Can someone check the accuracy/difference of all AF points in AF-S Select

I did this with three different Bodys an 2 Lenses.
One of the body's where additional one month away for calibration as I couldn't believe this.
All shows exactly same behavior as I showed her long ago in the beginning of this thread (Test results included on page 3).

I use now the K3 III as I use my K3II: only Spot.... as many here say: very frustrating.
And I' my out of those discussion about tracking...when a lens shows this behavior in static situation...
... how can the performance be good in AFC and movement?
All videos of K3III on YT and deep discussion why a photo of a bird is not sharp although the red dot in the rear screen showed it must be sharp... How can you discuss this, when even static situation are not working?

Apart from that : Camera and Lens are excellent

Subject Recognition - Eye Detection AF. Proper testing results Firmware 1.70

Hm.. I often think, our cameras and lenses behave differently, when I read all the issues, threads, answers and questions. Maybe bigger tolerance combination, than really wanted.

As we discussed in other threads, MY issue is, that outer AF points have big problems with back or front focus in the combination K3III and 16-50 PLM.

So the camera indicate that it find the eye of the big puppet head of my daughter (see the parallels ;-)) in the OVF AND later on the screen.... but it's totally out of focus.

And - here's the mentioned difference: apart from whatever custom image profile... it works...
But only the INDICATION.... not the real sharpness....

Apart from that... I sound like a scratched vinyl, I know: I would like, if the red light of the boxes would stay in AF-C... black boxes on dark brown eyes (like yours) are hardly visible in the OVF.

Ha... simelar here... but really exactly the same combo as you, seberry. The DFA 50 1.4 has a better hit rate now ( I think it is better)
But the 16-50 PLM is still not really better at 2.8. Although the focus is not so tight it has still lots of front and back focus inconsistent over the area.
I will still have to use only the center.
May be it's better in some "through a branch" focusing... but not for my use, to but a person eye NOT in the center of the picture.
For that I still use recompose ore Live view. ***
By the way: it would be interesting if now the XS center is more or less the SPOT focus.
It (Spot) was always mentioned to be better/more thin than the Select center. (as mentioned here or in a parallel thread)
That could be one atvantages for me at least.

***by the way 2: I did some smal testing at 1.4 in live view.... and the face detect is really more or less an eye detect (focusing) ... sure, the whole face is highlighted... but even person's with long nose, have a sharp eye an a blurred nose tip ;-)
So quite nice to use at this aperture
Normally I use the smallest AF area in Live view...but that works quite good, too

New firmware for K-1 and K-3 Mark III

@FozzFoster: you can "store" more or less a special position of your AF Point.

As an example: when you often make a portrait in... portrait (vertical) mode :-) you can push the leveler and the AF point will move instantly to the "upper" position where the eye or face is.

When you flip the camera horizontal again the AF point will be in a different stored location.

Advantages of the 20-40 compared to the 16-50 PLM

I think, that would be the way to go out with the camera: decide what kind of walk you want to do: With light stuff and limited in optical way or with more or heavy stuff with better range and light on the sensor.

I don´t really understand the way Pentax went with the decision to make it such bigger and heavier compared to the old 16-50. Ok…it is better in all ways…but such (!) more metal, plastic, motors and glass…wasn’t that possible a little bit in the space of the old one? I´ve owned the old one too, and – different to your opinion @Sandy – the step for me was not “slightly”.

And the comparison to FF lenses is a little bit unfair ;-) …that was always the advantage of the APSC lenses (less weight and dimension), and with the new 16-50 PLM this was nearly gone.

But, @Sandy, good to know: I wasn´t aware of the FF 24-70…I thought it would lighter and smaller than the - for me not really APSC 16-50 PLM…puh…I was (beside looking @ the 20-40) always looking for the K1 (II) with exactly your mentioned lenses….I never had them in my hand (no camera, no lens). I knew, that the K1 is bigger and heavier (there are a lot of pictures and videos with the K3 (I,II,III) side by side…but I wasn´t aware that with the lens it´s even more bigger and heavier in that way you mentioned.

Ok...I will search for a good, used copy of the 20-40...normally I buy lenses new...

(don´t get me wrong with my above mentioned "complains" with the PLM: I like it a lot....the searching for the 20-40 is more a luxury problem)

@jersey: ah... interesting.... that could be a magic thing of the lens: the difference between print and screen. Thanks!

@Loyd: that doesn't really help to keep my money in my pocket ;-)

I must find some good words, when I speak with my wife... ;-)

I own the 16-50 PLM.
I'm quite happy with this lens (except some Issues with outer AF points, that I can't use with the K3II and K3 III.).

It's sharp and fast and the bokeh is good.

BUT I must admit, that I often look at the 20-40.
I know it is a beautiful lens with excellent build quality.

Are there some atvantages in IQ with this lens compared to the PLM in exactly this focal range?

The real atvantage is for sure the size and weight.... but real (in my understanding big) disadvantages are the limeted focal range and the aperture at the "longer" end.

