferable to others, no getting around that.

It could be best to stick to a subject topic (eg flower, sunset, car etc) and have the agreed settings to post the pics.

Kristan, your pics are a good example as whilst the red sun is striking, it shows nothing of any resolution or advancement benefits a K3 objectively has over the K10D, due to the scene- the Greek sunset is, to my eye, the much nicer render.

And so far the images have veered from those settings with f8 being the set standard 😉.

I did the same when I started up with film last year- became guilty of pixel peeping and getting bothered by grain on 400 ISO film... took a while and some revisits and now see the enhanced beauty it can bring to the shot. It's also helped me to look more closely at the emulsions I've shot and what I like (Cinestill 800 is a must try for everyone; I believe it has produced my favourite all time shot!).

Ahh, true there is variation in the farming- I'm in the North West (coastal Lancashire) and It's a mix of arable and sheep It's something interesting I've come to spot though in many of the shots from people in the UK and that is the repetition of architecture, landscape scenery and urban areas. Unlike the members from the USA, Far East/Latin America and Europe, there is less exciting variation to my eye for the subjects. I will certainly agree some locations, be they areas of Scotland or the South Coast for example, have unique spots, but you are far less likely to happen upon a unique area and photo opportunity on this isle. Biased opinion naturally.

Great write up in your experience BigMackCam, I'm looking to get into home developing this year and hearing a novice at plays experience is damn fine encouragement.

Also, these are just the most 'British' shots possible- honestly amazes me how much I thought I was looking at some of my own (why does a field shot of sheep instantly make me see the UK countryside (not a positive to me 😅).

But some really nicely exposed and developed shots, Fomapan is a lovely affordable film, and one that's great for experimenting with pushing the ISO (as long as you don't mind grain).

Thanks to Kristian for judging the last project and selecting mine. Great to see the range of subjects here, and vastly different interpretations.

Djb47: professional layout to the product with a great background colour that I imagine was difficult to expose for. Looking at the image full sized also highlights the texture on the yellow material reflecting in the glasses.

Noelcmn: A good curry is a pleasure, and the product to me seems like a camping food supply. The set up gives me the impression it's outdoors? I think the product itself should have received greater presence as I feel I'm looking more at a meal, and less the brand/packet. The lighting looked challenging to work with!

Benz3ne: Nice shot, emphasis is placed on the subject, that dark wood floor compliments nicely. I would have preferred to not see the lighting unit in the background as it distracts the eye. Similarly, the choice of a portrait orientation (I love tall shots as a rule) I feel works against the products importance as there is a lot of unfilled shadow. I saw you had another shot of this on your Flickr which was a closer focus- that would have swung it for me.

As such, I'm picking Don for this projects winner. The focus on the product remains and the choice of stage suits it well. Hope to see the participation strong in the next project as well 🙂

Streets Can I Learn A New Style?

Keeping that interest with varying subjects has been important to me Angky, and often lead to easy self criticism as you adjust your eye to the new compositions (again, my experience).

Looking at your image, the window seems the focus of interest, and it's the play with the trees in the scene leading my eye; I'd have liked this shot more of the dominating foreground stem was out of focus or not there- I've got a mk3 version of the RX100 for work, and whilst it's pretty nifty and super compact, I find it's creatively lacking when I shoot with it- the sensor seems to flatten scene images.

For what it's worth I've appreciated your comments on a couple of my images in the past, learning through discussion points and statements of experience works well for some of us- I say keep at it 😄.

You could try to adapt what technique you have that works in your nature photography to this style to give you grounding- say it was macro you did, you'll probably have an eye for details and a dominant subject- see of you can blow that observation up to a scene (in this case, the window would be my equivalent).
