Here are 3 from the South Jersey shore right around the end of June. It would have been a perfect day to shoot some color but i left it at home by mistake.

Pentax 67, 105 2.4 (and i think that third frame is a 55mm). TMAX 100 developed in HC110(b).

sweet! i have the giant pentax handle, it came along with my camera when a got it a while ago. It definitely helps when you're carrying the camera but i find it pretty awkward to hold while shooting pictures and it kind of guarantees that the camera isn't going to fit in most bags. It's great that you can use a strap along with it too though.

The images i shot today are razer sharp. When i saw them fresh out of the rinse i was really glad i'd returned the other lens (as i'd considered keeping it)

I've got this whole thing sorted out and figured i'd close this thread out.

The seller took back the lens (and refunded shipping both ways), i was a bit nervous about this but they did the right thing given the situation, so i'm satisfied. I took a bet on another lens from a different seller, it actually arrived just a couple of days before my return was processed so for a few days there i technically owned 2 of them.

This new one has no such hidden issues - at least that i've been able to find. This morning i had a chance to run a roll of film past it and i can definitely see the appeal. I think the first one i had had been knocked out of whack with that barrel hit. I had put a roll through it but the images lacked the sharpness that i'm seeing out of this copy. I posted a couple of images in the Post Your Photos thread

I took my "new" 105 on a short shakedown hike this morning to run a roll of film through it - and I had 30 minutes at lunchtime to run the film. I'd purchased a different copy of this lens and once it arrived i noticed it had received a pretty good knock on the front deforming the filter ring to the point of it being unusable. I shot a roll with that lens prior to returning it as it was clearly not in Mint Like New condition and wasn't overwhelmed by the results.

This new copy that i have now has no such issues. I can see that there's something special about these lenses. I think the first one i had had been knocked out of alignment as the images were not nearly as crisp as what i see on this roll i shot this morning.

This is his email - he has it in his profile on insta i think too - myoatmail@gmail.com (i had just emailed him directly).

He has different woods available, rosewood and walnut were the 2 he offered (this one's walnut), i think he's got others too. It's not cheap and i think he charges more for some of the other woods.

I just receive this right-side grip from the snapu (on instgram). It's a great fit and really nice.

I'm not sure about going without a strap yet but i'll take it out this weekend and see how i fare. I'm trying to figure out a properly sized strap for this camera too as the Domke ones i usually use aren't great for the camera strap lugs or the weight. and the side attach strap seems weird, although i've been trying it out.

For this grip i emailed him about a week into april, he made it and sent it out about 3 days later and it arrived today after about 2.5 weeks. I'm in the CONUS.

+1 to that, shoot some pictures with it.

Make sure you try as many different shutter speeds as you can, maybe vary slow and fast between frames. You're going to want to check frame spacing and the number of frames once you have the developed film in hand.

If your body has the MLU function make sure that that works too.

Here's a response to a question on the condition of a lens i was interested in:

:D

QuoteQuote:

There are a few dust in the lens, but no fungus.
However, I just checked the condition with normal light, but very strong light like LED light.
It may have very thin fungus if you see it with strong light.

Check out Pliobond - it’s a common adhesive for camera coverings. Google around a bit for it too

I've generally found the same thing, the sellers are quite honest. the use of the same template and very similar and high quality images always makes me think there's some clearing house for this stuff and individual sellers end up being responsible for chunks of it. It's always seems odd that the listings are so similar.

I've only gotten high quality stuff, and kind of amazingly quick shipping. This most recent time i had a problem with the lens and the seller has been super quick to acknowledge it and offer a return.

Apologies if this isn't the right forum for this, i've been looking for a couple of Pentax 67 lenses on eBay recently just due to the fact that they don't seem to be available anywhere else. Over the last few years i've purchased gear from other manufacturers on there too and have noticed the same confusing trend.

I see people talk regularly about the descriptions being overly generous with regard to the condition (eg: eBay Like New Mint ++++ is equivalent to KEH Bargain condition (this is only a slight exaggeration))

The thing that i find perplexing though is the sales formats. There are a bunch of sellers of Pentax (and Nikon and i'm sure others) gear in Japan, many of them have very similar pictures of what they're selling, they seem to use the same condition template, highlighting different attributes. And while there are exceptions to this many sellers have about the same number of feedback points etc.

I'm very careful when i evaluate these things but there's only so much you can see in the images, and in what questions you ask before completing a purchase. I've yet to get burned, but i've had to discover things after the fact and return and/or deal with it.

I assume i'm not alone here, does anyone have any tricks or hints for shopping on this stuff?

