Sigma 70mm F/2.8 DG Macro EX - Is Lens Hood Essential?

Thanks for all the replies. I did some brief testing indoors last night and it appears that I got a good copy that lives up to the positive user reviews on the forum. I will do some outdoor testing, hopefully soon. If I think a hood would help, I found Amazon has a decent looking (and cheap) no-name 62mm screw-on hood that appears to be about the same dimensions as the original, including a 67mm filter thread on the open end, and also includes a 67mm spring cap.

For the bargain I got (about 1/3 of the typical recent ebay prices), I can't complain!

Sigma 70mm F/2.8 DG Macro EX - Is Lens Hood Essential?

I just acquired a Sigma 70mm F/2.8 DG Macro EX for a great price, however it did not include the screw-on lens hood that this lens originally came with. For those who have shot with this lens, how essential do you feel the lens hood is to avoid flare? Or is the screw-on hood just an annoyance that I'm better off without?

I'd test it out myself, but here in New England we might not be seeing a clear, sunny day for a while. (sunglasses for irony)

Amateur - Topaz PhotoAI first thoughts

I hope Topaz Denoise isn't orphaned. I have so far gotten better results with Denoise than with PhotoAI. It seems to me that Denoise provides better user control over the final result. I like how it can put up 4 images using different algorithms so you can do a side-by-side comparison and select the one you like best. I think PhotoAI tried to simplify this to make it more accessible to those less experienced, but in so doing, gave the more experienced less control.

Really? A new hand-winding film camera from Pentax?

Nice article, but you might want to fix this paragraph were you partially repeat the sentences:

What is up with Pentax anyway?

It’s easy to scratch your head at Pentax doubling down on yesterday’s technology. After all, they operate on the margins. They have not indicated that they will be creating mirrorless cameras in the foreseeable future. And they are going to be making film cameras — possibly with manual winding. Are they crazy? doubling down on yesterday’s technology. After all, they operate on the margins. They have not indicated that they will be creating mirrorless cameras in the foreseeable future. And they are going to be making film cameras — possibly with manual winding. Are they crazy?

Optical Adhesive...homemade solar filter...

When I photographed a solar eclipse a few years ago, I made a screw-on filter by using a Cokin P-adapter for their square filter system and taping the filter film to the top of it.

Update: It turns out I haven't ordered it yet. It's still in my B&H Photo Cart for some reason. UncleVanya, I'll send you a PM.

I ordered one new from B&H Photo before I saw either of your posts. I can check if I can cancel the B&H order, UncleVanya, if you can best KEH's price.

Grad ND Simulator ?

I agree. But the original poster was talking about an electronic equivalent of a ND gradient filter as a feature of the camera, which also is not a true ND filter, since it really is a composite of two images. Given that the K3-iii currently does not have this feature, I was providing a means to achieve something similar in post-processing.

I effectively do this in post-processing with ACDSee. ACDSee's RAW Developer has a graduated exposure mask feature. Since the K3-iii is said to have an ISO-invariant sensor*, I use the "Expose for Highlights" AE setting on the K3-iii for the initial exposure to ensure the image has no blown highlights to start with. This typically results in a dark image, but all the highlight detail is captured. Then using ACDSee, I bring up the overall exposure to get the overall brightness I want, and apply the graduated exposure mask to re-darken those areas of the photo that need it. With ACDSee you can have multiple exposure masks for different portions of the photo, all with independent exposure settings.

*The ISO invariant sensor means you can under-expose images and still be able to pull out the shadow detail in post-processing.

I came on here to post the same comment. Except for the color pieces, it looks exactly like a K-70.

P.S. Reading further down, it appears this is an artist's rendering (i.e., they photoshop'd a K-70 with the KF designation and the alternate colors).

I'm very curious what features this new camera has at this price-point. I'm looking forward to the official reveal!

Yay! Lack of the user setting name on the display when using the mode dial was one of my biggest peeves. New FW loaded and tested and it works! Though I notice it only flashes the name up for a few seconds then it disappears. Still better than it was.

Ricoh released FW version 1.50 on 23 June, two days after the 1st day of summer, with the promise of releasing seasonal firmware updates with exclusive Custom Image settings. Should we be expecting a new firmware release tomorrow then?

I'm being cheeky, since I really wish they would just fix some of the basic things. In particular, the User Mode names not being displayed when selected from Mode dial.

The price in the title is $325, but the price in the description is $600. Which is correct? And is that for the entire lot of items shown?
