For Sale: Polaroid Cameras, New Now+ and Vintage OneStep

I have some Polaroid cameras which I have used a little and put away for quite some time. They need to get into the hands of someone who wants to experiment with instant photography.

The OneStep works with 600 type Polaroid film (manufactured new by the newly reborn Polaroid company). It's older but clean and functional.

The Now+ uses I-type film (newer and slightly better, the film pack doesn't have a built-in battery like the older versions like 600). It comes with a filter kit for color effects or a starburst effect, and it works with manual settings via an app, or auto settings like most Polaroids without the app. It has a rechargeable battery and comes with cable, instructions and strap in original box. Like-new condition.

I'm selling as a bundle, for $60 plus shipping via USPS or another method if you prefer.

No film included, I don't have any left.

I have some unused 49mm filters which are sold as a bundle. Included:

• Nano-series 49mm UV filter in box & case.

• Nano-K series 49mm filter kit, including UV filter, CPL and lens cap, in case and box w/cleaning cloths and stick-on cap leash.

• Nano-X series 49mm magnetic adapter ring & ND filters, including adapter, ND8, Grad ND8, ND64 and ND100 in belt pouch.

All are new or open-box condition, and glass is all clean and unmarked. I stocked up at one point but have just never had the need for them.

Will ship USPS or other method if you prefer. Price is $35 plus shipping cost.

Here's my take: mirrorless cameras are almost all hybrid video/stills. They're made to be hybrid cameras, and it's what the manufacturers all think that the public wants (probably this is supported by sales figures, otherwise why would they keep it up?). I do think that modern mirrorless cameras have reached close to the peak of refinement, however that's refinement of a hybrid product, so it's inherently full of compromise.

I'm a stills shooter, and I see most cameras coming out now as compromised in some areas which I'd like them to be stronger in. So there's room for improvement in the design of stills-focused cameras. That's one reason I'm drawn to my Pentax K-1 II. The big beautiful viewfinder and other features are squarely designed for stills shooters, and all of the compromises were applied to the video side.

That Elusive "3D Pop" Defined

Makes sense about how modern lenses strive for a flat plane of focus. One of the by-products of all that correction I think is abrupt focus falloff, which is a hallmark of modern lenses and something I've grown to find more and more ugly, as I come to appreciate rendering more. I think gentle focus falloff contributes a lot to 3D pop, just like gentle highlight falloff is a marker of better sensors or film. Smoothness of transition is important in photography in multiple ways.

Inventory time! Let's see, currently:

* Pentax HD FA 31mm f1.8 Limited
* Pentax-M 50mm f1.7
* Pentax-A 50mm f1.7
* Pentax FA 50mm f1.4
* Pentax-A 35-105mm f3.5
* Pentax-F 35-70mm f3.5-4.5 Macro
* Pentax DA 50-200mm f4-5.6 ED (I don't use this one, as the results are so poor, it just hasn't left the fold)
* TTartisans 23mm f1.4 Micro Four Thirds
* Olympus M.Zuiko 12-45mm f4
* Lomo 32mm f2.8 Minitar (on my LC-A)
* Ricoh 26.1mm f2.8 (my GRIIIx)

The last two were sort of cheating. But there's my current list!

I really like these. The combination of sensor, lens and of course your skill at using the camera really come together. Haven't seen many B&W wildlife photos lately, but they are great!

I don't necessarily find the K-1 or K-3 III too large in use (though sometimes the K-1 feels too large when carrying it around, not actively shooting with it - the difference that an excellent grip makes). But it's large enough to garner more attention. You are correct, though, that a small Limited prime really makes a difference.

I think you took the right strategy. You might have had to make a sacrifice now, but over time, what you find you are really missing, you can repurchase.

Thank you for these photos! They are great and I think they speak really well for the camera. I also had the opportunity to use one for a few weeks and I found it to be quite a good street shooter. It's just a little large and draws a bit of attention but not too much. Focus is very fast and accurate (I mainly used the FA 31mm Limited). And best of all the sensor produces extremely sharp and detailed files with a lot of room in the darker tones to produce good contrast and depth. The sensor is probably a 10 out of 10 for street photography. The K-3 III body in general is about a 7 out of 10 (for me).

I would have liked to keep it, but it's very expensive considering I have a K-1 II and a GRIIIx. And I can't part with either of those.

Curious, how do you feel about the sharpness with these two f1.7 versions compared to the 1.4? I have the latter and I sometimes leave wanting the sharpness of my A and M series f1.7 models.

Nicely done! What viewfinder screen does your MX have? I have come across a couple of them, and prefer the non-split-image one with center matte.

The 31mm LTD is a really extraordinary lens in conjunction with the K-3 III Mono (last shot). Interesting comparison!

I think the biggest irony here is that when you go into the menu (sure enough, lens corrections is a category, which I totally missed), the icon for distortion correction looks kind of like the artifacts we've been poring over for the past week... I really think you've solved it.

It's really hard to see much difference! The hill in the background looks different, but more like a lighting change between the shots?

Very interesting! I can see how the rings around the outer edge of the frame would be lens correction, correcting vignetting, I am not sure how/why the grid pattern shows up though. It seems like an odd thing for a lens correction to generate, but maybe it is a moire thing or has to do with resizing.

---------- Post added 02-21-24 at 03:08 PM ----------

Also, I don't see anywhere in the K-3 III Monochrome's menu settings where lens corrections could be selected. I might need to study the manual.

I don't think any RAW demosaicing (except that in the camera) results in the artifacts. I'm tempted to think the TIFF conversions still rely on an embedded JPEG for viewing.

Pentax DA 35mm 2.4 vs FA 35mm 2

I never owned both at the same time, but I had the DA lens with a KP, and the FA version with the K-1. I thought the DA punched well above its weight, but felt the FA was a little less than tack-sharp on full frame until stopped down quite a ways. It had character close to wide open, but there was a middle ground aperture-wise where it just didn't do anything special. Not apples to apples, I realize, but I'd say you can't really go wrong with the DA.

Is FastRawViewer still showing you the embedded JPEG even with the TIFF? I don't know how these things work.

I wonder if some RAW processors use the embedded JPEG as a benchmark in such a way that the software recreates the problem in editing the RAW? Since it's clear from looking at DNGs in Windows using the default photo viewer that the pattern is there, though it disappears when I view it in Lightroom.
