EXIF was the same on both cameras.

It would have to have a visible bandpass filter. If it didn't green leaves turn white.

You are absolutely right. The Sony should have been backed up to match the APS-C frame. I did use a tripod to make sure the manual focus was accurate. The reason I used ISO 800 is because I shoot that a lot so I wanted that answer. It would be interesting to test the base ISO.

The first 3 are Sony. Check out the difference. Both of these were shot at 1/30 ISO 800 f/5.6 using the same Pentax A 645 150mm lens, and used the AUTO Edit in CR.

The Sony a7r IV is my most used camera. Please ignore the sensor dust. That is a design flaw in my opinion. After several lens switches the exposed sensor will get dirty no matter what. The image used was shot in RAW and was denoised using the excellent new NR in Camera Raw. I did lift the shadows, it just looked too dark. I did the BW conversion in CR with no adjustments.

The K3 Mono had the NR set to Auto. The image was shot JPEG. I used Auto in CR and increase the exposure a little more. There was no further processing to this image.

Observations: The BW conversion with the Sony image seemed to introduce new noise. I used Topaz for NR (not shown) and it did smooth it out but produced unwanted artifacts (not surprising when denoised twice) . The K3 Mono picks up shadows the Sony does not detect and the shadows are smoother. The resolution just seems better across the board.

May reviews of this camera say the main reason to get one is the user experience. Maybe, but if you want quality BW, this is your best . Maybe a Leica is better, but am a mortal and the Lecia is not for mortals. It would be nice if someone could compare them.

My first experiment using the Pentax 1000mm Reflex lens. It is actually very sharp if you use the correct technique. Obviously, this image was processed, but it does show the potential of this overlooked lens. It was shot on a tripod and no tracking was used.

Pentax K1 impressions...

Sony now has a very wide lens selection and eye detection, so if you shoot weddings, shoot Sony. However, at ISO100 for landscape, I prefer Pentax colors. I enter art contests and have sold images I got with the K-1, so yes, semi-pro and professional photographers can find real value in the K-1 even though it is several years behind Sony in some areas. Pentax continues to offer valuable and unique features:

Astro tracer
Superior weather resistance, Sony still doesn't (at least on the ones I own) have rubber gaskets on the body doors
Lower temperature rating
Ability to take exposures over (way over) 30 seconds internally
Pixel Shift is no longer unique, several other companies offer it (I don't know if Pentax has licensed it to them) but it does have 2 PS modes. Sony needs external processing for PS (which I kind of like having access to all the images)
Feels great
I love mirrorless, but I think I will always have a aching need to look through a lens sometimes
Built like a tank
Buttons instead of a complex menu
DNG files

Question for people to who use both classic lenses *and* more modern AF lenses

You must have 645 glass. Get a k-mount adapter. All of mine are manual focus. These lenses were designed for manual focus and they feel just beautiful. With focus peaking and magnification, you can focus accurately on what you want. The lenses are cheap. Several are as good as modern glass, even in CA. No or very little light fall off. All of this because you are only using the center of the large image circle. I use them on my Sony a7r IV and they absolutely keep up with an even more demanding sensor than the K-1.

Of course, don't attempt to shoot a wedding this way, but for landscape, nature, macro and even some portraiture, I really enjoy using the best of 645 prime glass. Get a 300mm. Best long telephoto I have ever owned, even using a 1.4x and 2x.

I have not been able to figure this out. I can stop it down all the way, increase the shutter and still both the histogram and the Highlight Alert in Live View show my highlights are clipping when using a manual focus lens. It happens if there is any white or near white in the frame. My AE Metering is set to Multi-Segment. I am shooting M using a Rokinon 14mm ED.

Pentax mount adapter K M42 adapter problem

Sounds like we have a similar problem with different reasons. Both ways, it comes down to the ability of the locking arm to firmly meet the camera holding plate.

Thanks for taking the time to troubleshoot!

Pentax mount adapter K M42 adapter problem

OK, now we have been able to replicate the problem and I have a theory. I think there are to many threads on my USSR lenses, so they go too far into the adapter. The thin metal locking arm meets the threads for maybe 5mm before the lens is tight in the adapter. This shoves the locking arm slightly up, just enough that it barely touches the camera body mounting teeth (I don't know the correct term), not enough to lock the adapter in place. The extension tubes threads don't protrude into the adapter so far, don't touch the threads, therefore they work and the lens doesn't. The lens just goes too far in.

Do you concur?

This of course, does not give me a solution for the lack of infinity focus using the extension tube on the 500mm.

Pentax mount adapter K M42 adapter problem

The USSR lenses have no pin and unlock the adapter when unscrewed, thus the problem. The extension tubes allow the locking mechanism to hold when being unscrewed and have a spring loaded pin that extends into the camera body when screwed into the adapter. The pin does not touch the adapter. I don't see any function of the pin actually.

I hope I am not missing what your are saying. This is my first try at adapting to a screw in lens.

Thanks for the help!

Pentax mount adapter K M42 adapter problem

I just tried it with a Pentax extension tube. The adapter remains locked when I unscrew it, so it does work with the ring, but not the lens. I also have a MC mto-11ca 10/1000 USSR mirror lens, which also exhibits the same problem as the ZM-5A 3M-5A F8 8/500 SOVIET TELEPHOTO USSR REFLEX LENS; the adapter has a faint click and unlocks when I unscrew it.

I also just tried to use my shortest Pentax extension tube with each lens, which would fix the problem if they could focus properly. The issue now is the ZM-5A 3M-5A F8 8/500 SOVIET TELEPHOTO USSR REFLEX LENS does not focus to infinity. I used a cell phone tower maybe 1-2 miles away and it would not focus, but it was close. The 1000mm lens focuser goes way past infinity and I could focus on the tower with room to spare. So, I have a solution for the 1000mm but not the 500mm. This is an issue for me because I do some astrophotography.

Maybe Pentax made a shorter tube? I have a set of 3. The tubes have no size printed on them. Each one has a spring loaded pin that presses on the camera mount.

Thanks for your insight!

Oh, nice, I am glad that this is not unheard of. I also am using 2 heavy lenses. One is a ZM-5A 3M-5A F8 8/500 SOVIET TELEPHOTO USSR REFLEX LENS, and the other is the 1000mm version. I am stuck with f/8 but the image quality is amazing. My guess is they were KGB spyware.

Thanks for the fast reply!

I just picked up a 'new' Pentax (Pentax brand) mount adapter K m42 adapter. When I insert it into my K-1 body, it clicks and locks. When I go to unscrew the lens, I hear a faint click and it unlocks from the body. It can be used this way but I am concerned the lens could fall out with just a short turn.

Suggestions?

Thanks!
