Ultra Wide for Full Frame lens?

Hello!
Just recently did some shots comparing wide lenses. Sorry I don't have them immediately handy to post, but I compared the FA 35mm, Irix 15mm, Rokinon 20mm, Tokina 19-35mm, and the DA 12-24. I purposely had the sun in upper corner of frame to test for flare. The Irix 15 is absolutely wonderful! Contrast and color were outstanding, sharp corner to corner (at least as compared with other ultra-wides), and a joy to use. The Rokinon was also a great performer. The much older Tokina 19-35mm was a flare monster, but then I WAS shooting an ultra-wide into the sun. I was able to hold my hand out of frame to shield the lens and solve the problem, and the lens performed admirably, especially considering the cost. The DA 12-24 works on FF to about 16mm (hood cannot be used at that focal length) and made a good image (it's a a Tokina lens with SMC coatings). The one lens I didn't use was the Sigma 10-24 previously posted about. I have two of these, and neither one is acceptably sharp, particularly edge to edge, as compared with these other lenses - so I don't use them anymore. Want one?🥴. I have the Irix 11 as well, but didn't take with me that day.

I shot this just to prove to the uninitiated that it's not always about the quantity of pixels, but rather the overall QUALITY of the shot. The K7 is a 14.6 megapixel camera that dates from 2009. After shooting this, I did VERY MINOR color correcting, and went straight to town and had a 20" x 30" poster made of it. Even at that enormous size, you can still see individual hairs on the fly I purposely left in the shot. I love new toys, but you don't NEED the latest megapixel monster to create great photography. I like a tagline I see in the Pentax forums..."Look at the PICTURE, NOT THE PIXELS!"

But, if you ARE looking at pixels...bear in mind there is a bit of resolution loss taking this down to a reasonable size of 3.6mb for posting 🥴

HDR Advanced vs. regular mode

Honestly, it was just camera default, on purpose. The shots are also not otherwise modified or corrected. It wasn't my best day shooting so I turned it into a test run. By the way, no tripod either, this is just breathe careful, stay steady and let the camera figure out the stitching together part - something I find the K1 II does better than say the K3 II.

No tripod here, this is just breathe careful, stay steady and let the camera figure out the stitching together part - something I find the K1 II does better than say the K3 II. Tripod is definitely MORE than advisable for something like this, HOWEVER, it's interesting to see just how WELL the K1 II stitched these together given the lack of a tripod. In fact, I'd say it's another feather in Pentax's cap to have this work so well.

I also thought a few of the indoor displays, particularly the maintenance and house mock up ones, benefit a good deal from this setting. Something I wasn't expecting. More experience is needed.

Good info and thanks! More experience is needed here for me, haven't really played with HDR at all. As time allows...

Greetings all!

For any who haven't really played with or seen the HDR Advanced mode in the K1 II, I thought I would post a link to some test shots I did fall of 2022 at the Altoona, Pa Railroad Museum. Not sure what made me think of it then, but I started using it and it was kinda addictive lol. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it actually did help some of the shots and wasn't as much gimmick as you might think. Other shots, it actually made things look grimy because it was now capable of displaying ANY amount of grayness in the scene. I provide them here so you can judge for yourself... I'll just stand back and watch the arguments happen lol🥴. I thought it made sense to share them rather than just delete.

These are NOT award winning pictures, as such I'm not looking for critique in that area. Just interesting subject matter for a comparison of this feature. By the way, if you haven't tried it yet, sunrise photos with HDR ADV look promising too. Sorry, no sample shots left to upload but I was impressed with the rest shots I did last year, looking forward to trying it in earnest in the spring.

Here is the link, it will be active for quite a while as I'm in no danger of running out of room on Flickr...

Thinking of getting a Nikon FF DSLR

I have a D750, and other than the fact it's not nearly as intuitive to use as any of my Pentax bodies, it's an awesome camera. Like you, I was looking at the 700, perhaps the 610, but after considerable research, the one thing that kept coming up was shutter failure on nearly every model OTHER than the 750, which seemed to be universally praised by comparison. Compliments like "work horse" and "dependable" were the only things I found related to the 750. I was seriously thinking of the 850 as well, but once again, I seemed to find a higher than normal amount of shutter failure reports, and even given an appropriate amount of skepticism when getting info from the net, the pattern was consistent enough to make me nervous.

I just noticed a 750 with battery grip, 3 batteries and other sundry add-ons going around $600. For the extra performance, durability, and pixels, my money would definitely be on that. Also, previous poster made a great point, dual SD cards is the way to go. It's an incredible body for Nikonians. And pervious poster is right - forget pre-ai lenses. I have an assortment of ai and newer lenses, and they're terrific. Metering with older stuff is a pain.

Tamron 90mm macro weird thing happened

I have the Tamron 90mm macro (same version as yours), Pentax FA 100mm and 50mm macros, and more recently came into the latest DFA 100mm and 50mm macros. I love the Tamron, great in everything you guys say it is, except I was disappointed with the autofocus clutch mechanism. I guess it works fine on other brands of camera, just not Pentax. I wonder why we got the short end of Tamron's stick here?

I have HEARD, but am not personally sure about, that if you have a mismatch between camera and lens auto/manual focus setting, it WILL cause damage eventually. Maybe one of you guys has more and or correct insight on this. I'd have to physically SEE the mechanisim in order to make a judgement on that, and no way am I tearing that thing apart.

I actually bought a couple of the Tamron 90's as the reviews were all pretty good and I generally like Tamron. I have the 28-75, 17-50, and 70-200 f/2.8 lenses and think highly of each one. The clutch thing on this 90 was something I didn't understand before I bought them. I have a Tokina 100mm macro with the same type clutch for my Nikon D750, and that clutch really turned that thing into a macro machine! But when I got ahold of my first DFA 50 and 100 with focus shift, I realized those were the lenses to beat.

