Hi people,

I'm participating the Apple Insomnia Photo Contest (for students), and in order to win anything, your photo has to be one of the top 25 vote-getters. Basically, I would really appreciate some votes if people have some time to spare :-)

Here is my entry:
http://edcommunity.apple.com/insomnia/item.php?itemID=330
(In order to vote, select a rating on the right side and then click on the arrow to the right of the rating)

Also, my gf has entered the contest too and I'm sure she would like some votes as well:

Thanks so much :)

Firmware updates

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure you should only install the 1.20 firmware. I don't think you need to do all 3 in order because it erases and rewrites the entire firmware for the camera for each update.

Somebody else should probably confirm this before you update though.

NEW Pentax rebates effective TODAY!

Problem solved...sorta. My grip arrived, and it was missing the tray/door that holds the remote and the extra SD card. I don't know if was Cameta's fault or Pentax's fault, but it was definitely MIA...so I guess it worked out in terms of the rebate. Now I just have to wait for a new one for another week :(

So if I purchased it on April 27, and sent in the request for a rebate on May 5, I am requesting a rebate within the May 1 - July 31 window, so maybe they'll accept the rebate?

Lets hope

New K10D firmware 1.20 completely ignores almost everything

I was thinking along those same lines today...There's a girl in my college intro photo class who always blames the equipment for her problems. If she's not happy with the negatives, she blames the lens (not the camera :p ). If she gets the exposure wrong when printing pictures on RC paper, she usually changes the developer...of course she doesn't notice that nobody else is having problems but her. I kinda feel sad for her, but then I get pissed that I have to find the correct exposure times for the second time. Thank goodness today was the last day and she's graduating :)

I swear that I ran Pentax Remote Assistant 3 accidentally before updating the firmware and it appeared to work. Maybe someone could try this before upgrading their firmware to make sure I wasn't hallucinating?

K10D Build qualit VS ...

I really was shocked by how cheap the Rebel XTi feels in person. This cheapness doesn't really come across in magazine reviews and such, but in person it is really obvious. I think even the Nikon D40 has the XTi beat in terms of ergonomics and solid build quality.

DS owner, buy k10d or wait little bit longer ?

I am extremely pleased with my K10D, and though I'm only a college student, I can't find any problems with it at all. There are no features that I wished I had at all, and there are many features (like sensitivity priority) that I haven't even tried yet.

Being a Mac user, I have heard a lot of the same questions posted time and again. Should I get a new MacBook, even though Apple may update soon? From all those posts I have really found three questions that one should ask themselves when making a purchase like this:

1. Do I need it now?
You say you have one big photo shoot coming up, so it seems like you need it soon.

2. Is there something wrong with the K10D so that I should wait for a newer model?
Some would say VPN is a problem, but I can't find traces of VPN on my photos...but that's just me.

3. Does it make financial sense to get it now?
I don't know the whole deal with exchange rates, but I gather that you will pay about 50% less money to get the K10D in the states vs. in England. Makes financial sense to me.

I personally know nothing about the new models that should arrive this year, but I do know that my K10D has no problems at all. I haven't noticed issued with VPN in my pictures, and I personally think that VPN is really not as big of an issue as others do.

Just some food for thought.

Adaptall/Pentax K100D

I have used both the PK and PKA Adaptall adapters for the same Tamron 90mm macro. I've found the PKA to have a mind of its own...sometimes it stops the on-camera controls from controlling the aperture, but when that happens I just take the lens out and put it back in and it works fine.

I've got a feeling that it has to do with some contact on the adapter not making contact with the camera. When it stops working consistently I am planning on trying the Super Nintendo treatment on it: rubbing alcohol and cotton swabs :-)

Poll: Best macro lenses for the K10D (medium telephoto)

I have an old-school version of the Tamron 90mm and it is definitely a wonderful lens. I have no experience with the Pentax 100mm, but I think either would probably be excellent.

5 lenses everyone should have for their K10D?

I totally agree about the Tamron 90mm Macro. I "borrowed" my mom's mid-eighties version (adaptall P/KA mount), and it is easily my favorite lens despite not having autofocus. I'm sure the new versions with autofocus are quite amazing as well, and I bet they don't weigh a ton like the old ones do.

I would also recommend the Pentax FA 50mm f/1.4. It is great for portraits, though you have to stand back a bit.

I know that if you password protect a PDF in Acrobat that you can decide whether the user can print the document or copy text to the clipboard. Beyond that, I'm not sure how distribution of secure PDFs works...I would suggest googling something like "secure pdf ebook distribution"

I could be wrong, but I believe that in Adobe Acrobat Pro you can limit the user's right to print or copy a PDF file. Maybe you want to look into that?

Fa 35 Vs Da 40
Posted By Kendall015

I was going to start a new thread, but I think my question should be in here instead.

I currently have the FA 50 f/1.4, and though I like it a lot, I feel like the focal length is not all that useful. Often I have to stand back pretty far in order to get a good picture, and in tight spaces that sometimes isn't possible. I was considering buying the DA 40, especially since it is so cheap, but I was kinda considering the FA 35 as well. I really can only afford one of the three right now, and I guess I could use some help answering my questions:

Is the 40mm focal length a good focal length for digital, or is 35 better (because 35 ends up basically being a normal lens)?
Is the f/2.8 a big limitation, or is it not really a big deal?
If you were choosing between FA 50 vs. FA 35 vs. DA 40, and you were looking for an indoors/low light/normal (or close to normal) which would you choose?

Thanks in advace

EDIT: Also, is the IQ comparable between the three, or are there major differences?

View finder 1.2 magnifier

I like the magnifier just because it keeps my screen clean in back. I don't think the 1.2x magnification is that noticable imo, and it may be a tad dimmer than the regular viewfinder but I am willing to make that tradeoff in order to keep from rubbing my face against the screen.

Then again, I think that this should really cost more like $25 instead of $35+

New K10D Owner from Chicago

Hello from a new K10D owner from Chicago (though I currently go to Beloit College in WI)

I got into photography about a year and a half ago when I started using my mom's old ME Super that had been collecting dust for years. After using the ME Super for awhile, I decided that I really wanted a DSLR so that I could get instant feedback, which really helps when you're learning photography.

Last summer I ended up getting a Pentax *ist DL, which I had fun with for quite awhile. I began noticing the limitations of the *ist DL, though, and I really grew to dislike the noisy images that it produced. This February I went to the Chicago Auto Show, and all my pictures that I shot at ISO 800 were basically ruined because of the noise. After the show I began to look into getting a new camera.

I literally spent a whole month weighing the options. Since my view of Pentax's digital line was somewhat negative, given my experience with the *ist DL, I started out looking at the big two. The Rebel XTi was both cheap feeling and uncomfortable, so I quickly eliminated it. After checking out the Nikon D80, I really liked it a lot, but I wanted to see the K10D in person before I made the decision to spend that much money.

I had called pretty much every camera store in Madison, WI, Janesville, WI and Rockford, IL in an effort to find one in stock, but I came up empty. Finally I decided that I would try one last time to see one in person, and if I couldn't then I was going to go buy a D80 that day. I called all the places I called previously, but I also found a new place to call named Camera Craft in Rockford, IL. I called up and to my surprise they had a K10D!

I went there that night and I probably spent an hour talking to an employee and trying out the camera in the store. I was so impressed with the feel, build quality, and the amazing feature set of the camera that I bought it that night...even though I knew that I could save some money by ordering it over the internet. I am extremely happy with this camera, though I really wish that I could use it for my Intro Photography class (where we use black and white film).

Anyways, sorry for the long story, but I look forward to learning from you all.
