Theory on DA 35mm ltd 'greatest lens ever' (?) tag

Nowadays the 35mm Limited spends most of its time as my film scanning lens, I must admit.
But when I take it outside, it performs very well.

I'll add my vote to Darktable or Rawtherapee as well.

I've been using Darktable for everything from editing normal RAW files to converting digital negative scans done by camera and always found it easy to use, once you find the module you're looking for.

I've done a few test shots by simply holding the lens in the one hand and the camera in the other. The images came out very soft, any highlights create strong glowy flaring, and as a result it takes the description of "dreamy" to a whole other level :D
Adding a long black cardboard lens hood didn't improve the image much, but I never expected this lens to have good optical performance.

Maybe not a beautiful image or lens, but certainly one for my fetish of fast lenses - today I received this glass gem in the mail, a Zeiss R-Biotar 50/0.77, I hope I'll be able to adapt it to my Fuji X-E2, flange distance is extremely short and only allows focus at ~20cm distance.
It's certainly giving me Canon 7/50mm 0.95 vibes :D

I got this little gem after an impulse eBay purchase recently....and I'm very happy so far.
I use it as a walk around lens, 50mm equivalent on my K-3 ii, with the benefit of going as close as I want to any subject :)

It's my first Limited series lens, though I own a range of vintage lenses, so I'm used to good build quality ;)
The only drawback of the 35 Ltd. I've discovered so far is that distant out of focus objects look not as pleasing as near ones, I guess that's excusable for what is technically a macro lens.

Just be patient, I'm sure you'll find something in a similar price range in time :)
And keep in mind that you can also look out for a 18-55mm WR.

Thank you for the effort, that's extremely interesting!
And actually more radioactive than I expected, I thought a few centimetres of air (or any thickness of metal) would be enough to block the radiation, but I stand corrected....probably won't store it on a shelf right next to my head then ;)

I would be curious about your 55/1.8 results as well since I own one, and it's also a bit tinted.

You could try finding a collapsible DA 18-50mm, I got one recently on eBay for 45$ to have at least one WR lens. K10D is the first Pentax body that can use DC lenses as far as I know.

I know, I'm probably in more danger from radioactivity from eating bananas ;)
I just find it a nice curiosity, and hey, built-in yellow filter for B/W photography.

It's been the first time I took out mine. A bit soft wide open as expected from such a fast vintage lens, but at 2.8 or 4.0 it's already very good.

Hardest question of them all: What camera to buy?

I very much second this!
I started with photography this February, got a K10D with the 18-55mm kit as my very first camera, and quickly learned to love it. For 90€ I was able to delve into a new hobby.
In summer I added a K-3 ii because I wanted to do more birding and a bit of astrophotography on the side, otherwise the K10D still would be sufficient for all my photo needs.

However, since video also is an interest, I would either check if maybe a smartphone is sufficient for that purpose, most mid range phones have decent 1080/60 or even 4K/60 nowadays.
Otherwise, I'd suggest something from the M4/3 system to an ambitious newcomer on a budget. Maybe a used Panasonic G80/85? It also has IBIS so any vintage glass will be stabilized.

Seeing all those great images taken with the DA* 300 really makes me want to get one as well 😄 though I would have to think long and hard about whether I'd trade one for my Tamron 400/4.
Speaking of....I visited the Wildpark Eekholt again

There was a bird show, managed to catch it in flight a few times.

And I visited my father in Mannheim, where there is a wild parrot population squawking around. This one was helping himself to the seeds of a tree.

Also managed to catch this red squirrel darting around the trees.

All images uncropped and handheld :)

Said and done. I was in Eekholt today again. Weather was bad, cold and intermittent rain, so we basically had the park to ourselves. And I used a raincover from my backpack as impromptu tele lens cover for my Tamron 400/4 :)

There was a falconer show today, and I even managed to catch the bird in flight a few times with the manual focus lens.

Wildcat still watching something very intently.

We went earlier today, so more light when we arrived at the owls, and cleaner images as a result :)

And this bird just had the most gorgeous coppery feather tone I've ever seen.

Thank you very much, that's exactly what I was looking for!
I would only use it for the lens - something to keep it in, where I can grab it in seconds if I see a bird, so that I don't have to carry it by hand all the time and tire myself out.

Thank you. I was hoping to find something for 50€, basically I'm just looking for a bag with straps, but I may have to bite the bullet eventually if I can't find a fitting bag that's available here.

