Good job Matt. I was actually looking to take a pic like this but I had to work. Glad I got to see it and and now I have an idea on the size f lens to use.

GWAR, I will be imaging m101 pinwheel galaxy probably tomorrow if the skies are clear. If we both image the same thing, it will be a great comparison. I may be doing 10-15 min subs if it isn't too windy. Also, filters are great especially in light polluted places. I have the astronomik UHC and I like it. Keep in mind though that most narrowband filters will require to image for atleast 5X longer times.

Yes agreed. Can't see how it would be tracking because the stars are pin point towards the center. I am curious to see what the field flattener does to your scope. I have just the regular Orion 80ED and am quite pleased with it. I just went through my images and there is slight coma mostly to the top right corner of the images but they are relatively flat compared to yours. Despite that, whenever I look through the K5 viewfinder to focus, the stars all seem to have a slight tail. Don't know if it is the scope yet because the images captured look pretty decent.

Very cool gwar. I recently imaged m51 with a similar scope and camera to yours. It was windy as well so I had to throw out some shots. I will stack and post soon. Not to be picky but your stars on the outer on the image look elongated. I'm curious if I have the same .

I used it last night for the first time, not including the few test shots when I took it out the box. I am extremely pleased and I think that I have to re take my whole libary. Yup, it captures beautifully I have to agree. BTW, I didnt really noticed the knock that much either.
Thanks

Well I am on this thread for this reason too. I just took my K-5 out of the box and noticed the knocking when I rotate the camera from portrait to landscape. The knock is even heavier when I rotate it (like a car's steering wheel) 180 deg. I can hear and feel the knock and I dont like it. The first 10 images however, looked great so I assumed it is not serious but I still had to search this thread.

The knock sounds and feels like something the size and weight(density) of my FA50mm 1.4 front glass moving side to side by about 2-3mm in a solid enclosure. Yes, the knock is that heavy and it makes no difference weather the camera is on with SR or not.

For those of you without that lens, the front glass is about 48mm in dia and 15mm thick

Can anyone please confirm with me on the feel or description of the knock?

Cant wait for mine. It has a scheduled delivery of friday this week.
Even though I bought mine, I still would like pentax to get a larger part of the market by whatever means necessary. In this case, a great camera.
Whats in it for me? More third part lens makers will make more of or all their lens available in K mount. Example: Sigma stopped making the 180mm macro for pentax.

BTW, 1000X seems exaggerated. It means that if pentax sells 100 K5, Nikon would sell 100,000 D7000?? I just donno.

K5 DNG versus HDR

Thanks for the explanation guys. The word compression threw me off because I have been compressing a lot of CD's into MP3's recently. I understand the analogy now, it is the compression of amplitude, the lowest db to the highest db.

Interesting but I'm afraid I'm not sure I understand. Is the resolution compressed or the DR or the color dept?
About the speakers analogy, uncompressed audio signals, sounds better through them. The more they are compressed, the worse they sound. They must be converted to analog however to be heard through the speakers.

BTW, both pictures look really good. Although HDR's in general looks surreal, I think that it is mostly because we are not used to seeing that range of colors and range on a monitor.

I have't seen the K-5 in stock there for over a week. Probably my luck.
Well, I tried the coupon code on the K-5 combo with the lens because I cant find the option to add the out of stock K-5 body to a cart, instead there is an auto notify icon. With the lens combo, I got the message:"Sorry, the promo code EMCZZYS22 you've entered is invalid." :(

Any suggestions?

Edit: I had just gotten up and missed the date on the thread. I am an embarassed idiot

Hi John,
For the tutorial on the high iso work, for pp do you use ACR or LR3? On average, would just one have as good a results?

Have considered it and also considered the K-R but even with a rebate on the K5, I am already taking a financial hit. Fast food has gone up! ;)

I really dont want to sound like a complainer. And I am sure there are reasons for the K5's price point, its just that its out of my reach for now.

Thank you for the comparison shots and good to know that the K5 does a little better here. If you get around to any night sky with building shots and you are up for it, I'll be cool with that too.:D

I'll post a couple I took on my K20D next.

Because it is percieved by many as the camera we have been waiting on for obvious reasons, I dont expect huge price drop as quickly as my K20D and the K200D in your example did. Look at the K-x's depreciation compared to the K-7's.

I haven't validated this, but the K-x was thought to be a breakthrough in performance for its class for the company and the price is still close to the street price it had when it was realeased.
