I discovered your video this morning and my K1ii was delivered by UPS this afternoon so I have barely gotten into the video yet but I am already smarter for what I watched. Thanks for making it.

Any chance you have one for the KP???

I strongly disagree with those numbers especially as the KP’s sync speed isn’t that high.
Try flash on manual, 1/4 power
ISO 100
Shutter 1/125
F-stop f/5.6

Adorama has a sale and I am hopeful that would ensure a lens built after the rumored “fix” of the autofocus issue.

KEH just sold out. Do you find Map Camera a reputable source?

---------- Post added 03-18-21 at 08:08 AM ----------

I think I am sold on the 50-135mm. Much thanks to those who suggested it.
Now the question is new or used?

I have seen you referred to in previous posts regarding this lens so it is nice to know that there is a resource if I choose to go with this lens.

Everything I am reading tells me that this is a primo lens to have for portrait work and that is exactly what I am looking for.

Do you know if the failure rate has improved with newer versions?

My apologies for mis-naming a lens. The last lens I was considering was the Pentax D FA* 70-200mm F2.8ED DC AW.

For 12 yrs the only lens I had was my 18-250. Only in the last 2 yrs have I rewarded myself first with the 50, then received the 35 as a present and in a desire to up my portrait game, I bought the 70.

Like many of you, I don’t have access to a local camera store that stocks anything Pentax compatible so I am stuck with online reviews. The problem is that all 4 of these lenses read well in reviews but rarely do reviews mention how they stack up to each other beyond some positive comparisons between the 50 and the 55.

If, in the experience of those of you who have shot these lenses, my selection of lenses is great for portrait work, then that is great news. I will spend the money elsewhere.

If one of these lenses is really a standout I would be very interested in knowing which one.

Lastly, for those of you with more experience shooting other lenses, such as the 50-135 that was suggested I would be very interested. That lens wasn’t even on my radar but now I am interested.

Shooting a new KP. I have the plastic-fantastic 35 and nifty fifty, the 70mm f/2.4 and my all around 18-250mm.
I shoot portraits when I have the time and would like a new lens. My choices are:
FA* 50mm f/1.4
DA* 55mm f/1.4
FA* 85mm f/1.4
FA* 70-200mm f/2.8
I have read lots of reviews and still tossed up. I have a shallow studio so I doubt I would be able to use the 85 unless I shot on location and would only be able to use the 70-200 wide in studio. For these reasons I think my battle is between the 50 and the 55. Will I really see that much improvement over the nifty fifty with these lenses?

Thank you so much for your detailed information. I have bigger hands so I think I will prefer the largest grip, at least so far. As far as settings go, I like your suggestions but that will take some getting used to and some practice to remember what is where and when to switch. I am a very grab and go shooter so I am always looking for the best all around set-up as my default. I am determined to give back button focus another try but in all honesty I don’t see the big deal. The tilt screen is a big deal. This is my first camera with that option. Thankfully it takes the same battery as my K-50 so I now have 4 batteries. I process with Photoshop Elements 20 so I am not too concerned about the larger files, actually looking forward to them. I have the 70mm limited lens and I am looking forward to that combo for my next portrait session.
Thankfully my flash game is pretty solid and I use non-proprietary triggers so I am ready to go with that.
I really expect to be very happy with this camera. Thanks again.

I have the solenoid to fix it but it was a good excuse to upgrade and I didn’t want to open it up until I had a replacement.

After electing not to repair the solenoid in my K-50 I saved up and took advantage of Adorama’s deal and bought the KP, the battery grip and the free flash. As you can see by the picture I have been a faithful Pentax shooter for many years and am look forward to many more. I greatly appreciate the suggestions and insight gained from the Forum.

Hoping for another (bigger) stimulus check. If it happens and this lens is still available you can anticipate me reaching out.
If someone else gets it first I hope they get the most out of it.

No capacitor whine, no zoom motor, no lights of any kind. The bulb should not make a difference as it is not part of the circuit until it discharges.
Basically it is no different with batteries than it is without.
Used flashes are readily available on ebay and I could get 3-4 for the price of a new one. Just curious if this was unusual or to be expected like the solenoid issue.

My trusty flash has stopped working. Regardless of batteries it does not turn on or react in anyway. I have cleaned the contacts but that did not help. I am familiar with the battery door issue but adjusting that makes no difference. Any thoughts?

As far as AF lenses go, I have the 18-250, 35, 50, and just got the 70.
I don’t shoot every day but when doing a shoot of my daughter for instance I might take 5 pictures or I might take 50.

I was not happy about a $200 repair to a shop in Connecticut and that is why I reached out here.

The KP is attractive and I am a big fan of the extra battery/grip. I put one on my ME Super back in the day and loved it. That said, I am very acclimated to the controls and the layout of the K-50 and am not sure that I would feel as comfortable shooting the KP as I would the K-70.

Yes I am in the US and have ordered much and many from B&H, big fan.

Thank you all for your suggestions.
I think I will go the self repair route. I can always buy a new camera if it doesn’t work. Not much to lose when you are working on broken gear.
As attractive as it sounds to keep this one as a “manual” camera as someone who started with a K1000 almost 30 yrs ago I am over having to think about every part of the process.
If I do upgrade to the K-70 I might just go ahead and order a solenoid for at at the same time.

I shoot a lot, portraits and travel. I am only interested in a new camera. I am a hobby shooter. I have no interest in full frame given the investment in lenses I already have.
I can afford the repair. If I eat at home a bit more I can afford the K-70 and a review from 2018 sure makes it sound like a great camera.
I could probably swing the KP but would need a good reason why.

I have a K-50 that just developed the aperture problem. If I don’t repair it myself the cost is at least $202. The K-70 retails for $546. Repair or upgrade?
