Here is what dust in the lens does when it is exposed (necessarily out of focus) for 30 seconds, then stacked together 30 times. A frame that is supposed to be taking care of vignetting is now removing data from inside the corners due to the dust. So, real-world, yes, it matters when you are taking images to their utmost capabilities.

Well, the detent flew out of the bag. It is part number X506. Anyone know where I can buy one? Or send it someone who knows what they are doing? I reassembled it as a manual aperture-only lens for now, but it still needs the dust out of it...

I do appreciate the help. Now: A Pop Quiz. What is the worst sound you can hear when "repairing" a lens? Answer: The sound of the 1mm x 2mm detent when it flies out of the bag and into your incredibly messy office somewhere. After vacuuming for an hour, and shoving a magnet up against the wall to get under the baseboard cracks, I still did not find it. At least it is only for the "A" aperture setting which I never use. I reassembled without it and the aperture works properly.for the manual stops. Does anyone know anyone who still works on these old lenses? I would still like to get it cleaned. And, if possible, get the circled part replaced. Thanks in advance, Dave.

I am an astrophotographer and noticed some dust shadows when taking flat fields the other night before shooting the comet. I took off the bayonet back and lifted the aperture ring. I should not have done that. The detent pin and its TINY spring and two other small, thin pieces of silver metal came out without me seeing where they came from and how they were situated. I am heading to Wyoming to shoot in 48 days. I am looking for help. Does any have a diagram of how these parts fit back together. Does anyone know someone reliable who to whom I could send the lens for cleaning and reassembly that could get it back to me in less than 48 days? Does anyone know of a video somewhere that would tell me what I need to know? At this point, I would live with the dust if I can just get the ring reassembled properly. Thank you all for your help.
