Lightroom 5.6 released

The best price for a full license version of Lightroom 5.6 (not student version, not upgrade version) I found was at canadasoftwareoutlet.ca:
Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5 -Full Version- Download.
With their "cso14" 4% off coupon code, the final price is C$87.36 or US$80.3. Almost the same as upgrade price.

This place is legit and a Adobe certified reseller; you can find them at Adobe partner finder page: http://adobedealreg.force.com/PartnerSearch?lang=en#.

I have bought from them before. Just check your spam folder for the license key email as it ended up there for my gmail account.

What do you think of Sony's new a7 and a7r?

If you have a bunch of legacy glasses, then you can use them at the focal length as they are designed, rather than with a crop factor.
This alone would make it attractive. And of course, low light performance would benefit.

Making the jump from APS-C to medium format is a big change - but I don't think it is worth going from APS-C to FX format - and switching to a different mount in the process is the best way to go about it.

And the PRICE is a BIG change from APS-C to Medium format too!
OTOH, both A7 and A7r's price is within reach for most people, and that's a huge factor.

First, Pentax FF is still vaporware.
Even if it is true, who knows when it will come out. The rumor has it sometime next year - but as with any project, it can slip and may not come out until 2015 or later (see Watch Dog). Or it can even be cancelled (say like redesign to be a mirrorless)

And when it comes out, I bet that it is going to be quite a bit more expensive than A7, more like in the $2000 range.

Native Pentax camera may work better with Pentax lenses, but Sony would open up your options of using Canon and Nikon or whatever lens you may want.

The SLR look is intentional.
As Sony has found out from the NEX line, there is a group of people who are turned off by the fact that NEX looks like a big compact rather than a DSLR alternative. And that's why they have the A3000 - a mirrorless in a DSLR skin. Some customers, for one reason or another, wants their camera to look like a "real camera" (DSLR) when they are paying so much more than a compact.

So Sony is taking a less risky approach here, so that it can appeal to both the mirrorless crowd and also those who wants a DSLR-like camera.

I like it. Apart from pay once, use in multiple cameras, the Apps are also being updated.
And when new Apps come out, you camera would also gain new additional features.

He may be referring to an external battery charger.

It comes with a USB Charger to charge the battery in-camera. External battery charger is optional.

Those are Apps you can purchase.
And if you have bought it for your current NEX camera, you can use it for the new camera too, and no need to buy again. (Up to 10 Sony cameras).

In NEX-6, you have Quick-Navi - basically you can set almost everything from one screen. I hardly need to go to menu at all.

But A7 is likely going to use the RX menu which is very different from NEX. Hope they retain the Quick-Navi feature though.

You can change all the settings right from this screen.

Missed opportunity to do what?

AW1 is at best a niche product. At least, its 1 system was selling well.

Pentax has the Q, which itself is already a niche product, and we are already complaining about its price.
So you want a niche model of a niche product selling at an even higher price?

I don't think so.

But if you are concerned, you may wait until it is officially available in your area.

Other brand mirrorless not selling

It is just one country, but it is the most important market for most Japanese manufacturers as it is their domestic market. And that single market has major influence as far as camera models release and marketing direction is concerned.
The camera sales in Japan is also high in proportion to its population.
And one other reason why Japan is cited frequently in camera sales discussion as it has the most accessible camera sales and market share data. I would love to have US or European camera sales or market share data as examples too, but those data are hard to come by, and cost major $$$$ if you want camera models break down.

QuoteQuote:

Let me also mention I traveled to the areas of SW Japan, South Korea, and also Hong Kong in 2012. Sorry, but most every camera I saw in Japan was (no joke) a fullframe digital - and to add to it some truly incredible optics on the front end. One also tends to forget - that throughout most of Asia that the general population tends to have a lot more discretionary income.

Everyone can their own observation, but that really does not mean anything. The hard data is what tells the overall picture.

Does not work in cameras. Many of DSLRs or mirrorless buyers do not use anything other than the bundled kit lens, and many would not buy more than one lens; unlike video game consoles where they can count on average users buying at least 5 or more games. In addition, unlike video games where one must pay the licensing rights to release games for their consoles, any 3rd party can releases lenses with zero profit going to Pentax.

At any rate, the K-01 seems to be a one off, with no current plans for follow up or replacement model.

BCN Mirrorless camera sales ranking for 2012

Yes, this is for Japan only. And the sales data is from Jan 1 to Dec 24 2012.
For up to date sales figure, they also have weekly and monthly sales chart, but those only have ranking and there is no market share percentage.
Only the yearly or quarterly summary gives you the exact market share percentage for a specific model.

I don't agree with your assessment at all.
Admittedly, mirrorless uptake is the lowest in US. Elsewhere in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the market share of mirrorless is around 50%; in Europe, it is around 25 To 30%.

