Went to a motorcycle show this last weekend, thought it would be fun to try some B&W.

They look good to me.:)
Ponies can be tricky beasts to get photos of. They're always on the move, never still for more than a second or two unless they're asleep, so there usually isn't more than a moment to get the shot you want. Thankfully the ponies around here are used to interacting with humans, so as long as you respect their boundaries and understand that they can kill you if they decide to, you can often get close enough to get a decent shot.
One of the most ridiculous things I ever saw out on the moor was a guy trying to photograph a pony using a tripod. The pony would stand there waiting patiently while he positioned his tripod and adjusted the ball head and zoom lens. Then, at exactly the moment he put his eye to the viewfinder to shoot, the pony walked away. I stood watching from a distance as the same thing happened three or four times in a row, and I'm convinced that the pony knew what was going on and was playing with the poor guy. He looked almost in tears of frustration.
Moral of the story: never use a tripod unless you really, really haven't got any other choice.:lol:

@paulh Nice golden hour light!
Since @Dartmoor Dave doesn't provide us with ponies anymore (unless they are in goose disguise :) ), I had to take the job. Well I am a goat specialist and the horses are different (at least they're bigger) so I don't know how I was doing.

I think he has other interests now, 10 years later. But I hardly have any contact with him anymore. Framed by xs4all HD Pentax-FA 31mm Limited F1.8 @ K1-II Frankenstein Castle (1252)
There is much historical evidence to suggest that Mary Shelley's world-famous novel "Frankenstein or Modern Prometheus" actually originated at Frankenstein Castle.

I have never used a mirror lens. That Opteka renders very good colors and definition. Wheatfield FA 2.8/20mm with gradient ND filter on K10D |

Some snaps around Brixham harbour with an Opteka 500mm mirror lens that I picked up cheap in a charity shop.

The combination of motion blur and almost no depth of field makes it a tricky lens to use, and neither of these are quite in focus. In the Pilgrim shot the plane of focus looks to be at about the man in the hi-vis jacket, throwing the three more important foreground figures slightly out of focus. In the Pilot shot the plane of focus is on the water just in front of the boat, so there's some more practice needed on my part before the airshow season starts in June. I think it'll be a fun airshow lens, since it's so light that shooting with it all day won't be exhausting. And the planes will be at infinity anyway so focus error won't be as much of an issue.:)

@paulh Wow! What an engine! Nice work.
Looking at the full resolution image on a large screen, it's quite hard to believe that this Kodak DX 7630 is a 20 years old P&S. So fine and well balanced.
Size reduced SOOC JPEG attached.
