Do you prefer that mode over AF.C with central (or auto?) point for shots like these?

35mm plastic fantastic on KP. Love that lens, love the size and the focal range for the crop.

K-3 III - what is "deep learning with learning promises" in AF-system?

You are most likely getting a pre-trained model within the software that might get future updates through firmware updates. It is very highly unlikely that the user can "train" his camera, because he can just as easily "de-train" his model to perform worse than initially intended. And since the casual user is not a part of (nor he should be) model training and development team, it would not make sense to release such a function for a consumer device. Your examples with banking systems are different, since interpreting and supervising text labels from transactional data (with recurring/templatable patterns) is much different (and simpler) from general photography/image recognition and the methods involved.

Upgrading from a Kr: k70 vs kp?

Thank you guys for the helpful responses! Kept these in mind throughout the year. After the Kr started having "bad days" during the last trip with the focus drive or the positioning of the released mirror, went with a lightly used KP. Having just received it, I have yet to test it out thoroughly. But after the first look - I'm very excited. So many quality-of-life details I didn't think I needed! The control-wheels-lock, the WiFi+App sounds great, the Live View seems ages ahead the Kr. Had high expectations for the Focus Peaking feature given the couple manual lenses I own, but it doesn't feel as effortless to focus as I expected, will probably need some further learning.

One question about the default settings of the KP -- if shooting only RAW, do we still want to enable all the default corrections, e.g., the shadows/highlights corrections, aberrations, lens distortion and so on? Can the body over-correct?

I've received another picture with the mount. It visually looks very similar. Could there be something I'm missing, or will this mount from Pentacon work fine on Meyer-Optik?

Thanks all for the comments. I'm currently looking at all the possibilities, and found a few pentacons for parts listed.

Wanted to clarify, since I don't know whether there were any differences in the design when comparing Pentacon vs Meyer-Optik. For example, would a bayonet from this pentacon also fit on a Meyer-Optik (attached a pic)

Visually they look the same, but it's hard to tell without having touched one.

Thanks all. I though initially that it would be M42 when buying, but it appears the seller made the mistake. The price was lower than the shipping, and overall the quality looks very good, so not in a hurry to return yet.

Additional question, does the "bare" portion of the lens, on top of which the mounts are mounted, has some sort of known name? Maybe it's possible to find only the converters for sale? I'm just not sure what to even search for.. :)

What about the exakta->m42 adapter rings? If I understand correctly, these will not have infinity focus, but for any other focal distance the lens would work properly?

---------- Post added 02-02-21 at 10:06 AM ----------

Another question, could maybe a Pentacon 6 converter fit the "bare" portion of the lens?

For example, would a converter like this one (Pentacon 6/Kiev 60 Lens to Pentax PK K Mount Adapter K5,K5II,K7,Kx,Kr,Pentax Q | eBay), Pentacon 6 to Pentax K work with this lens?

Attaching the pictures:

First, bare lens with the adapter removed, second, with the existing adapter that I'm guessing is for Exakta.

Hi all,

got an Orestegor 200mm f4 lens, which appears to have the Exacta mount (at least seems like that -- it is narrower than usual M42, and the mount part is detachable from the lens).

Could you advise what would be the best way to mount this lens on Pentax? I've read about difference between mounting distances when comparing M42 and Exacta mounts. When looking for an adapter, what should I be looking for? Would any Exacta to M42 or similar adapters do the job, or since the lens has detachable mounts, should I be looking for something specifically from Meyer-Optik?

Upgrading from a Kr: k70 vs kp?

Hi all,

I'm looking for an upgrade from Pentax Kr. For my purposes it does the job well, although the 12MP and the poor live view focusing performance could really use an upgrade. Mostly looking for an affordable upgrade, so in the second hand market I'm able to find very good deals for K70. On the other hands, most Kp's go for at least 200$-300$ more, and I can't really decide whether the price increase is worth it (vs., say, a new lens).

From what I'm gathering, the image quality should be similar, however, Kp brings various quality of life improvements which may be fun, e.g., quicker and more silent shutter, additional knobs and probably some software improvements. Is there anything interesting I might be missing?

With the upcoming release of the k3-iii, do you think a significant drop in second hand Kp price is likely?

Advice on 200mm manual

Thank you all for very valuable info! Takumar f3.5 and M/A 200 f4 are definitely on my list, hoping to try out the latter soon.

Vivitar Series 1 and zooms in general are also interesting, will need to take a deeper look (Since I'm seeing there are at least 6 variants of those).

I'm mainly looking for something at the 200mm range, so primes were my initial choice since they are built and tuned for that range. I already have the kit 50-200, but am not satisfied with the performance at 200 end, since I'm getting better pictures with a 135mm lens and a crop.. However, if there are quality zooms that are able to somewhat match those primes, why not. Especially with the later releases, it's very hard to tell without in depth reviews or trying them out by myself -- how much did the latest tech is able to achieve, comparing with 40 year old primes.

Anyway, your experience is very valuable and I appreciate every comment!

Do you find 55-300 of similar sharpness around 200 as with your M/A 200/4? Non-PLM versions sometimes show up for similar prices, maybe that's also worth considering. I always had the impression that primes were always sharper than many cheaper zooms, but it's not easy to benchmark.

Waiting for M100/2.8 and Sonnar 135/3.5. Worried they're a bit too close in range, but hopefully both will get their fair share of use!

Thank you all for the comments. Takumar looks intriguing, although Meyer/Pentacon does seem a bit cheaper, maybe due to their larger supply..?

Takumar looks very interesting. Besides bokeh, are there significant differences in sharpness against the M or A 200mm f4? In other words, is the 9.6 sharpness in the forums exaggerated a bit? :)

Advice on 200mm manual

Hi all,

I'm looking for an affordable tele at the range around 180-200mm. From the various m42 discussions, I've gathered that the Meyer 200mm f4 are a decent choice, with nice bokeh due to 15 blades. Additionally, Sonnar 180mm f2.8 are often recommended against their 200mm version (although most I've seen are their pentacon six versions, not sure how they go with pentax k).

However, I haven't found many comparisonds that include the Pentax versions, e.g., the pentax 200mm f4, or the f2.5 version. How do these fare against the m42 alternatives? Are the price differences worth it?

Maybe there are other similar lens worth looking at?

Sorry If I've missed a thread where this is already discussed, would appreciate any ideas.