And Nikon 1 is selling like hot cakes. Nikon 1 J1 was the #1 top selling mirrorless in Japan for the year 2012.
Canon EOS M gathered 2+% market share in Japan within the 2 to 3 months that it has been on sale, and it's destined to be one of the top selling models in 2013.

Sony sells well in certain countries, but it is only #3 in Japan for mirrorless.

Nikon and Canon can sell cameras by just slapping their logo onto anything. Not a dent? It was actually a quite a big dent in the mirrorless market.

And unfortunately for Pentax, K-01 is not selling at all. The general consumers are not buying it.
K-01 came in at #20 in Japan (2012) at 1.3% market share (almost dead last among mirrorless models). Even Pentax Q outsells it 4:1 at 5.8% market share.

And why would Panasonic discontinue its mirrorless? Is there a rumor somewhere?
I just can't see why they would do that when their cameras are selling very well.

BCN Mirrorless camera sales ranking for 2012

Pentax Q only started to climb up the sales chart after its price drop to around $300. It really did not sell well at its original price.

To be honest, I think Pentax has little to celebrate in mirrorless market. It could not get over 10% market share with only 4 competitors before Canon came along. Now that the EOS-M is released, Pentax would probably continue to stay at the bottom with its current line up.

In terms of manufacturers, this is the ranking for 2012 mirrorless market in Japan:

1 - Olympus 29.8%
2 - Panasonic 23.6%
3 - Sony 20%
4 - Nikon 14.3%
5 - Pentax 9.4%

But that's the thing - forum users may laugh, but customers out there are embracing this system, and Nikon is laughing all the way to the bank.
What is the point? To sell more cameras. Nikon One is already one of the top selling mirrorless camera system. As a Nikon camera, it does not need to be smaller or better - it would simply sell. Nikon One is a perfect example of this.

And I believe EOS M would also be a sales success just because it is a Canon, regardless of how slow or pathetic its AF is.

Because for the month of September, the K-01 ranked outside the top 150 - #152, #157 & #164.
And you can see why K-01 is a one off model

Ranking within the top 50 with a high profit margin camera is completely different to a ranked out-of-top-150 low profit margin camera.

I have been tracking BCNRanking for Japanese sales for many years.
I can still remember the heyday of K10D/K100D when Pentax was a solid #3. Then it went through a low period of K20D/K200D, but follow ups like K-m, K-x were hits. There was frequently a Pentax model in the top 10 or close to top 10 in the weekly/monthly sales chart; and you could count on the yearly sales chart having at least one Pentax in the top 10.

But things are not pretty this year.
In the month of September, there were no Pentax model in the top 20; actually not even in the top 30.
The top selling Pentax was Q, would you believe it?..... at #39.

The top selling K-30 configuration was at #74, and this is frankly shocking for a model which was released in Japan just 3 months prior in June.
This is a position I would expect for a going-to-be-discontinued 2 year old camera, not a brand new 3 months old model!
And GXR is selling better than K-5; while both were outside the top 100.

And the Amazon best seller list, admittedly not the most accurate chart, do give us an indication that the dire situation is not limited to Japan.

So yeah, this is the lowest point in terms of sales since the release of K100D 6 years ago.

But that's the problem. K-30 is a very good camera on paper, but it is not capturing the imagination of the public. Not sure what the main reason is, but it is not selling in Japan.
As you know from the interview, the domestic market is the most important market for Pentax.

Pentax really need a good selling model to get out of the current slump.
And after Photokina, I just can't see how things can turn around any time soon, hence my disappointments.

As a Pentax user myself, I wish you were right. I really do.
But we should also be aware of the reality facing Pentax right now. You may call it a "sad sack post", but I call it a reality check.
The sales figures are real.

Let's put it this way. Things cannot continue at current state. Pentax is a distant #6 at this point, they have very little presence in both the DSLR and the mirrorless market segments in terms of sales.
They really need a turn around, as Ricoh is running a business too. At this point, I can't see where this would come from; and I honestly can't be optimistic until I see the light.

If you like Pentax gear, then by all means, get the K-30; as you should enjoy the camera while taking pictures.

OTOH, if longevity is your prime concern, I would have some reservation.
Pentax is currently at its lowest point in terms of sales since the release of K DSLRs. After the disappointments of Photokina, and the fact that it has been changed hands twice, you've got to wonder how much patience Ricoh has with Pentax.

Having said that, if current Pentax cameras and lenses satisfy your needs, they should provide you with many years of use, regardless of what would happen to Pentax as a company.

What is your budget?
Are you looking for a compact point & shoot camera?
... or a camera which can use the lenses you have for your K1000?
Coming from K1000, would you accept a camera with just the LCD screen without a viewfinder, or is a viewfinder mandatory for you?
