Well I took over 250 photos today. I used the P mode and the Av,Tv,Sv, manual, not once on full auto.. A lot of under exposed over exposed some real garbage and some that I think are decent for my first outing. Very Slowly starting to see how Aperture, shutter speed and ISO work together. Mostly jpegs but will start taking rows tomorrow. I found aperture priority and shutter setting more forgiving then the other modes and tried to learn off that for what I found pleasing for certain shots and existing lighting.

I will take a look tomorrow on a large screen to really see how bad they really are but also looking forward to the ones that looked good on the small camera screen.

I had a lot of fun today taking pics. Even the crappy ones.

I like the 18-135 you can really do a lot with it. The prime as I thought needs more thought and experience to get the most out of it and,I do need to zoom with my feet.

Congrats on picking up the K-5. That is a great camera from everything I have read and the pics I have seen it generate. I participate in multiple forums on various hobbies/topics. I have to say this particular group has been extremely helpful and genuinely interested in helping beginners and more advanced photographers. I try to do the same when I can topic-dependent, of course.

Just the post above from Mikesbike is extremely helpful without being over technical. Actually, I understand the Hybrid System better now from the post than just reading through the ebook. I have also come across a video series by Mike Browne ( no affiliation, etc.) that's really good at promoting the basics ( Aperture, shutter, Iso, and using the meter) and easily shows though taking pictures and going back and forth changing one variable and how it affects the others and has been a great learning aid. But until you actually have the camera, it's all theory. Now that I have a camera, I can start taking pictures.

I also like being in the "underdog" group, as one member mentioned, and not going on the "main" road with Nikon, Canon, and the lot. I do that with a lot of things I buy that I am interested in.
To me, branding becomes more important the more involved you become, and I guess you just developed preferences.
Someone who has never used a DSLR camera and is handed two similar cameras different brands probably won't really note the differences for a while. The WR rating of the K-70 at the price point to me was a must-have and really seemed to be a well-put-together package. The pictures that people take on the site are quite amazing to me. I should have brought a real camera years ago.

I can say with my very short time with the camera that I like the grip ( I did read some thinks it's too big); I ordered some extra Wasabi batteries( I will keep an eye on them, swelling, etc.) I think it has a decent balance for what it is, and I'm ready to start snapping some photos. Although engineers typically don't usually do anything without a game plan, so to speak, so hence the reading and research over the past week. My head was spinning, so it will be nice to take a break and enjoy the camera this weekend.

I enjoy conversing with people who are passionate about the topic at hand, not sugar-coating things, and constructing criticism is always helpful.
Hopefully not too far off-topic.

I appreciate all the help from the forum members who have taken an interest in my journey.
Oh, and I got a little trigger happy and bought a used mint condition SMC DA 15MM prime lens. I took one pic with it last night in the kitchen, and the colors were brilliant. I think its a winner.

That's actually an interesting concept; the very few pics I took seem over-exposed; the AWB was set at Tungsten level from what I can remember in an Exif file I saved to get shutter count and build date.
Tungsten is usually set in low light conditions, and I guess if it were set while shooting outdoors, it would be on the overexposed side, I think, which would make some sense.

Something I will investigate for fun briefly before resetting.

That book was recommended by a forum member when I first posted. The e-book is all-inclusive. Now that I have the camera and can follow along with the book I should be able to start making some headway.
I actually read through most of it once already, but until I received the camera it was all theoretical.

Hopefully, after work, if I'm not shuttling around my teenage daughters I will be able to spend some time setting the camera up, updating the firmware, and taking a few photos.
I have some accessories coming today( camera bag, spare battery, KF UV lens cover( thinking to use on the beach I know there are mixed reviews)

A lot to learn, but ready.
Cheers!

Definitively has the original version, checked. Build date of 3-23-17. Looking more in depth on the EXIF file. Searched answer for battery and found. Taking long time to charge.
Will do firmware tomorrow.
WOW on all the settings. Need sleep.
Thanks!!

I posted over in the Welcome section and received a lot of nice feedback and great advice.
Ask questions and take your time was one that stuck with me. Take you time is more difficult for me, but I'm learning.

Based on the the feedback given by some I went used. I found a nice used Kit on Ebay, seller 100% feedback out of Japan and took a chance. K-70 with Pentax 18-135 listed as mint( as new).
Received it today see pics, Pentax K-70 - Google Photos and it as it appears, it really looks brand new. Everything, not a scratch anywhere, Nada. Fired it up took pic to check shutter count and just under 4k which I think is pretty good. Based on serial number it looks like maybe mid 2017. Overall very pleased . I'm am working though confirming everything works. Did take a few quick shots and I did not see any issues with dust, fog, fungus or anything like that on the camera or lens.

