OMG I wasn't expecting that answer when I asked if anybody was home. LOL Thank you bogwalker for the honour. I've been breeding sheep for 40 years and stopped last year, because I couldn't handle the rams anymore at my age. So WOW, now it's up to me again to find a subject. I really loved yours though.
It's late now, I will cook something up tomorrow.

Freezing the flight of little birds with the SMC-K 200 f2,5

Having some time to spend, and seeing birds going from a tree branch to land at a finding station in the garden, I decided to try catching these landings.

I needed to be close enough to the bird, but the field of view has to be wide enough to catch the entire bird evolution to be sure it will be in th frame. (Bird trajectory is difficult to predict)

Some view tests told me that my K200 f2,5 (300mm on APS-C) would be ok for the shooting distance (10 feets).
The 2,5 aperture permits to shoot with minimal exposure time / not so high ISO. The manual focusing is perfect to pre-focus the target area.

The equipment: K30 + K200 f2,5 mounted on tripod with wired remote trigger. Pictures are taken through a double bend house window.

The way of doing:
K30 in AV mode, so the pictures are taken wide open with tis K lens (f2,5) - ISO 1600 -> exposure times were all between 1/5000 and 1/6000.
Focusing by advance on the feeding station area....waiting while watching directly the scene (not in the viewfinder)....depress remote control at the moment the bird leaves the branch to land at the station. (little birds are very fast and spend few tenths of second to go from the branch to the station).

I didn't use the continus shooting of the K30 thinking it would waste dozens of pictures and make less fun to do.:):)

I used a Pentax Optio P80 for this shot. After taking the image I used the in-camera filter to apply the sepia filter. Then in Lightroom I adjusted the sky for a deeper color tone and made the rest of the image monochrome. BNSF Vancouver Terminal, Vancouver, WA.

I think your analysis is right. It’s also a thing of a lot of people using Instagram for displaying photos, as long as people look at tiny instagrams they think they are great photos. I’ve tried to keep up with Instagram but it’s just to tedious and infected with people wanting to “sell” you and the “influencers”. I still think Flickr is the best site for displaying and viewing photos, but even there you have to watch for AI and other fakes. Sadly, we’ll probably see some of those in the “best of 2023”.

I forgot to say something significant I liked about my f150. It started years before I got it.

There was a young mechanic living in my neighbourhood, who was looking for side work. I commissioned him to do some work on my old ranger, and he layed in the snow changing parts, diagnosing problems and kept it running just dandy. The agreement I made was that he bill in hours, not dollars, and use the book hours as a baseline. When I payed him the (Ford) shop rate, based on the book hours, he suggested it was too much, because he was working outside. I retorted that it should cost more, since he was working outside, and that I was getting a bargain.

It's 20 years later now, and I bought the truck from the dealership he now works at. As shop foreman. When I bring in my truck for its warranty service, or even now that the extended warranty is past, I get amazingly good service that I trust as much as I've ever trusted him.

So invest in your mechanics and other tradesmen. If you can't do it, it IS worth paying smartly for.

I had a bit of a hard time choosing as I did not want to use a flower or insect shot but a more “utilitarian” shot. Therefore I ended up with this shop in Tunisia that apparently sells pipes in different sizes.

There was a rather disorganized spider web on one of my tomato plants on my back patio that was on its way out as autumn set in. After a morning rain, the drops clung to the web creating this scene.

Nice! I had one of those, from the first year it was made: 1974. I eventually sold it during the pandemic bike boom, but I still ride a different Schwinn: a blue '88 Prelude.

Ricoh GR3(x) firmware reversing / hacking effort

Hey Pentax Forums Community,
I wanted to share an exciting project I've been working on related to the Ricoh GRIII(x) camera. The goal is to find a way to run custom applications on the camera without altering its firmware, just like MagicLantern does for other models.
The camera runs a customized Poky 2.2 on Linux kernel v4.4 and has various system daemons controlling its functions, along with a few custom libraries.
I've been diving deep into this project, analyzing the firmware image, building the kernel, and creating a Docker container for easy system and application testing. Started reverse engineering the webapid, sysmgrd, camctrld, and custom libraries is also underway.
Moving forward, I'll be focusing on getting the system up and running with mocked components, exploring the firmware update process, and investigating display output. I'm also on the lookout for potential vulnerabilities in order to inject own code or gain remote shell access.

To make my work more streamlined, I've set up dedicated Docker containers for kernel building, mocks, and running the firmware image rootfs.
I wanted to share this project with you all, as your insights and contributions would be valuable.
Looking forward to your thoughts and involvement.

