:- P - for when you acknowledge the camera knows better than you (most of the time!) This isn't quite right.
P (Hyperprogram) chooses what the camera determines to be the best setting but if you adjust the aperture (on the back dial) , switches to AV mode, and if you adjust the shutter speed on the front dial, switches to Tv mode. Pressing the green button on back returns to the cameras preferred setting. So you don't need to switch modes prior to taking the shot, just adjust to the aperture and or the shutter speed you want as you take your photo and let the camera work out the other option.
If you set the ISO to auto, it will up the iso if you run out of other options. You can set the max iso to use in the menu. I don't have a K5 but I assume you have the option to set the ISO yourself or use auto iso. The green button may switch this to auto iso.
I tend to use this mode now on my KP and K1 whenever I am using auto exposure. With ISO set on the top dial (not an option on the K5), you have full control of all exposure variables.

Only done that once. Trouble with having a spare card is you may still not notice there is no card in the camera. At least the warning now shows a red card on the display, and no card in the camera message when shots are taken or trying to play. Problem is, if you have the display off to save battery you will still be blissfully unaware of the no card situation.
What I tend to do when going out with the camera is to do a quick test shot to make sure I haven't left it on some silly setting like 12s delay, and proves the card is ok etc. K1 is better with 2 slots.
Incidentally, I tend to leave photos on my card until it is about 2/3rds full. This gives an additional layer of backup, and avoids overwriting the same locations each time. In theory you will usually be writing to fresh parts of the memory so the card may last a bit longer. Ok they last a good long time anyway, but they do eventually wear out.

Looks like you had a great time. We could have used Vlad the Impaler on our side when we went, as Pompeii was packed with people.

Isn't doing things yourself part of the fun though. If you want the camera to take care of every part of producing the perfect image, you could argue that you should ditch the camera and buy your perfect image from a shop. It does make me wonder why some people buy cameras packed with features that they never use (I know cause I am one of them). I would be happy if the software would offer a cut down menu system with just the options you wanted to use (a bit like a Linux OS) so I could more easily find the options I wanted.

Just heard the unmistakable sound of a spitfire. Grabbed the KP and FA HD 150-450 iso 1600, shutter also 1600, aperture f11 at 450mm handheld. Best one I got. Fairly heavy crop of the raw file, bit of contrast and clarity. Quite pleased with that one.

A 50mm lens was considered a "standard lens" on a 35mm camera. Standard, being approximately the view as you would see it with your eyes. As the K10D (which is a great camera - checkout the K10D club posts) has a smaller sensor, a 50mm lens is more like a small telephoto. This is particularly useful for portraits and sounds ok for 75 Euro, but at the risk of being shot down in flames, would suggest a better bet to start out with would be a SMC Pentax-DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL WR which are widely available for about £50 (uk used shop price). This would allow you to get wider views up to small telephoto length at a reasonable price and water resistant to boot. This lens was often bundled with the K10D (I have still got mine) and is a pretty useful lens. Beware though, once you have been bitten by the Pentax bug, You will want to try out some of the more exotic cameras and lenses. Lock up that credit card!

I started using Affinity Photo about 3 years ago. Previously used GIMP as I also hated having to pay subscriptions to Adobe or anyone else. Although GIMP was very good it can't be particularly described as easy. Decided to do a trial of Affinity and when it was on a 1/2 price offer, it was easily the best value software out there. I am noticeably tight when in comes to paying for software but I even surprised myself and splashed out on a copy for the iPad and their excellent workbook (again all at 1/2 price).
There is no shortage of tutorials on the internet specifically for Affinity, and in any case, most photoshop tutorials that I have tried are very easily adapted to Affinity.
I have also included several Photoshop plugin effects and brushes which just work straight away.
With a 30 day free trial (without having to pre-purchase) it is really worth trying it out.

That is a great choice. I bought a new KP when my K10d died on me and it's just brilliant.
One tip, if you change the clarity setting from the default value, it will do processing and writing to the card before allowing the next shot. Haven't found any other settings that cause this (yet).
