Sent my K5 to Pentax here is how it is going.

Guys: I do believe they're not making them fast enough to replace the flawed units they're receiving as returns, hence the price point remains artificially high at this time. Sad, but you reap what you so, Pentax. Such is life. Que sera, que sera.

Right on! I'm guessing Pentax is working around the clock to get the K5 flaws and image back to where is should belong. Good stuff. Glad to hear you got a good working one.

Bramela: Where there's smoke, there's usually fire as my Daddy was prone to say. What's boring, IMHO, is the continued fanboy defense of a flawed initial product release by a rather large player in the DSLR game. No one's questioning that some working devices are out there, and perhaps the majority. The issue is that there's way too many flawed devices and at a price point of $1,500, that is unacceptable to me and many others who continue to sit on the fence until both device issues and price are addressed. If that's boring to you, so be it. Most of us sitting on the fence with respect to pulling the buy trigger see it otherwise.

Phil: Wise words, and as you say, it will take time. As a couple have mentioned here, the proof is in the pudding. I believe many of us are sitting on the fence and waiting for the storm to pass and all issues resolved. I've got $1,400 in my Paypal account and could pull the trigger on the K5 at any moment, but not just now...maybe in a month or so and with the next production batch. Cheers. Don

Jeff: Wise of you. I'll probably be picking up the K5 by June, if not earlier; once I get the feel that all is being addressed and the price point is realistic (i.e., around $1,300). As Rupert said in an earlier post, for $1,599, we expect to having a working device. Cheers. Don

I'd go with the D7000 if it were me at this moment; however, the day they come out with a good working copy of the K5 in citron yellow, I'm pulling the trigger. Won't that be a cool camera to lug around.

Yep, I'm asking too much for a camera to AF correctly and come without globs of glue on the sensor. But what the hell, what's $1,500 amongst Pentax and its loyal customers.

K-5, "item under review" on Amazon

Yes, but you have gone thru 3 bodies, Al, and like me you are sitting on the fence, waiting for Pentax to get their act together before ordering another one. I have a feeling that you'd feel a lot more comfortable with a serial number beginning with the number "4". Just an assumption, mind you...little hard evidence at this end. Ouch....

Ahhh...the saga of the K-5 batch of lemons continue. I say batch because I'm sure later production runs will clean up any problems. I suspect the reason it's under review is that B&H and other sellers are simply turning around the new batches to replace lemons returning and really have no inventory for sale. My advice: Better to wait until the serial numbers start with "4" and let the fellas who have already purchased continue to replace theirs with the big boy sellers. The saga continues. Sad.

Why was the Poll on K-5 Problems closed???

I believe that this Poll should be reinstated and those who own a K-5 should present their experiences. Such information could/should prove invaluable to those who are contemplating the purchase of the K-5.

If the moderators to this Forum wish to close any discussion around this poll, then I don't have any problem with such a move. There's enough vitriolic views without fanboys and whiners getting into a snit peripheral to the actual Poll. I believe the following is the link to the original Poll of which I speak. Cheers. Don

I began this thread, and one other, and will probably start another, because I have heard of a K5 camera body that continues to fail to deliver for far too many of its purchasers and at a far too high of an initial price point. I feel this Forum and a few others are a way and means of informing/educating those who wish information/truth on the K5 and, perhaps, I naively believe that such information will have Hoya improve its quality control operations both now and going forward. Frankly, I couldn't care less what fanboys everywhere believe. Cheers. Don

I thought I had made it clear: The problem has/is Quality Control with Hoya/Pentax with respect to the K-5. This is the only point I'm trying to make. Hoya wants our $1,500 for an overpriced body and gives us a faulty unit in exchange. This is not fair bartering, IMHO.

A friend of mine, a photographer whom I respect, recently posted this on the Flickr Pentaxian Forum. T'is a sad day indeed when Big Brother admits they have a problem and haven't the foggiest idea how to proceed. Here's my friend's latest post on his K-5 saga:

"So the B&H tech spoke to Pentax and it seems that they are beginning to admit that there may be a problem with the camera. They have been getting calls over the last 4 weeks. The also stated that the Pentax rep said that there may be a FW fix in the works, but that nothing is official.

The B&H tech guy's final advice to me was to return the camera for a refund and continue to monitor the situation. Once it's clear that Pentax has fixed the issue (and he was sure that they would) buy the K-5 again.