Here's a link to the repository: GitHub - hhornbacher/gr3x-fw-hack: Welcome to the Ricoh GR3(x) Firmware Exploration and Reverse Engineering project repository. This project aims to collect information, tools, and Docker environments to facilitate the reverse engineering process of

Cheers,
Harry

I'm still pretty happy with my gas car, and there's no way I could use an electric car, anyway. I live in an apartment with nowhere to plug in while at home, and 95% of my driving is on road trips along out-of-the-way highways where finding a gas station is hard, let alone a charging station.

I got back from another round trip to Oregon last weekend. 2,600 miles, averaging 48.3 mpg (or 4.9 l/100km) calculated from the trip meter and gas receipts, not the car's own slightly optimistic MPG reading. Pretty good for a pure ICE car, not a hybrid or even a turbo. Just a little 1,200cc engine in a lightweight, aerodynamic car. I still wish the tank were a little bigger, though. Even getting such good mileage, 9 gallons feels a little restrictive. The car goes into full panic mode if I go past 350 miles on a tank, with the gauge empty and blinking, even though there's usually more than a gallon and a half left at that point.

loooong time no post.

So my MX5 is for sale, PM me if you're in Australia and interested in buying it, I'll send you a link to the ad.

But anyway, the reason it's for sale after 14 years of ownership is because I bought something just as fun, but without any of the licence loss risk.

Since most of you are USA based, and can't legally own one of these, it's a 2016 Suzuki Alto Works.
660cc 3 cylinder Turbo, with OEM Recaro seats, and thanks to the Japanese owner my one has a few extra mods such as a 5zigen exhaust, RSR Lowered springs, and KYB SR-Special shocks to sit.
It also still has the Japanese ETC reader, which shouts at me in Japanese every morning to put my toll card in.....

what got you into your career?

Curiosity brought me to study physics, rather quickly going into 'theoretical' physics - the part that's less descriptive, but more concerned with the fundamental principles. I continued in research after my degree, but at some point got tired of working for the bookshelf, felt that I had studied major fields to a degree that I understood what the boundaries of knowledge of the world were at that point and was not looking forward to become a science nomad dragging the family along, which would have been the next science career move.

That would have been incompatible with my wife's academic career as well, so I moved into commercial software instead, rather seamlessly with the background of a lot of programming and years of sysadmin work in science. My major career jumps happened very quickly, so that I'm almost doing the same job now as 20 years ago. The excitement has worn off a bit, but I like my freedom, the ability to work on strategic long-term projects, while still being employed and not having to worry about getting enough billable hours together every month.

Moving from academia with a perfectionist professor into commercial software, I also had to lower my standards a lot. I'm still trying, even as a non-native English speaker, to maintan a decent level of attention in everyday communication.

I remember when I owned a truck, people you hardly knew, or perhaps met once, would call you out of the blue, all friendly and ask you to help them cart something.

I had two simple rules for such requests, from said "strangers":
1. I'll be pulling in at a gas station and you'll be filling it up.
2. I don't lift or carry fridges. In short, I'll transport it, but I'm not carrying it to the truck or from the truck.

Real friends, of course, got helped for free.

I've sailed a Hobie 14 (once), but never a 16. I sailed and raced A-Class catamarans (

You Tube

) for many years, so I have some experience. You can right Hobies single handed. There are probably several techniques and probably even videos about it on youtube.

Was your wife on the trapeze when you pitchpoled? That can be a bit disconcerting if you get the slingshot effect from the mast. Many years ago, when I was 18, I was racing in a 14' dinghy with a very pretty blond girl as crew. She grumbled a bit when it started raining, but there was a good breeze and we were leading the race. She complained that the rain was hurting her face, so I suggested she put the bailing bucket over her head. She was still complaining when we won the race. She wouldn't come sailing with me after that.

Love it , love it, gets miles per gallon, has a tow bar, pulls stuff, I live in a rural area where a trailer is a must, Turbo diesel 1.8, quick for a diesel. My last car was a gas guzzling Honda CRV, the Opel is a new world of motoring altogether. Big space in the back for band gear and long enough to sleep in if you have to. I'm getting 150Km and more on €20 of fuel, Camera always slung over the passenger seat, just in case...

What i don't like, the car tax, but no way i can change that.

Yes you can turn of your LCD display off but that doesn’t mean yon won’t be able to turn it on again 😀. You can press INFO button twice and then with arrow choose DISPLAY OFF and again INFO button twice and you choose STATUS SCREEN. That’s it. You can turn it on and off when you want. As for image preview you can use button for it or you can set in settings that after you took image it shows it for you for period of time or permanently or turn it off at all and manually preview with dedicated button.
