I've bought a 50mm f1.7 A series lens to take nice portraits of the kids, after reading a few threads like this one, and I've been amazed at the difference in the photos that I've got to the kit lens.
Here is one example, with a 100% crop to show what I mean. User Photo Gallery - People User Photo Gallery - People
I'm amazed at the colour, contrast and ease of use of this lens on the K10. It's really changed my views on what lenses I'll try to get hold of. I've ordered a split prism focus screen to help with the manual focus, and have just bought an M series 135mm lens to try out as well.
Best Wishes to all in the 'A club',
Nick. :)

Thank you SOldBear, I was a bit too hasty there in thinking the flash was working as a TTL unit.
I tested it again tonight and (although I have not got the manual) I think I had it on auto, as you suggest. It seems it will compensate for the camera to subject distance changing, but the aperture must be set correctly, and if you change it, the picture is then under or over exposed. I also have a Pentax AF200SA, for which I do have the manual, and this only works in fully automatic mode. This does the same thing, so I'm sure you were right, I must have had the Cobra unit on auto, not TTL.
I'm quite happy with the results with both flashes, and I was really motivated to post my first message to share with other newbies my finding that the external Cobra unit worked well with the fully manual lens, whereas the internal unit would not really work easily.
I like your DIY method too though - I guess you have some film bodies as well as digital? I've just got one too, a Pentax Program A which was in the same lot as the lenses and the Cobra flash, and I shot a roll of black and white film just to test it, and had a go at using the darkroom at work to develop it today. People moan about how long it takes, but I'm sure I spend as long on each digital picture in Photoshop as I did in the darkroom today.
All the best,
Nick.

I've just got an SMC A 50mm f1.7 and an Auto Chinon 28mm f2.8 lens (which lacks the A setting) for my K10D, and have been playing with them taking photos of the kids this evening, which requires a flash.
I've found that the SMC A lens works well in fully manual mode (M) or flash sync mode (X) with the internal flash on the K10D. The fully manual lens, which would be the equivalent of a Pentax M or K series, does not work so well with the built in flash, and seems to fire on full power at all times. This means that you have to manually adjust the aperture of the lens to balance the exposure and certain combinations of short range and shallow DOF are not achievable.
I do have a Cobra 300D flash that is a TTL unit, and this works fantastically with the manual lens and K10D even down to short range and f2.8 :). I just mention this as a word of caution that if any wants to go down the manual lens route, and will need to work with a flash, don't rely on the built in unit, get a TTL unit!
All the best,
Nick.

I have had this occur, but only when I'm using the flash, and shooting frames close together. It never occurs in other scenarios (touch wood here) and it does not persist.
As it only comes on when I'm really draining the juice, could it be a battery issue?
Best Wishes,
Nick.

Hello, I'm a southerner, but now living up north, in Glossop. I've got so much scenery near me, it's really a shame I don't get out more often with the camera.
I promise I'll take more photos as soon as the house is finished.