People often tell about the magical rendering of this lens.... I must admit, that I didn't really see it... and in some pictures the bokeh is a liite bit troubled compared to the newer PLM (I know: this is subjective).
... nevertheless... I always look at this beauty... but this (the elegance) is not really enough to spend the money ;-)

I had to find the name with Google... but only with adding "Pentax"... should I worry about, for not knowing all Pentax-celebrity....?

Maybe he sells it because he is not convinced, that the K3 III is good enough... or he ordered the fully black one to create a new YT video about the experience with it :-)

Sorry...I´ve set this like you, too. (i´ve set this to the "Down" button which normally controls the brightness of the back LCD

But absolutely different kind of story concerning visibility due to brightness and thickness!
And it´s NOT working in AF-C while tracking!

Apart from other discussion: I´m totally jealous concerning the beautiful visible red squares of the Nikon. And this is real....not this fake video of the K3 III with the very small hint, that the boxes are black in reality.

@StigVidar: sure :-) I didn't change my "loading behavior"

@Not a Number: as wrote above. I didn't change my whole setup... so I don't have to think about those details: it worked before and has to work afterwards.

And now, after changing batteries, it worked.
So everything is fine (for me).
Let's wait for @Rikoo Lah feedback.

Hm... interesting. I also tried 2 "normal" chargers.
May be I should give a third a try? But this is not they way it should be...

Hm... it didn't change the behavior.

BUT: as I change the battery (!) ... it worked!?!

... strange...

May be the camera didn't like the battery, which did the power supply during the update :-)

Jep! Same with mine. No charging possible. Or better say: the lights on the camera don't flash.
So for all customer without an additional charger I would recommend not to do this update.
Where can we address this problem?

Hopefully good news: After a long discussion with the German Ricoh Hotline with no result, I was contacted by a more technical involved expert, who is also a official "Ricoh representative" in the German forum.
He received my documentation (already translated) and agreed, that this is so deep in technical question, that it should be send directly to Japan.
That's it... that's what I wanted from the first day and after three copies of cameras and two of the lens: confirmation that the problem is addressed!
May be there is a result/answer, that there is no chance to solve it due to physics... or the chance to solve it by fine adjustment for some additional points.... or a new lens information that includes the field curvature (or whatever).
It's addressed... and that makes me a little bit calm now.
(by the way I make the "joke", when he will send something to Japan: "Please give a hint, that everyone would enjoy the name of the User Mode in the display, like in previous Pentax cameras" ;-) )

Ok..I must be careful with my claims! :-l

I was not testing the DFA 50 1.4 in that way like the 16-50 PLM.

I shot some test shots out of the hand: portrait of my daughter with f 2.0 with some outer AF points....

For the 35 2.0 I took an older paper aiming set (not the one shown in my detailed analysis some sides before).

When I've more time, I will test them in a... lets say: better way.
But frankly speaking: I'm tiered of testing.

When it's not working the usual way, like I do my portrait...

Good side of this: I'm using more and more live view with the smallest AF point.
Or with touch. It's fantastic working, accurate and sharp.

The better face detection helps, too. Not tat 1.4... but 2.0 :-)

To note something again in my started topic: ;-)

I've had 3 (!) K3 III
And two 16-50 PLM.

The camera was returned two times to Amazon (you can say about Amazon what you want - but they are great when you are a good customer and have problems with your purchased products... so thanks to them here).

The second K3 III was in "repair" after Ricoh asked for it. It returned (as mentioned here) after one month only with one word in the paper : calibrated.

Nothing changed!

After my daughter kicked the 16-50 PLM from the table, I was forced to buy a new one (It was a little bit of "luck" that I received money from a patent right after this accident... otherwise I would not have the budget to invest again so much).

Again: no change.

I know: this is still not reliable... but after now so much combination for a private person... I loose my trust in this combination.

Don't get me wrong: I'm still using both... but in the old manner: Spot and recopose. For this the 16-50 PLM is great from optical side! I ve tho old 16-50 as well and I know what I'm talking about.

By the way: I mentioned it many times here... I ve have similar problem with the FA35 2.0 and DFA 50 1.4 wide open on the K3 III... not as prominent as with the new 16-50...but in this way that I don't use other points than center....

And honestly speaking:
I'm not able to discuss all the AF-C threats in this forum, like : why a focus hit or not hit. Or what Auto mode or tracking mode is good for chasing birds...
... since I even struggle with AF-S, I would be not able to say if misfocus is done by no accurate algorithm...or the here in this thread mentioned responsible weakness of outer AF points itself!

I use Live View in the same manner.

For me due to a different kind of problem: I don´t trust the outer AF points and that´s why I´m using Live view, to get rid of "center and recompose".

May be for you it is a wrong tool. Not to everyone.

Welcome :-)
This is number 1 point of "please improve in next firmware" since the release of the camera.
Nobody really knows why Pentax improved so many things via firmware, that seems to be much more complicated... and ignore the easiest wish: please show the given USER name on the screen.
In every forum... in every deep feedback it is mentioned.

I've little bit the fear, that they've done something in the system, that makes it impossible to change this (I've no clue about programming).
