Interesting to note his site no longer makes any mention of the LX, I wonder if he is servicing them anymore. If not, I don’t know of anywhere that will work on one currently.

Pentax ESII shutter closes when I release the shutter button - is this normal?

I’ve used a dab of liquid super glue in the crack of the housing before and held it together with a small forceps to “set” the break, which fixed it well. Not professional for sure but it works. If you don’t have exposures longer than you keep your finger on the button it’s a horse a piece.

Pentax ESII shutter closes when I release the shutter button - is this normal?

The mechanism which keeps the electronic shutter "on" for the duration of the exposure is linked mechanically to the switch which turns on to meter when you depress the shutter button, this is a common issue that is caused by either a worn collar on the shutter button linkage, or by the plastic switch body cracking. The former is usually an easy fix if you can find the collar, but unfortunately the switch housing cracking is much more common.

Interesting that he’s doing the old non-MLU units again, he told me in sept that they were (at the time it seems) unrepairable.

Fixing up an old ME Super

It happens with a lot less frequency at 125th, but still locks up even with no batteries. Oddly though, it doesn't occur if the lens is wide open. The potentiometer being dirty never even crossed my mind, giving it a good cleaning didn't seem to have much of an effect though. Things feel pretty gummy right now anyway so a good lube might be in order

Fixing up an old ME Super

The quest to return more cameras to working order continues, this time on an old ME super that hasn’t ran a roll of film since the 90s. So upon putting in batteries the shutter speeds all seem to work accurately, film advancing correctly etc... but sometimes the mirror locks when advancing the film. Now I want to clarify, this ONLY happens when there is a lens mounted, and it is easily fixed by removing the lens. Advancing the film through about 1/2 the frame totally raises the mirror, and releasing the shutter lowers it. If the lens is still mounted, cocking the shutter just raises the mirror again. I took the bottom cover off and couldn’t see anything out of the ordinary. It happens across all shutter speeds, and all setting the only thing that makes a difference is mounting a lens. I replaced mirror foam, but haven’t had a chance to dig into the shutter-mirror coupling mechanism yet. Does anyone know what causes this?

Curious Pentax LX Meter Behavior

Old style shutter lock is the little fingernail-lever, similar to on the MX correct? If so that’s what I’ve got too. Is it feasible to switch out the electronics myself, or would it just be easier and more cost effective to look for another LX all together. I’m beginning to suspect there’s not as much charm in owning one of these machines as I had hoped 😁

From that description I do as well, since it goes up to 3200. I contacted Zach, and he said he will not work on an LX. So it’s going off to Eric now. Who knows, maybe if he cant fix it, it'll find use it as a parts camera to save another LX from the scrap heap.

I’ll look into Zach’s, if they’re willing to work on it and can fix the issues that would be great, thanks Huss. I suspect Eric won’t as he’s told me in the past that lx electronic issues are no longer part of his repertoire.
What’s the separation? First two are 52.

Curious Pentax LX Meter Behavior

The manual just describes how the meter should behave, which is shut off after 20-30 seconds. The advance lever should have nothing to do with it as noted by Steve. It appears that the shutter lock does not have an effect on the meter being on/off though.

Curious Pentax LX Meter Behavior

Hi all, I managed to pick up an LX recently for peanuts, as such there was little background with the camera. So far, the only real problem seems to be that the meter turns and stays on when the film is advanced, so a cocked shutter will drain the battery down in a few days. It seems that with an uncocked shutter, the meter will turn on when the shutter button or exposure compensation lock button are depressed and turn off after 30 seconds normally. So just another reason to cock just before shooting. I thought this was the extent of the issue, but it seems that unless the shutter button is depressed, the meter is vastly overexposing the shot. I was shooting in snow today for example and the meter was giving me times of 1/4-1 second at ƒ4 with Tri-x, which is ludicrous.
Is this something that could be potentially fixed without having to replacing the circuit board? Curiously enough the mirror bumpers have been replaced so it must have been serviced recently. Thanks!

Some Difficulty focusing with an MX

Thanks for the advice about switching out the screen with the LX screen, the MX screen was noticeably less sharp when switched out. It is the normal SC-1 screen too. It looks a little dirty under bright light, but otherwise normal. With the normal LX screen in there was no question to focusing. Guess I’ll be on the market for a new one. I don’t think it’s an alignment issue though, since infinity looked sharp when I switched out the screens. Besides that auction site is there anywhere to buy a new screen?

Some Difficulty focusing with an MX

I recently picked up an MX under the impression that it was a parts camera, but it wound up being perfectly functional. (the seller was unaware of how to adjust the ISO selector). The viewfinder is stunning, huge and bright, though I've noticed that nailing critical focus is very hard compared to my LX and Spotmatics-- there isn't a "pop" when things come in focus and the image never really looks sharp to me. Is this normal for the MX? The lens doesn't seem to be the issue as it is sharp with the LX, and I am unaware of an internal diopter for the MX but haven't really done much research on this. Should a replacement focus screen be found? Thanks for any help!

Pentax LX calibration issue?

Something to note if you do decide to send it in for a CLA, this is extremely similar to the symptoms of a cracked circuit board which most technicians and repair shops will not be able to fix or repair, so they might be off put by it. I had an LX recently repaired for this and some shutter issues in the US by Eric, and he was able to return it to working order. Unknown if that was via replacement parts or fixing the existing collar.

6x7 shutter count problem
Posted By Finn Lyle

Good to know. Figured it would be found at some degree in any p67 variety by now, given the combined age and heavy usage most of these cameras have endured. Has it been documented in the 67ii yet? Fingers crossed...:p
A problem that keeps me awake at night indeed. For both my aging 6x7 and LX, lack of reliable parts is going to be the death of these cameras by golly. I suppose, at least for the short term having dubiously functional machines is better than confidently nonfunctional machines. That's my thoughts anyway.

6x7 shutter count problem

This sounds like either the winding pawl or the shutter mechanism engaging clutch are broken. Both these issues are exceedingly common especially in non-MLU 6x7s and early MLU units. If it is non-MLU there's a whole suit of issues unique to the counter roller (the small cylinder directly right of the shutter) and the counting mechanism which unfortunately Eric cannot repair, at least as of august this year. Oh, and does the shutter cock so you can shoot after winding the film 3 times or does it just advance the film indefinitely?

Jonathan Byers from Stranger Things used an MX (at least, that's what the producers said), it was actually a minor plot point in the first season. Though, a flash and no tripod probably wouldn't be ideal for stealth night photography.

I would say its not, in the last month I've sent in to Eric, and received back, a 6x7 and an LX. The issue sounds like its not on Eric's end as he's usually very prompt about picking up items. The postal service seems like its been behind the game in recent months due both to covid and the odd political situation they've been put in.