He said that the other option was to hold on to the camera and wait for the FW fix, but that he didn't really advise that since there is always a possibility that the fix doesn't come quickly or at all and I'm stuck with a dud camera. He felt that if I already had three with the problem that there wasn't great chance that #4 would be any different.

It's with a heavy heart that I think I'll be taking his advice and returning the K-5 for a refund. I'm pretty sure that once the issue is addressed I will buy again."

Uhhh....ohhhhh....K20D focuses better than the K-5. You can't be saying that on this Forum. The fanboys will get ya. Personally, I'm getting tired of reading all the various problems with the K-5. I'm just gonna order me one and then keep sending it back to B&H like my good friend Al until I get a good working copy.

You may want to pick up the K-5 as it appears to be the cat's meow in so many directions. However, given the sensor stain issue and other QC issues, you may want to wait until the serial number begins with "4" on this unit; also, the price point at $1,500 is absurdly high when compared to its Nikon/Canon competitors with similar features. Wait a few months until the price drops to about $1,100 - $1,200 and QC has been addressed and then get yourself this camera if you're so inclined. Cheers. Don

I wouldn't think so. I agree that 10 to 12 mp with some HD video capabilities for beginners would be the norm for future models.

Thoughts on if/when the K5 price may drop?...

Well, if you read about the poor take up on this camera in Japan, and couple that with the terrible QC issues that keep rearing their head, then I would expect that we'll see a price drop sooner than later. Just look at the recent poll on K-5 problems that was closed for some apparent reason pn this Forum in the last few hours: Only 41% of people who own the K-5 and took the poll have been completely happy with the unit, whereas the remaining 59% have one or more problems, most resulting in return of the body for exchange and/or repair. It's a shame the poll was closed. Probably due to either trepidation by the site owner that Pentax/Hoya would be seriously unhappy with the poll and pull sponsorship dollars, and, or the fanboys complained about the unfairness of the poll. That being said, the poll was skewed for those experiencing a problem with their K-5. Regardless, it was additional information for those with an interest in Pentax. Cheers. Don

I couldn't agree with you more. The recent poll on the K-5 on this Forum just blew me away, as it probably did others. Imagine only 41% being completely happy with the K-5 when purchased, with the remainder sending the body back for repairs and/or exchange. Little wonder why the wily Japanese are not buying this overpriced body. I would like to pull the trigger and buy the K-5, but in good conscience, and in trepidation, I just can't at this time. Cheers. Don

Rupert: Your bud here. Let's go easy on the fanboys, and the whiners. I'm not responding to personal disses. There's no point. I'd like to see this poll thread continue for those interested in the K-5 to muse about. I'd hate to see this thread locked or pulled over a few throwing personal slights. I think a poll that shows 41% of those responding satisfied with their cameras and a similar amount sending theirs back for repair says alot about both the camera and the company. I'll not pass any judgements. I'd like to get a good working copy of the K-5; just not right now. Too many QC issues out there. Your bud. Don

Hi, ya'll. Let's start with your finish: Larry Drew leaving the Heels is a damn Godsend. We couldn't be happier with this deadbeat with the execution skills of Dumbo going his merry way. As to your first point: Life is like a good play; you got to tell the audience again and again if you want your message understood by all. Also, you may want to read the entire thread. Of course the poll is a flawed instrument. In fact, it couldn't be more slanted in one direction. That being said, any company that has 50% plus of its product coming back to them is hardly concerned with building long-lasting and trusting relationships with its clientele. Thanks for your input. Ooops, number now happy with their K-5 for the $1,500 they exchanged for it is now at a little better than 41%. Now, that's performance. Let me close my eyes. What do I see in my future? Ahhh, it's a D7000; not, it's a D7.

And, no, I am far from a troll. Read my history on this site. I own some of the very best Pentax glass out there, as well as a couple of the best pieces Sigma makes for this brand (i.e., Sigma EX DG 180mm Macro and Sigma EX DG 100-300mm, F4). So, please don't call me a malcontent and shite disturber. So, why do I continue to post on this thread? It just irks the hell out of me that a large corporate electronics manufacturer can demand an unreasonable price for this camera body when the quality of the unit appears to be utter crap for far too many buyers. It irks me even more that I really, really want to buy this unit and soon, but am so pissed with the brand that I just might move on. There have to be others out there of the same persuasion. Have a great day, ya'll. Go, Heels, Go.
