Yes, the DA*50-135 is a great portrait lens! And the Yongnou manual flash units and remote are simple, robust and cheap.
And outdoors, on a light stand, the bare flash is very good for portability and tolerant of wind. Simply balance the flash with ambient You Tube |

We're doomed. Except for the quadzillion lenses out there that will be useful long after you and me are long dead. Just bought a Tamron 17-35 for a K1-II, works well. Also a Tamron 70 -200 for the same body.
But far worse, bought a Pentax FA 135 2.8 that hasn't been made been made in 21 years! Pentax no longer makes a Full Fame 135 2.8! We're doomed!
And my 14 year old 28-75? It works but we're DOOMED!

Why not see it as an opportunity to learn about and understand light? Most cameras owners don't.

A used DA* 50-135 from a reputable source ( KEH Map Camera ) and keep the rest of the money
On APS-C, it's a great portrait lens. Clients have paid for mine many times over. Mine's been in constant use since buying new from B&H in 2009.
Small and light enough to handhold

So why must ALL software read files? Why isn't some software okay?
I think, as others have pointed out, you have a solution looking for a problem:D

You answered your own question. Lose the wide cotton strap, overkill. Find something maybe an inch wide with non skid rubber underneath. Carry a smaller, lighter lens, like a Tamron 17-50. Don't worry about breaking stuff - your kids will break before your gear.

Maybe we'll have to join up with the Daguerreotype folks. Yep, people still make them. Oh wait - that's a "Mirror With A Memory" - they're not Mirrorless either! We're doomed!

K-3 is fine, lens is more important. Need something longish. Your 540 is okay, just need to:
A. Get it off camera (Light stand, umbrella bracket & cold shoe or one of these and a trigger plus receiver
B. Second flash is optional but any manual flash with an optical trigger will fire from the other flash going off. You could use a reflector as a second light source.
More importantly, you need to know how to connect with folks, understand how they feel. and pose them.
And learn how to see if they are left or right.
And pose them
And light them: short light or broad light them? Low key or high key? Business? I'll skip loop, butterfly and rembrandt
Good gear matters. Understanding and empathy matter more. Can't buy those.

I had no idea that AF Tracking was an issue. Imagine trying to photograph a butterfly flitting about. |

Really never thought about it. Just used the cameras. Zero experience with other brands except for picking up a few demo bodies in stores.
Lots of experience with my lack of good technique though.

OP lobs something into forum. Something is akin to deciding how many angels can dance on head of a pin. Depends on whether pin has a baffle and was designed for full frame.
Angels are of indeterminate size, limiting quantitative analysis of how many can dance on head of aforementioned APS-C or FF sized pin.
In reality, pixels were really pixies and the limitations of resolution are due to Tinkerbell being a sub Medium Format pixie whose mother was a 110 and father a 6x7!

Something with constant aperture which would make Manual Mode and really any exposure mode, easier. Disclaimer: All my lenses are constant aperture and zooms.
A used Pentax DA 17-70/4 is very affordable, versatile and you get a little more reach so good for portraits. Just very good IQ and a bargain.
As suggested the Tamron or Sigma 17-50 2.8 give also you more speed and constant aperture vs the kit.
If you can live with a narrower bottom end, an inexpensive, used Tamron 28-75/2.8 is a very versatile lens, good IQ and also good for portraits.
None are weather proof so if that's important, it's back to Pentax WR stuff which would include the 16-50. The Pentax 50-135/2.8 is a very, very good lens, my workhorse portrait lens.
You can save a lot of money buying used gear from reputable sellers. UsedPhotoPro and KEH typically give 180 day warranties. B&H and Adorama are also honest folks and Amazon is good with returns. Also high rated Japanese sellers on eBay are a good source as Pentax is a big brand in Japan, lots of gear there. I've bought from all for years and have yet to have an issue. Also lucky to have a good, local camera store, a real one, not the display at Best Buy. Mine will match B&H price on new and I've found lots of good used gear there. And they are very patient with beginners so maybe look around.

Manual mode is manual mode. You control aperture, shutter and ISO!
Drives me crazy teaching basic photography classes when I have to show students with Nikon & Canon how to set ISO to manual instead of the default, Auto ISO.
Manual exposure is, well manual exposure. It wasn't an issue with film!

Yes, this is soft. As was the light. It is 28mm. On a K10 at 1/15 sec.. They were, moving about. Handheld. I had no concern it wasn't a prime. |
