K-01 - why did it not suceed?

Wait, what? Someone said the K-01 was aimed at 'art' buyers,....?

PFFFFFFFT,.... It was aimed at "Lifestyle" buyers, not artists.

The screen is plenty bright enough - sit one next to the original BMD Pocket camera to see how well the K-01 screen holds up. Sure, it's not the 1000nits screens we get now, but nothing from 2012 was.

Frankly, what ruined sales, especially for the Lifestyle crowd, was Marc Newson's bad exterior design.

I wanted to have a go at stitching a more complex subject, so I walked out to Sampford Spiney church today. This is 36 frames in four rows of nine again, which seems to be a number that works well in Microsoft ICE. So now I'm reasonably confident that I can deal with any wider angle with just the 18-55mm if I have to. At least I can when it's a static subject.:)

(I've taken more photos this week than I did in the whole second half of last year. Yay me!)

Abandoned mine workings along the river Walkham. This one's a single frame, not a stitch.

Using the K-01 as a webcam

If you've got a TV or monitor with an HDMI input (most do, these days), you can check the suitability of your HDMI output from your K-01 for the cost of a cable … maybe even borrow one for a few minutes.
Having established this, the very cheap HDMI-USB adaptor/converters do work, (I've just bought one, for a different reason), but I had to revert to Windows 7 for a seamless install, the current version of Windows 10 giving all sorts of error messages, both on a 32-bit laptop and a 64-bit desktop, with the four different freeware programs I tried, so system compatibility can be an issue!
As for power consumption, the battery should last a good time using HDMI out, as the LCD screen on the camera is (I assume) disabled in this configuration. It is on my cameras, but I don't have an actual K-01 to double check.
Good Luck ;)

I use my yellow Q-7 the same way.
I don't dress any differently than usual, but after one look, people 'write it off' as a toy, and I can take pictures at my convenience - so it basically is a stealth camera.
Honestly, I still cannot see the LCD in bright light, though, so I still would not purchase another "Q" or a K-01 without an EVF.

Hey I have a question. Does this have to be specifically a SD *HC* card? I have a SD XC and my understanding was that it was just an extended capacity from the SD HC. But when I power on with menu it says, cannot use this card.
Now it is a SD mini in an adapter...So I need to know which to go buy. We use the mini's around here much more than the standard cards...
Thanks!

well, 3rd time was a charm as conditions were perfect for an awesome view of the waterfall lit up by the sun. The first two trips were a total bust, even though it is a 3 1/2 hour drive to get to the park from where I live, that is no big deal for me. Conditions were perfect and had a blast shooting,

K70 or K1II for Astro (Milky Way Landscapes)

I don't know if this helps you, but I owned a Rokinon/samyang/bower (forget which one) 24mm 1.4 and shot astro with my K-1. It did have some issues wide open, but I wouldn't say terrible. At least my copy, because apparently that's an issue. Not sure how it compares to what he has. Certainly stopping down would be your best bet to clear up any issues. I ended up choosing to keep my Rokinon 14mm 2.8 instead mostly for focal length reasons. I liked getting more of the night sky in one shot. I felt like the light advantages weren't as big a deal for me since I've been moving more into stacking images and using astro tracer.

Here's an album with a few night shots with the 24mm 1.4 wide open on the K-1

for comparison, here are two shots from the same location between the 24mm 1.4 wide open and the 14mm 2.8 wide open on the K-1. (Excuse the bad light painting).

Colour and tone rendering - CCD Samsung GX-10 (Pentax K10D) vs CMOS Pentax K-3

I do agree with what you are saying. DNG files do have all the camera information including embedded profile.

What I am suggesting is even with an embedded profile different raw converters will render the image data differently. As an example the same boring image with the embedded profile (645z) in use in LR and Darktable (I do not really use DT that much). In both cases images SOOC without any editing input from me show marked difference

That's interesting, Mike. My Dad bought a K20D (the K10 had been superceded) and neither of us liked the K20 output as much (unless we needed the increased megapixel count for cropping). These things are so subjective though.

The K-70 has also a very short left side with sharp edges on the bottom plate, which makes it awkward to use with manual focus lenses (K, M, A). So now I have it permanently incorporated in a home made DSLR scanner for which it is actually excellent due to the pixel-shift feature.
Currently I use the K5-II (16 Mp) for my daily photography, which I can recommend wholeheartedly, and pre-ordered the K3-III as an upgrade.

Pentax ist DL - Looking for Advice

With Pentax the red af point indicator doesn’t indicate focus achieved, it only tells you where the focusing system is looking. The green hexagon tells you focus is achieved.

Also the dl2 you refer to has a horrible pentamirror not pentaprism finder. It is dark and offers a generally poor experience. None of which has anything to do with what I said. When I said the 6mp sensor is more tolerant of focusing errors I wasn’t talking about the experience of the photographer during the process but of the outcome. The sensor has a wider tolerance for focusing because it lacks the level of detail of modern sensors. Lenses that gave perfectly good images on those 6mp sensors, and autofocus algorithms that worked at 6mp weren’t always up to the task when the sensor resolution went up. This is why the original 18-55 was redesigned and why the 50-200 was great on my k100d super but not so great on my k50.

The overall point is meant to be, that larger errors in focusing will be tolerated by the final output. This isn’t meant to say it’s easier to focus, just that the low resolution permits more errors without negatively impacting the final image. There’s simply a larger tolerance.

Sharing glass?!?

If someone asked to borrow one of my lenses, it'd be like they asked to borrow one of my vital organs... and they'd get the same response, I'm afraid :o I've seen too many folks man-handling cameras and lenses, and I'm awfully protective of my gear. Maybe if I knew the other person really well and knew they'd be as careful with their gear as I am, it might not be such a concern...

We are but who really cares. I have only been asked "why Pentax" once (but i've only had a Pentax for about 5 months), to which I replied, "Because I like it". At first the Nikon shooter was very nice, he came up to me and said, "I notice you had a nice camera" and started a casual conversation. That lasted about 45 seconds then he was trying to tell me this, tell me that, Nikon is better, you should have gotten a Canon, etc..... After only about 5 seconds of that I told the gentleman to "Please stop right there and please stop talking to me, I do not know you, I do not care about what you have to say. You started off nice enough but turned into something I do not wish to waste my time on. Have a nice day with your Nikon and I'll have one with my Pentax", and never heard from the guy again.

Canikons are like street priests. They speak like canikons are the holy gospel and try to push their religon upon the world. I do believe there is free will amongst the free and I tend to tell every canikon that I am entitled to what makes me happy and do not need to justify my SUPERIOR (haha) Pentax to you.

Exactly correct!
Pentax have made a reasonable effort to maintain a degree of backward compatibility with their earlier lenses, the very reason I moved to Pentax when my "other brand" screw-mount film camera died … I already had the lenses ;)
You may read reference to the magic Pentax "Green Button" performing all sorts of wonderous things when in manual mode on the later cameras. This is true, but what may be less well realised is that the functionality was included on the early cameras in that the AE-L button performs an alternative role when in manual mode :)
If you don't have a manual, it's available for download from Ricoh at http://www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/english/support/man-pdf/istdl.pdf

Hi guys

I haven't been on the site for a long time so apologies, Covid and other family stuff had taken president.

Been out in the last few weeks trying to get back into my photography and started to experiment. Having a go at ICM or Intentional Camera Movement, and the images that I have uploaded are my attempts, okay as in any type of photography what people do is a matter of personal taste, some may find these boring, some may not.