Addressing a Bent Filter Thread (Pentax 105mm 2.4 SMC)

It seems like it's from the impact. but at the same time it's weird that the 2 dents are almost exactly 180 degrees apart from one another.

With this other bend i found there enough force to deform a full inch + of that heavy aluminum (i assume that's what it is) and to mar the finish due to the amount of flex.

It's a shame, the lens overall still appears to be in great shape, that one event pretty much buggered it though.

I spent some time last night examining this lens some more and found evidence of other damage. Using a powerful flashlight to look around at it showed me that there was another big dent in the filter ring 180 degrees opposite the first mark. It's basically invisible in regular light but the reflection changes with the flashlight showing the bend.

then looking in towards the threaded section carefully you could see what looks like either the finish being damaged by the bend, or the marks from one of those filter thread repair tools.

So i'm going to walk away from this lens, i contacted the seller with what i found, he's apologetic and is going to accept the return.

I wouldn't have noticed this, and probably wouldn't care so much if the filter ring worked properly - although finding this larger damaged area would have caused me to rethink it a bit.

On my particular lens it's a small but distinct mark, it must have hit a small solid piece, i'm thinking like a wrought iron fence spike or something similar. It got it pretty much straight on too.

With the small amount that the metal is deformed it got *just* enough of a hit to change the pitch of those threads. total bummer.

I'm going to try to work something out with the seller as otherwise the lens is great. It looks great through the viewfinder but i'm going to run a roll of film through it in the next couple of days before making a final decision.

I've seen those before. I was out looking around for one and came across what might be a couple of options - if anyone has used one successfully i'd love to hear about it.

This particular one is sold under a bunch of different names from a bunch of different places. It looks like it's made of aluminum stock and on a burly lens like one of these pentax lenses from the 70s it seems like the lens might out muscle the vice tool. I'm sure it would work well enough the first time.

There's this other one i found that's probably not steel but is maybe zinc - it seems more robust anyway. It also costs more and claims to cover a small diameter range of lenses.

I just received a 105 2.4 i bought on eBay. It had all of the superfluous descriptors of being mint ++++++ and all that - which seems to be getting out of hand lately on these photo auctions.

Overall this lens is in great shape - except...

  • There's a small mark on the front ring

  • That small mark is actually a small dent

  • The small dent makes it nearly impossible to put a filter on it, or otherwise use the front ring.

I contacted the seller about it but i'm wondering if this is a easily fixable issue or if i'm asking for trouble with it. Basically i'm looking to keep the lens and want to get it fixed.

I've bought and sold a ton of camera gear on ebay over the years and have been through this sort of thing a number of times, but this is my first nearly invisible bent filter ring on an otherwise flawless lens.

Pentax 67 Waist Level Finders

cool, that you both, that's helpful.

The older hasselblad ones i find a bit fiddly, sort of like the older Rollei waist level finders, rollei seemed to merge with hasselblad's design somewhat by the time they got to the 2.8f cameras.

I'm interested in picking up one of these for my Pentax. I have a "67" version but it's good to know there's no functional difference between them all.

Pentax 67 Waist Level Finders

It looks like over the years Pentax updated the waist level finders for each generation of the 67 bodies. I'm wondering if the changes are purely aesthetic (eg: Asahi Pentax (6x7) vs. Pentax (67) vs. PENTAX (67ii)) or if there are actual functional differences between them.

i've used Hasselblads for a while and over the years the WLFs changes in functional ways - i much prefer the more modern ones from the 70s/80s over the early ones. I'm wondering if it's the same for the Pentax 67 WLFs?

Or are they all the same just with different fonts and branding on the nameplate?

Wrt the Hasselblad ones the material differences being:
  • The way they collapse and fold up (pinch rather than fold 3 pieces in order)

  • The way you flip the magnifier up (small metal tab vs plastic slide)

  • The way you pop the WLF up (plastic tab vs. pinch the edges)

  • Replaceable diopters (i don't use them but the option is nice i guess)

Edit: When browsing images they all look the same, but i thought the Hasselblad ones all worked the same until i got a couple of them and figured it out.

pentax 67 lens auto mode
Posted By jchabalk

Auto just means that the lens stops down to your selected aperture when the shutter is fired - which is probably what you're used to. Manual on these lenses is the same as DoF preview on other camera systems - when you change aperture it changes what you see in the viewfinder (increased depth of field if you can notice it, and lower light levels).

You can easily play with both without having to shoot a frame, and if you take the lens off the camera there's a little lever on the rear of the lens that the camera triggers upon shooting the frame that stops the lens down to the set aperture, you can wiggle the lever and see what happens to the lens aperture

Either way you have this set shouldn't affect the final image.
