Camera shops?

Do you have a camera shop nearby?

My local camera shop closed a couple years ago and I find myself relying on forums such as this for camera advice rather that my local shop keeper.
My searches tell me the closest one to me is 2 hours away. Not in a direction I ever go.

I can't be alone, who else has suddenly found themselves without a local source of info and equipment?

Just to bring this tread full circle. I returned the Pluto Trigger. I purchased it to be used as a motion trigger, After purchase I discovered it does not perform that function.
Not a knock on Pluto, more of a knock on me for not doing my due diligence.

Anyway, thanks for the replies.

Motion trigger?

Thanks for some great information.

I thought the Pluto trigger might be my quick cheap way into camera trapping, but it was not to be.
Now I have some more "studying" to do.

Thanks for the reply, I have a K70.

The Pluto is marketed as a motion trigger (as well as other functions), it mounts to your camera. I assumed when it detects motion it triggers the remote shutter. At least that is the way I understand it.

Question for you Pluto Trigger experts.

I just received my Pluto Trigger and thought I was purchasing a trigger that would trigger the camera if something moved in front of it. But it appears that the motion is sensed by the phone app? In order to leave my camera unattended to take photo's, I would need to leave my phone there as well to act as the motion sensor?

Am I correct in my assumptions?

Thanks for any help.

Macro advice

Hello, I'm hoping to get a little advice on macro lens selection.

I'm very much a beginner, so please excuse any ignorance I may show, and remember my level when / if you reply. :)

I want to take nice clear close-up photo's of frogs, snakes, insects and plant life. I would say my distances would vary from say 15' to inches away from my target.

I come from a bridge style camera that had a lot of zoom, and I was always struggling with the focus and zoom level not agreeing, if that makes sense.

The lens I am considering is this one, SMC Pentax-D FA 100mm F2.8 Macro WR. I also see a couple of other Pentax 100mm macros are available on the used market that have been discontinued.

From my quick and simple description, would this be a good lens to start with? Or should I be looking at something else?

I've seen posts about turning the lens around, and extension tubes, but to be honest, I think that is above my expertise level at this point.

I appreciate any advice. Thank you.

Motion trigger?

I'm curious if there are any motion activated triggers available out there that will connect to a Pentax DSLR?

I've been thinking about making a camera trap for wild game. The game cameras on the market take terrible photo's.

---------- Post added 02-20-21 at 05:37 AM ----------

A quick google search provide a few quick options.
So I'll change the question a bit and ask if anyone has any experience or recommendations they would like to share on setting up a remote camera trap?

I'd like to thank everyone for the input and comments. You all have really helped, and made me think about things that I would not have thought about.

My camera arrived the other day, Pentax K-70 with the 18-135 lens package. I had originally ordered the body only. But after reading many of the comments here, switched it to include the lens. I am glad that I did..

My first impression is that I have a steep learning curve. I'll admit that in the past I was an "Auto" guy. I really want to get away from that and use the camera to its full capabilities.

So thanks again, and watch for me to ask more "dumb" questions in the future. LOL

Thanks. This is exactly what I did. Canceled the body only and reordered with the 18-135 lens package. With the plans of adding another lens in the near future. Having a complete WP setup makes a lot of sense for what I'll be doing with it.

Yes, I should have mentioned what I have.
Currently, I have two lenses that came with my Ist D.
DA 18-55 1:3.5-5.6 Pentax
SMC Pentax - FAJ 75-300 1:4.5-5.8

And I also have a Sigma 170-500 1:5-6.3 APO DG

I'm really looking for a decent lens that can me the only lens I carry for most of my hikes. Generally speaking it will be for small birds / animals in the 30' - 300' range with some landscape tossed in.
My inexperienced thought was that with the lower light conditions, (wooded cloudy), I would want to satay at the lower aperture number ?

Thanks for all the responses so far, I really appreciate the input/advice/help.

Hello, new guy here looking for a little help.

I'm very much a beginner / amateur at this picture taking game.

I just ordered a Pentax K-70, and now want to choose a lens.
I've got a couple "packaged" type lenses from a previous camera to get me started but would like to find a lens better suited to my use.

Most of my pictures will be taken in Michigan while hiking / hunting. They will be nature based, animals, birds, cool scenery, etc.
Most will be taken in forested areas, meaning shaded, and much of the time it will be cloudy / overcast with little bright sunny conditions.

I'd like a general zoom lens that I can keep on the camera most of the time.

This is the lens I am considering, Tamron Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Autofocus Lens for Pentax AFTamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di Autofocus Lens for Pentax AF

Does anyone have any opinions on this lens? Am I looking at the right lens based on my description? What would you recommend?
Don't be afraid to hurt my feelings, I'm here to learn.
Thank you in advance.