My questions would be should I reset the camera back to scratch so I am working on a clean slate for making any changes? I would think yes.
Anything else I should check? I have seen a few " what to check on used camera"
When is battery fulled charged? Does green light on charger go off?

Should I reset the camera then update the firmware to latest version? That would make most sense.

Looking forward to starting the journey.

Fabulous! This lens really does it for me. When I see some negative or lackluster reviews on the lens it has to be user error or just a bad lens. I was going to wait a bit and get some time under my belt learning the craft but after seeing all the pics in this thread especially the sunrise and sunsets makes me want this leans more the ever. I face west at my house and we have some amazing sunsets set in an urban environment. This lens would really do justice to the setting.

Good idea on the challenges!

I’m not the least bit worried about the aperture block failure. Agree with you on the low failure rates I do, and it’s fixable rather cheaply actually.

The gear won’t, be here till late next week the earliest :( so I have some reading time.

I also picked up some real basic accessories, a nice multi-use bag, (needed a new one anyway) SD card, UV filter/lens protection for beach/job site and when necessary.

I also nailed down an instructor led photography class/ series to take online at local cc.
As time is a commodity in my house as most, and I have some right now I’m trying to pack in really understanding the basic concepts. I wish I had the camera to actually enforce the info. Soon enough.

Welcome, I just purchased the k70 as well and wanted to go the 20 40 route but couldn’t pass up on a used set up with an 18-135. Once I have some time under my belt I will definitely pick up a limited.

Thank you for the feedback, but as Aslyfox stated the trigger has been pulled. Many used K70’s,s are selling on eBay for the same or more then can be purchased new domestically.I don’t fully grasp that, but can only look at it from the US market. eBays not for everyone but I’m batting 1000 since 1999.

I did the homework, and based on my current photography skillset=0.0, ( can only go up:))the K-70 was the better fit all around. If I can get half the quality of some of the galleries in the pentax forums from the K-70 I will be thrilled in the short term. At double the price the KP just didn’t make sense on the value engineering side of this project. The dust removal feature of the KP seems amazing, as some other upscale features, but hard to tell looking at some of the pics side by side.

I did seriously look at the KP prior to my purchase I think you can’t go wrong with either version.

Thanks.

So I did some heavy research( past few nights)and reading and listening to forum members and I took the plunge and purchased a used K-70 with an SMC DA 18-135mm F/3.5-5.6 ED AL (IF) DC WR Lens and warranty. I have 30 days from receipt to return for whatever reason on both items. Once I get it and go through it I will post my findings.

When I started researching more in-depth on lenses, and only on research, it would seem I may be better getting the DA 20-40 limited lens once I have some time under my belt learning photography and have a better understanding of aperture, ISO, and shutter speed. All the basics. The 20-40 limited to me just has more pop than the 18-135 but the pop comes along with users who are not beginners (Generally)
Additionally, for the price I paid used, I can still buy the limited and be under on total price for a new camera and the limited lens. I'm excited and it's a win-win in my book.

Happy Friday and 4th

Thank you all for the informative replies. The information provided in this thread alone is a huge help. "Take your time and ask questions" Words of wisdom. I'm big on traveling light and not reinventing the wheel when so many have done the homework, but still, the amount of lens and info is quite voluminous. I definitely have an interest in astrophotography, especially with all the pictures shown on this website. So that should be a fun learning process as well..

I am looking forward to the journey!

Greg

Good evening to all, my first post and really new to photography. I have wanted to get a DSLR
camera for a few years and finally have some time and money to do so. After doing a good amount of research I’ve settled on the K-70, and really drawn to the colors, crispness, and overall pictures produced by the HD DA20-40 limited. It’s actually kinda strange, but it’s what my eyes tell me.

The number of lenses can be over whelming at first, but I feel this combo gives me some weather resistance for all the time I spend outdoors, a lens that covers a wide gamut of situations, while being robust and light at the same time.I’m willing to spend a little more on my first lens and be happy out of the gate.

I’m on the fence about buying excellent condition low mileage used, which would be a savings of about 18%, which could net me another cheaper lens in the future , tripod and accessories or just go new.

I am also researching some online classes which should get me up and running a little quicker. Some research here should help with this task.
I’m quite excited to make the purchase and start learning and shooting pictures all the way to the stars.

Looking forward to learning conversing with amateurs and experts alike on the forum.
Cheers!
