I really like the processing on this photo, it's subtle but captures a vintage look really well.

The 31mm LTD is a really extraordinary lens in conjunction with the K-3 III Mono (last shot). Interesting comparison!

So far, yes. The two different shapes/patterns always show up together as long as they're strong enough to make out, and they're only in JPEGs as far as I have been able to find. ---------- Post added 02-17-24 at 11:13 PM ---------- I believe this link should have a dark-frame image, the DNG and JPEG both straight out of camera, for your scrutiny. OneDrive
The image ending in 552 is a second JPEG made in-camera from the 551 DNG, with boosting of shadows and raising exposure, then JPEG 552 was further bumped in Lightroom to bring out the full and complete picture of the weird patterns. I can't replicate that with the DNG in Lightroom no matter how hard I try.

I think the variance at different magnification levels comes down to how much info is being removed from the LCD readout. It might be similar to how on my GRIIIx, images with lots of grain may look rough for a moment but will "render" further to a smooth look, until zooming in to look for grain. Grain or noise is hard for digital screens to reproduce.

I am sure I can do that, but it might not be until Saturday morning when I have some time with my desktop at home.

I did some dark frame shots with the lens cap on, one at 51200 and a few at lower ISO, though I'm picking 3200 as my example. It really does appear to be the AF grid (which I did not realize is still on-sensor with DSLRs, but that's just coming from AF film SLR concepts), and it only shows up where there is enough noise for the different pixel density and the location of the AF grid to show. Here's the 51200 image: Attachment 626934
and here's the 3200 image. These were raised considerably using Android's image editing tools from the JPEGs (we already established that it shows up equally on RAW and JPEG). There's not enough noise in the 3200 image for the pattern to show up (to my eye, on a small screen). Attachment 626935 |

I'd like to see any mirrorless camera have as nice, big, bright and clear of a viewfinder that sees the real world as the K-3 III Monochrome that I am currently testing out. You couldn't have this camera in mirrorless because you wouldn't be able to see half the image, since monochrome sensors need to be exposed down to prevent highlights being lost. An EVF would be a bunch of black and dark gray.

Interested to hear how the 35mm f2.4 performs with the Monochrome, when I had it I felt like it was a really contrasty lens, so that might work out pretty well.

Is this the case? I didn't know that, and could be a very good reason why a monochrome GR is not in the works.

Just ordered the book on Thriftbooks! I've bumped up against Gestalt principles a lot without really understanding much.

The GRIII can get hot under use - the problem with turning it into a waterproof camera is heat management. Big sensors require big power draw, which makes heat.

This looks really cool, I like the highlight bloom with that old lens. Looks good in monochrome.

Great detail shot! Have you tried using the "insert image" button in the post editor?
Edit: I tried it with your image url and it doesn't show up. Might be a question for the mods or site administrator?

Have you played Wingspan? It's a little less directly competitive, but works with 2 players as well as more than 2. And it's one of the most satisfying games mechanically that I've played in a long time. Can't recommend it enough.

I knew it was going to be a great game with staying power when I wanted to start again the instant a game was complete. I still feel that way.

@greyscale I'm really liking your monochrome examples so far, especially coming from the DFA 21mm. It renders in a certain way on the K3 III Mono that really works with your subject matter and composition.

I'd be okay with a stripped-down FF model without an articulating screen (I know I'm in the minority) but the size and cost penalty of a screen that moves is very low with all of the refinement that this feature has had throughout the digital camera world. But then, who'd have thought the K3 III would have a fixed screen?
No IBIS is a no-go, though, and have fun convincing Pentax to do that. They've had IBIS forever, and never opted to put any in-lens stabilization features in their optics. So the chances of that happening are nil.
