I have this lovely lens that I mainly use on my M42 cameras, but the lens hoods that I have tried vignette, even though they are advertised as wide angle. The glass is so vulnerable with the bulbous element just begging for a scratch. I'm kind of reluctant to use it as much as I'd like. Any recommendations to
a) protect the glass
b) prevent flairs

I have an SPII in fine working condition, working meter, etc except that the bulb mode fires a very fast shutter, similar to 1/1000 in sound. I know that I can get it fixed with a CLA, but is this a simple thing to adjust on my own, or is that a very bad idea?

You're right, it is missing that back piece of plastic. Since I rarely need to use a hot shoe, and have other cameras I can use if I need one, could I just remove this and cover the holes where the hot shoe was?
Edit to add: I was able to tighten down the screws and take out the wiggle. Would it cause problems to use it like this, missing the back piece?

I have a loose hot shoe on my Spotmatic SPII. Do I need to remove the top to tighten this? I found a youtube video showing this for a Spotmatic. Is the SPII roughly the same?

I appreciate the comments on the PZ-1, but I'm not really looking for a better auto-focus camera. I already have two SPIIs, an MX, a Yashica TL Super, an Iskra and an Autocord, all of which I prefer to this camera, and I really don't need any more cameras. I don't think it makes sense to have camera gear that doesn't get used regularly, and this has been sitting unused for a year. I was given this camera with a couple of nice lenses. I think I will sell it after I redo the light seals, but I wanted to run a roll of film through it first to test the meter, shutter speeds, etc so I can indicate to any potential buyer that it was film tested.

My cassette is from Acros 100 and does have DX code on it. And I also read that there is no way to manually set the ASA. So I guess my options are to shoot the whole roll in manual mode, or shoot at EI100, and since I would like to test the meter, so this is probably the best route, even though I typically use my Pentax Spotmeter V.

Hey there Pentaxians. I was recently given an SF10 camera. I want to run a test roll with my 18-frame bulk loaded Fomapan 400 on a reused Acros 100 II canister. Will the auto film loader work with a DIY film leader? I'm familiar with the MX and Spotmatic II where you just manually rewind when you get resistance at the end of the roll, and I'm not sure I understand how this works. Do I just hit the rewind button after 18 frames? If it gets to the end of the roll before I hit the rewind button, will I lose the roll or damage the camera?

Any suggestions for a good cla source? I'm located in Madison, WI, for what it is worth, but would prefer to send it to someone who knows what they are doing. I also have a Jupiter 11A that could benefit from a relube and focus adjustment.

I somehow managed to get some dirt inside the helicoid of my 100mm Macro-Takumar. I can feel it grind a little when I rotate the helicoid. Is there an easy way for me to clean this, or am I going to have to send it for a CLA? I do have lens spanner, tiny screwdrivers, etc and a DIY willingness, and have taken apart some lens elements for cleaning, but this is one of my favorite lenses and I absolutely do not want to risk ruining this lens.

Is this something you would expect a CLA to find and fix or something that wouldn't normally be covered?

On the SP2 roll, the two blank frames were shot at 1/1000, but I had two other frames also shot at 1/1000 that were exposed and developed ok. I didn't have any shots on the MX roll that were 1/1000. I was shooting many of these with the flick MLU trick plus timer. Is there any reason that would cause shutter issues?

Recently got my MX and SP2 back from CLA with Eric. Took two test rolls, one comparing my 135mm lenses on the SP2, and the other on the MX comparing my Tak 200/3.5 with my Enna Munchen 85-250 trying to take the same shot back to back on a tripod as much as possible. I exposed them both at 800 EI, developed in XTOL 1:2 for 27 min with 10 seconds of agitation every 3 min. On both rolls frames 6 and 7 are blank. On the SP2 roll, that seems to be the only issue. On the MX roll, frames 19 and 20 are also blank and 6 frames blank on the right 1/3 with the left side exposed and developed alright.
I just started film photography about 4 months ago, so this could be 100% operator error.
What could be the cause of these issues?

I actually was looking at those. How do those attach? The more traditional cases had a round knob at the bottom that screwed into the tripod attachment point, but I don't see that on the MX half cases.

I am waiting to see the results from the first roll that I shot on each of them. At age 60, my eyesight isn't as good as it once was, and it seems to me that the ability to nail the focus will be one of my biggest challenges. I would say that the split prism of the MX seems to be far easier for me to dial in the focus quickly, but I guess the proof will be in the results I get back.
Several other things that have me leaning towards the MX: 1) I usually get up before dawn to walk my lab and to take photos in the light of dawn, and the meter on the MX is supposed to be an improvement over the Spotmatic meter in low light. 2) I like the shutter lock on the MX, and 3) Hiking around for an hour or two, I like to have a camera on my wrist strap. If it is a beast, I get a bit fatigued after a while, so I like the smaller size of the MX. I have large hands and if that wasn't a consideration, I'd probably prefer the ergonomics of the Spotmatic. I can see having the MX as my fast film, morning hike camera, and the Spotmatic as my slower film camera. So I see myself using both. ---------- Post added 07-27-21 at 07:03 PM ----------
While that is true, there's a lot more info available on a modern mirrorless camera. If shooting wide open, I have a pretty good idea what the out of focus bokeh looks like on mirrorless liveview. I'm not sure how to get that info on my film cameras--it just looks like a blur, so I'm guessing based on the little I know about lens characteristics, focal length, distance to subject, and distance to background. And the liveview gives me a pretty good idea whether there are any blown highlights or crushed shadows, plus I have even more lighting info if I check histograms. I just have to trust the meter on a film camera, or use my iphone to take a light reading. And I have rule of thirds lines showing on my mirrorless viewfinder, but I just have to guess where that is on the film camera.
I hope that shooting adapted M42 lenses on my modern camera will make me a better M42 film photographer, and shooting film will make me a better digital photograper.

I just started shooting on a digital camera this year, and recently acquired a Spotmatic and an MX. Just finished shooting a roll on the MX, and currently shooting a roll on the Spotmatic. No idea if the light seals are good, or if there are any other problems. Will probably send both in for a CLA after I check out the first roll of film. It is so different framing and getting the shot on a film camera, I feel as though I am flying blind at this point on the film cameras.

Personally, I think that camera companies would be wise to go completely contrarian and embrace analog. There's a backlash against the digital media age, driven to a significant extent by young people who weren't there to experience LP records and analog film photography. Look at the popularity of vintage lenses used on modern mirrorless cameras. The vintage lens on modern camera could be seen as a gateway drug for people who enjoy the manual experience and the look they create, rather than chasing sharpness and megapixels. Youtube has a ton of instructional videos on how to use analog film cameras. Who are the consumers of these videos? Film companies have recently brought back filmstock they once dropped. Phone cameras are chasing this, too, with apps that film photography, but it lacks authenticity compared with the real thing. Is there not a way for camera companies to tap into this?

That looks like a nice option. What is the width of the collar?