Does anyone know for certain if a mis-sync between focus setting can damage the focus mech in a Tamron 90?

The impressions of a long time Pentax user after his first Nikon Experience
Posted By Pixeltrove

I shot Nikon film cameras for years, I have a very complete collection of bodies and lenses. When I finally decided to get back into photography, naturally I got a Nikon to capitalize on my lens collection. I always loved the intuitive ease of use of my Nikon stuff.

Then I bought a D750.

It's nice, don't get me wrong, but soon after my Nikon purchase I picked up a K1 II, primarily for the astrotracer function. As a result, I spent a great deal more time playing with and learning the Pentax body, figuring I already knew how to operate a Nikon. The Pentax turned out to be a wonderfully intuitive design and interface, I had NO trouble AT ALL figuring it out even without reading a manual. I naturally assumed that my Nikon was similar, because of my previous experiences with the brand.

BOY WAS I WRONG!

As compared to the now several Pentax bodies I own, the Nikon is obtuse. Buttons and controls just aren't as easy to find or use, settings are buried in menus, etc, etc. Pentax has it all freaking over Nikon in this regard at least, and this is coming from a long time Nikon fan. In fact, for film bodies I still prefer Nikon over Pentax. Now, when I get the Nikon out to use it, usually within 3 minutes you'll hear "What the %@$#! did this *@#&%*! Nikon do NOW!!??

It's not always a happy time...

Don't get me wrong, I like the Nikon. I like Canon for that matter. I like them ALL. They are all great tools for doing what they do, and most of them do it well, even if we ARE able to quibble about some esoteric little thing that maybe could have been designed better. So I don't particularly like product bashing. In this case, I'm just saying that Pentax deserves kudos for an incredibly intuitive user interface AS COMPARED WITH the competition. I think it's also noteworthy to mention that Pentax also ALLOWS you control over things that the others automate without your input. I know I've found several things I the D750 that I have absolutely no control over that I CAN change in the K1 II. To Nikon's credit, the automation does a pretty good job, but once you are spoiled to having your settings have settings, it's kinda hard to go back.

In my humble opinion, if someone OBJECTIVELY compared a similar Nikon and Pentax, setting for setting, feature for feature, Pentax SHOULD win hands down. I've noticed there seem to be many little "features" that the online reviewers always overlook, and in some cases outright get wrong. It has always struck me that many of these "reviews" are actually quite biased, or are inadvertently biased due to the author's unfamiliarity with what they are reviewing (one would think if you were going to publish a technical review, you would do enough experimentation and research to be a genuine expert on the thing you are reviewing and about to pronounce judgement on).

I guess my point is this: I don't have a horse in this race; I don't really care if Pentax is "the best", or if that honor truly belongs to some other manufacturer. I'm about as objective as it comes in this matter, and I genuinely think all brands have something to offer. But as the OP pointed out, in an interface showdown between Nikon and Pentax, Nikon looses. It's not horrible, but Pentax deserves some recognition here for thoughtful design.

My 2¢ worth.

You can get Tav mode on a K-01 by setting ISO to auto and then going to manual as I recall. It's not documented in the manual but I've done it, comes right up on screen as "Tav".

This little guy was a riot... quite a pose!

I'm just getting back into shooting again, so the Aviary was a practice session. Light isn't great there to begin with, and clouds kept rolling around making for a moment of nice golden light, followed by a lot of diffuse, but bland colors. Got this one at just the right time.

Completely agree! I also agree with a previous poster who comented that in some cases, the body/lens may not fetch enough to bother selling, so in those cases I "collect", or if someone can use it, I may even give it away. I know a college student who is majoring in photography, and when it came time for his film class, I gave him my old Nikon FG and a couple lenses an SB-20 flash. As much as I love it, I'll never use it again, so he may as well enjoy it, which he has... immensely. So it's gone to a good home...

I agree completely. I had similar experience when I first started using my Pentax cams, and eventually had that "duh" moment when I realized what I had set wrong. I think it may even have been the same thing, not able to activate SR, but I don't remember right off what setting I had wrong to correct it. I just know once I found it, it made perfect sense. I might have had the remote trigger option turned on.

I've got six digital bodies now if you count my Nikon D750 along with 5 Pentax, and you don't want to know the number of lenses. If anyone has LBA (lens buying addiction), It's me😁. But it's fun and I learn alot. I want to do a shot with all my gear set up on a table with white background, like a good product shot. We should start a thread for this, everyone post a pic of all your gear. What do we call such a thread..."Bragging rights"?...maybe "Lens Envy"?...or just plain "more money than brains"...🙄

The DA 55-300 is indeed a "consumer lens", but for being the lowly entry level telephoto for apsc, it does one hell of a nice job, even on my full frame K1 II. If anyone needs a very decent, yet inexpensive telephoto, my personal opinion is that this little gem provides unbeatable VALUE. Price for quality, it's the best 300mm you're likely to find. Just check out the lens reviews and some of the sample shots on this forum.

I have a 500mm Pentax prime, and this thing is competitive 😀. Very pleasant images on a budget.

I know this is old now, but in case anyone reads this thread, I now own the DA 12-24 by Pentax. Wanna buy my Sigma 10-20? There is NO comparison, the Pentax blows the Sigma away. Sharp as hell in the corners, even wide open! Absolutely the best uwa I've encountered, and I have quite a collection from 17mm on up for both Nikon and Pentax. Sigma is OK, but look at the same scene from both it and the 12-24, and you'll never buy the Sigma. By the way, it's even awesome on my full frame K1 II, turns into a 16-24mm without vignette. On full frame, it pretty much kills my FA 20-35mm.
