Have you ordered from the K&F website K&F Concept Canada: Professional Phorography Accessories Online Shopping Ten days ago I ordered an ND filter for the solar eclipse (on April 8th), and the order status is still "processing". If it takes over 10 days to "process" an order, I am not sure it will make it to North America in a month. What has your experience been ordering from them?

That's interesting. I am thinking of adding DA*300 because I am unhappy with my 55-300 at 300mm (and that's where it gets most use). How would you compare these two lenses? Do you use DA*300 a lot less because it only offers one focal length, or is there something else?

I format the card every time, since it is quicker than deleting the images. ---------- Post added 12-18-23 at 08:44 AM ----------
That's a great idea. I put the card back into the camera, and got the message "Card is not formatted"! Putting it back into the computer gave me the message "Card error" that "could not be fixed", even though I can open the folders and still see the files. ---------- Post added 12-18-23 at 08:46 AM ----------
Yeah, it looks like this is a card issue. That's odd, since it is supposed to be a reliable card - SanDisk Extreme Plus 64.

I was doing continuous shooting while the battery indicator was low. The camera was firing, showing preview, and was (at least pretending) writing the files. When I tried to import those files into a PC, 110 DNG files were unreadable. Any attempt to read them (in Windows Explorer, Lightroom, Faststone, or back-up software) invariably hangs the process, and requires safe removal of the SD card to be able to read the other (good files). The corrupt files have apparently normal sizes, and some (but not all) have at least some EXIF data. How is it possible that the mechanics of the camera were functional for so much longer than the electronics? Once I changed the battery, files started to to be written as normal.

I have a 55-300 PLM, and not happy with it at 300mm. So, my goal is to have a sharper image at 300. Comparing an upsampled DA*300 image to the Sigma at 500mm is not fair to the Pentax. I view the Sigma more as a 300mm lens, and 500 (an 50) is just a bonus not worth taking into consideration.

I am on the look out for the DA*300, but now consider the Sigma. Does IQ on Sigma at 300mm comparable to that of Pentax? How does the AF compare for these two?

Step-up rings for a polarizer. It is useless since a larger-than-thread polarizer prevents one from using the hood, hence decreasing the contrast... exactly what a polarizer supposed to help with. The polarizer itself is not useless since it can be used on lenses with the proper thread.

I see a lot of these cameras, so I guess it was a staple of its time. Do they have any collector's value?

As I understand it, much of the dirt on the sensor is statically charged dust. Did anyone try to electrically ground the camera before cleaning the sensor? I think this might help. There are two immediate options: to ground the chassis, or the negative terminal in the battery compartment.

The idea is to use 77mm filters on lenses with diameters from 49 to 77 mm. That's focal range from 10mm to 300mm. It is hard to use the same hood on all of them :). ---------- Post added 02-06-23 at 04:36 PM ----------
Why not? You never had a situation with the sun (or its reflection) right at the edge of the frame?

I am thinking of getting rid of all my filters except for the largest diameter ones, and use them on all the lenses with step-up rings. However, I typically use filters (CPL and ND) in bright light. This is exactly when one also wants to use a hood. However, using a larger filter with a step-up ring will prevent one from using the hood. How do you get around this?

I purchased this DA 35 Macro used. The description did not mention any defects. Upon closer inspection I discovered scratches on one of the inside lenses, probably due to improper handling and cleaning of the lenses during disassembly. They are pretty difficult to photograph. What you can see is not on the front or rear lenses. They are on one of the lenses in the middle of the objective. I cannot see any obvious issues with the images the lens produces.
How much would these scratches affect the overall contrast/IQ?
Would you contact the seller and try to return/re-negotiate the price in such a situation?

Could you (or others) please expand on the Sigma 10-20 vs. DA14/15 IQ? I was looking at these lenses to replace my Sigma 10-20 specifically because I am not really fond of Sigma's IQ.

Why did Pentax manufacture these two lenses of almost identical focal length at the same time? I get that their weights differ two-fold, but is that enough to launch a second lens? They also have different max apertures (2.8 vs. 4), but interestingly their prices are very comparable. Their optical formulas seem very different - that might be the reason. Those who used both, could you please comment the differences? When/why would you use one over the other?

No, I only use Focus-priority.
I tried using that, but the result is even worse.

A very popular AF test in reviews is to test continuous AF on a subject that's approaching the camera (e.g. a car/child/dog). In pretty much every review I have seen (not necessarily of Pentax cameras) the camera would produce a decent percentage of sharp images. The reviewer would usually be upset that some images are out of focus. Well, whenever I attempt to replicate this with children approaching me, and camera in AF-C mode, and central AF sensor on the subject, I always reliably get exactly 0% of usable images. I never had a single usable image of anything approaching me produced with a KP. I do not see how my technique (whatever it might be) might contribute to this. This seems to be a 100% autofocus function. What has your experience been? Any suggestion what I might be doing wrong?

Can anyone recommend a photo printing service in Canada, specifically Ontario. Many websites make it difficult to do even most basic comparison by requiring you to register before you can see what they offer. I am looking for a decent consumer (not business or bulk) photo printing service that would be a step above Costco: printing on quality paper with quality ink.

1.Ultra-wide angle with minimal geometric aberrations
2.Depth of field from 1cm to infinity
3.Being closer to God*
* - #3 requires making the hole yourself, and using a shoebox and photographic paper in place of a camera.

With respect to brands, I tried using TerraMaster F2-210, and it bricked after an update a year ago. TerraMaster says "take it back to the vendor" (amazon), but Amazon just does not respond. Do not use TerraMaster.

UPDATE:
B&H replaced the tripod head, but I was slapped with another round of "Duties & Taxes" by a brokerage agent, even though I paid them to B&H. B&H response was basically "not our problem". Beware of cross-border exchanges.

I just purchased a new tripod and head from B&H (FieldOptics Research MicroLite FT-5021A Aluminum Tripod and FieldOptics FPH-200 Pan Head). When the head is mounted on the tripod, the head plate is not parallel to the tripod plate: Attachment 552313
The difference is 1.2 degrees.
The problem seems to be the head, and not the tripod. I measured the angle between the tripod's plate and screw (after straightening by the plate), and it seems exactly 90 degrees. Attachment 552316
Is this something I can fix or I would need to send it back to B&H? I can see three screws on the head's plate. Could they be use to alight the head's plate, or they just hold the plate together? Attachment 552318
Also, what is the purpose of this small screw on the tripod plate? Attachment 552319 |
