So KEH weighed in at $350 if my camera can be repaired. Parts are limited or unavailable, so would be good used parts, but these can be hit or miss, they said. I love the camera, but I can't see spending money on an uncertain repair. May just be too disheartened right now.
Think I'm going to put off the decision until black Friday or see how well I can carry on with the camera if the screen fails.

Unfortunately I have to "me too" on this thread. It sounds like I have the exact same problem with my KP. Will email KEH on the repair. I'm hoping that the $350 starting repair rate would be less if it's just a ribbon cable. Precision Camera lists a price of $484 (they graciously include shipping in that cost ).
I've noticed once or twice that the screen has not come on when it was flush with the body, but a power cycle seemed to resolve the issue. This Sunday I noticed that the screen develops vertical bars then goes white/shuts down when it's tilted past 30 degrees. For now the screen returns once it is flush with the body again.
Honestly don't know If I would spring for even the $350 listed at KEH. I'd be more inclined to try connecting a small external LCD via HDMI to see if that would work out.

So I finally got a replacement copy of the 50mm 2.8 macro. Unfortunately the manufacturer box was shipped in a bubble wrap envelope instead of a shipping box. UPS did the thing they do with a package like this (oops!), and there were a few dings in t he Pentax box's corners. The lens seems to work fine (though the pics have a different, more technical feel - do individual lenses have a personality(?)).
Something I noticed when I mounted the lens was that there was more turn resistance when mounting on my KP than my first copy. I don't have this experience on my 18-55 or 55-300 either, the turn resistance seems very consistent. Does Pentax have a tolerance for how 'tight' the lens mount is or could this indicate some structural damage that isn't apparent to my eye?
I'm leaning towards a return/exchange, in case the lens has some hairline fracture that may have shifted the mount slightly, but wanted to check on here first.

Thanks so much for the super fast reply Adam! That all makes sense. I can at least console myself with the fact that it wasn't the camera section I had left unzipped. If the lens still functions in manual mode it won't be a total loss. For sure adding some mods to the pack to mitigate future human error. Grrr...

So I dropped my 50mm 2.8 macro :-( , and notice now that when I turn the focus ring, the barrel doesn't move evenly when I turn it. On camera, the focusing motor tends to warble a little bit, as it moves the barrel. Precision camera's site quoted $300 for repair, but that doesn't sound right, considering the price of the lens.
I haven't shot any pics with it yet after the fall. I'm assuming that with the additional force needed to turn the focusing ring that I'll use more battery power. Don't want to risk damaging the motor on my KP though (if that's a possibility).
Does anyone know if the repair estimates are accurate? Could I damage my camera if I continue using the lens as is?
(Note to self, always double check camera pack to make sure everything is zipped up, Pentax lens pouches are crap for protecting lenses)

Spotted this beasty on a morning walk through my favorite park just off of Lake Michigan. Always such diversity here.

Ha! Thanks again everyone for the warm and funny welcome! More to come from me when I can eke out a little time to post. Busy at work this past couple months and needed to unplug from the computer while I'm not in my rectangular containment unit.

I'm probably overdue to post some shots from what is becoming my new obsession. feeling drawn to more macro stuff at the moment. Still figuring out this world of DSLRs and my new KP.:D

This was actually shot at 1/100s, but it wasn't available in the drop down menu so I picked the closest one. Still getting used to this beast of a camera after using a Fuji bridge camera (on auto!) for years. Absolutely loving the journey.
