Glasgow City Murals

I spent the last week in Glasgow with my GRIII. I was born in Glasgow but I left over 40 years ago and this was my first trip back there. Obviously there have been lots of changes but one nice thing is the recent trend to paint colourful murals on the sides of buildings and other empty wall spaces. They certainly brighten up a gritty city and I enjoyed finding them and photographing them with the mighty GRIII. I think I've got over 30 murals but here is my personal top ten:-

Saint Mungo.

Bubbles.

Bubbles 2

St Enoch and child.

The worlds most economical taxi.

Honey I shrunk the kids.

Study of a woman in black.

Strathclyde University.

Clutha Pub.

Dr Connolly I presume.

A couple months ago I acquired the 018F Extension Tube, which is nominally for the 52B/BB 90/2.5 Macro lens... however I'm coupling it with the 63B 180/2.5 instead. This gives a max magnification of approximately 1:2, which is often more than sufficient for me, albeit at a penalty of around one stop of light.

I went with my dad in 1988 to purchase this 1976 Porsche 911S from it's original owner. Dad's no longer with us, but I always feel a connection with him when I take this car out.

I drove it solo last month for 4,000 miles across 11 states: Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, and Montana. Speed limits were strictly observed, of course.

Butterfly weed AKA orange milkweed, a minor crop and a deep crop from the same image file. Did you spot the bug in the first image? This lens never fails to impress.

Flying Scotsman - having been lifted at Liverpool from the ship bringing the loco back from the USA, the loco is about to touch down on English soil for the first time since 1969. Photo taken February 1973 using Pentax SPII.

Had the great pleasure of spending time with the countless puffins on Mykines, the westernmost of the Faroe Islands. Took too many pictures to count but these are some of my favourites. BTW I absolutely adore the F*300

No one has posted on here for a while, so I'll post some more images taken with the SP 24-48 - fast becoming my favourite hiking lens and I've tried a lot of old manual lenses now.

I've had a motorcycle trip I've been wanting to make for maybe seven years now that hasn't happened for one reason or another. Start in KS and ride through the Dakotas, curve over to Toronto and Quebec City, head out and take the ferry to Newfoundland. Then make it back to Maine and head down to NYC and then on to DC. From there a slow route back to KS. Camp as much as I can stand to and generally take my time. Probably take a month. Pack a pair of film camera bodies and a few lenses as well as my cell phone for photography. Probably do the whole thing on my Kawasaki Z900rs.

I think this pretty much uses up my three destinations in one trip. I should put this on the calendar now.

Info on film and filters from a UK supplier

I got this in an email newsletter from Speed Graphic who are a UK supplier of photo gear, film and processing kit. They called that section of the newsletter Bad News Corner for obvious reasons.

"We mentioned a July Ilford price increase (3-5% on most items) last time, and now Foma films will be going up by 10% in September. As ever, we will be buying stock forward and will hold existing prices for as long as possible. LeeFilters have abruptly announced that they will no longer be making polyester filters, and we can't get any more of the B+W Set, Soft Focus Set and IR 87C. Lastly, we heard from a reliable source that Fujifilm have already made their final roll of film. So much for being the 'last man standing' in film manufacturing! It's likely that stock in Europe and then the USA will dry up first, leaving Fuji just serving the home market. They already have Japan-only films in their catalogue."

I manipulate a photo so that it look so good but not unrealistic. People look at the prints displayed on the wall and say "wow, you are so talented, how did you do it?"
I adopt a posture of relaxed confidence yet totally humble, the smile on my face, pull out my Pentax K1 and say in with bold voice "It's not me, it's the camera" :D

I think I'm with @Wheatfield on this one.

That said I personally have several 'rules' for photographs:
- An image that is being used to depict an actual person, place or thing should be as accurate as possible and should not be altered to add / remove parts that would change a person's opinion of that person, place or thing. Adjusting exposure or color balance to be accurate is OK. I use that rule when shooting for stock images that might be included in news, magazines or books

- An image that is going to be used for stock but not depict any particular person, place or thing can be manipulated however I want as long as it accurately shows the subject or purpose of the image. This would mostly be generic stock images

- An image that is going to be in my art portfolio is just that: art. I feel free to manipulate it in any way I want and I don't really care what anyone thinks of it. It's my personal impression of whatever I am trying to say.

Some cameras do focus stacking in camera. So even this technique can be in camera.

I’m in the camp of light post processing but I occasionally go farther.

This is not a DSLR vs Mirrorless but when it comes to fast glass and longer focal length, unless your camera is 100% calibrated, it's a real frustration in working with those lenses. Originally I've started with Pentax DSLR's and stayed there for about 5 years, my keeper rate was low about 20% on a good day, Once I found out mirrorless with focus peeking, it's 85 to 90%.
Anyway, those Soviet projector lenses are beyond good on how sharp and cinematic they are, they will outperform any DSLR commercial lens even the newest one made. One thing about them, since they were meant to be used in the dark, they were coated a bit differently then camera lenses, it was more designed for color reproduction not flare resistance. With a proper hood, they are just about ideal for portrait.

Some of my current line up.

3 were modded with working aperture.

Looks like I might be shopping for the right tool to pluck the lenses out and clean this thing up (I don't imagine smacking it with a screw driver and hammer to get it loose would be advisable ;) ).

YouTube here I come!

(EDIT)
Well lookie here, PentaxForums already had it! :)

And make sure you pay attention to the orientation of elements e.g. which direction the curves face. I make a sketch as I take lenses apart. It's easy to get mixed up even though it may seem obvious at the time.