I hope to use mine for years to come as well :)
I got extremely lucky and found it at a justice department auction, mere days after hearing about it, and getting a K-3 ii on my birthday.
It's so rare that I've never seen it for sale anywhere since.
I'm using it with the Tamron 1.4x TC that came with it, and a Pentax-A adapter with aperture control. There's no image degradation that I can see with that TC.
Eventually I may get a Pentax F 1.7x AF teleconverter to "add" a bit of autofocus capability, I have many manual lenses.

I don't know if my Pentacon 300/4 with M42 adapter would stay attached to a macro tube if you swung it, but if it did, it certainly would be a weapon of mass destruction.

We shall see - but it seems like I'll have the chance to go there a few times a year 🙂
It's just not accessible with public transport, and I don't have a car, so I'll have to take the trip with a friend.

Sadly I could not find either of those bags here. So far I've looked at AliExpress, they have cheap and decent-looking lens quivers, but nothing that's large enough.

With the Tamron 400/4 not just length, but also diameter - I was very lucky to find a 112mm (!) filter thread screw-on lens cap online for only 10€ shipped.
Dimensions are roughly 30cm X 14cm with cap in storage position and teleconverter and connector removed. For now I'll probably end up using a larger camera bag to carry it around horizontally, almost as good.
It definitely is the magnum opus of my collection, I consider myself very fortunate for being able to get it at a relatively low price.

I've actually seen one photographer with a huge lens, entirely wrapped in camo tape (the lens, not the man). Maybe he was the survivor of one such battle.
But clearly he has bad taste - he used a Canon :p his own loss if he can't fend off the prowling wildcats on his way back to civilization with a sturdy Pentax.

This Sunday, I visited the Eekholt wild park for the first time with a friend - of course I brought my camera and long lenses with me :p

The first enclosure held a pair of foxes, and gave me some beautiful photos. Tamron 400mm, wide open at F/4, I'm very happy with the lack of CA's, after the recent comparison I did I expected worse.

For the first time I felt like 400mm actually was too long. Going to a wild park, it almost is like cheating, with how docile the animals are.

The elks and deers had some very nice, wide-open grass and forest ranges.
Taken with the Tamron 500/8 mirror lens.

This one might've been photographed through a net, but the very wide aperture made the strands "disappear" like magic :)

Overall I'm very happy with the images. All are uncropped and were taken handheld, at 1/180 or 1/250, the 400/4 wide open or closed down by 1 F-stop, and I was able to keep it at ISO 3200 or below for most of the day.

After 30 minutes I switched to the mirror lens because the huge glass and metal baton became tiring on the hands, I didn't dare let go and leave the camera with all that weight dangling from the strap. I really do need a carrying case for it, but couldn't find a lens quiver large enough so far :D

On a side note, I replaced my aging smartphone with a P40 Pro since, used, they are cheap as borscht for what they're offering, and am very impressed by the image quality and the 5x (135mm eq.) optical zoom. The ludicrous 7680fps slow motion also is handy for checking shutter speeds of analogue cameras.

He wouldn't even have to go that far, I've had great experiences with a 8$ adapter, it's even machined out of brass, hard-coated, and has worked great so far with M42 lenses.

Allow me to chime in as a user who's gotten into DSLR photography with a Pentax this year and also was looking for cheap but good tele options.

The cheapest glass would be vintage and manual, I've had good experiences with older 200mm and 300mm lenses that still held up well to more modern ones when stopped down by one or two stops.
Right now my setup for birding consists of a Tamron 400/4 with 1.4x TC, which I got for 450€, though I have to admit that's a rare find, and a Tamron 500/8 mirror lens which impressed me with its image quality, but needs Live View for accurate focus. A definite upside is that it can be found for 100€ or less if you are patient.

Both are Adaptall-2, and with a Pentax K/A adapter you can use the 400/4 (or any other Tamron A-2 with an aperture) in aperture or shutter priority. With both lenses I can get sharp images handheld at 1/250s reliably.

A budget option with autofocus would be a Tamron or Sigma 70-300mm zoom. I have a very old Sigma 70-300, not even DG era, that has worse image quality than my primes, but I would still consider okay for someone just starting out, and you can get one for less than 100€ when buying used; having the 1:2 macro at 300mm can also be handy for shy insects, making the zoom even more versatile.

They feel okay, a bit rough, but so far I haven't had trouble separating them. I thought about applying a bit of Ballistol to the thread, that usually improves things.

I'm thinking about selling the Rubinar and keeping the Tamron, not because there's anything wrong with it, but because the contrast of the Tamron is just a tiny bit better - and I already have the adapter and 1.4x TC for the Tamron 😄
