Poll: It's a total eclipse, but is it art? Best of Pentax Forums Feb. 21 poll

So, my son and I took a road trip in 2017 to see that one, we picked a spot in Tennessee. Drove from Massachusetts.
It was a 2500+ mile road trip. We stopped in PA and visited my parents and my brother/his family along the way. Drove through Shenandoah National Park. Stopped at this cool underground cave/lake.
Then saw the Eclipse and went home.
We happened to have clear skies. It was amazing. The only problem we had traffic wise was on the way home.
This time it's a 140 mile drive up into Northern VT from where I live. There is zero chance I'm going to miss the opportunity to see it again.
I"m in a local astronomy club (mostly for learning more astrophotography tricks) and of the group - three have seen totality.
If the ones who haven't there is a general "I probably won't travel to see it." vibe.
Those of us who have seen it, say "if you're in a place that's getting 98% - > the difference between 98% and totality is a lifetime... Go see the totality if you can.
All three of us have plans to go. L
A lot of life events happened to my family within the next year, and between that and my brother losing his son to cancer, I was/am a completely changed person.

My son and I have been talking about the 2024 event since 2017. So many memories! My daughter is now old enough to go with, I'm convincing my friends to go with. Honestly it's an adventure. If there is cloud cover I'll film the whole thing with a regular lens so we see the shadow move across the clouds to us and darken the sky. That'll be so rad. It's an experience.. And the average life expectancy odds give me some grace in possibly being around in 2044 for the next one.. But that's a lot of tomorrows to count on being there for me..

I'd rather have the experience with my kids. It's worth it.

Don't be at 99% and not travel. If you are within a few hours drive.. Do it.

Pentax KP experience... 3 weeks and 3500 clicks later

Hey everyone.
I mostly just lurk here, but I've been a Pentax user for a long time. (separate story, but first Pentax experience was with a K1000 back in high school and developing my own film, early 90's.)

My history goes something like this: (yes, I've rarely had funds for the "flagship" at the time... Oh well)
Pentax K1000
Yashica FX-7
Pentax ZX-M (the last of my 35mm adventure).
K110D
K200D
K7
K5
K5iis.

My K5 is always too soft (I know, probably pixel peeping too much) - and the K5iis has 175,000 clicks on it, and I have weddings coming up.. So I felt I needed to get a new body so if one goes...
So 3 weeks ago I got the KP.

Here's what will probably end up being a rambling, all-over-the place, non-technical run down of my experience so far with the KP.

First impressions: Man this thing is tiny. Actually so much so, I had to order the grip right away. (I was going to just get by just buying a few spare batteries, but the camera is actually so small it made it necessary for me to get the grip. I bought some spare no-name D-LI90 knockoff batteries. And I love having vertical shutter buttons when working vertically, etc...) My hands aren't monster size, but my pinky can't hold the grip at all, and I felt like I was going to drop it.

Side note on battery life: I think that's more related to how long you have the camera powered on, vs. how many actual shots you take. Battery rated to just over 400 shots? pffffft. I got over 700 my first go out with it, and it only displayed half battery left just when I was finishing. But I'm glad to get the grip.

Buttons: Oh man, more customizable buttons. That's awesome. Was bummed at first that it had no dedicated ISO button on top panel like my K5.. (but then I just reprogrammed the FX3 button to do just that, since I shoot in manual mode 99% of the time.) This is pretty nice.
Lack of top LCD: I didn't think I would miss it. But at first I did. I missed not seeing the ISO, shutter speed, or aperture on the top LCD... for a few days. Once I fixed the FX3 button to change ISO, I change everything while looking through viewfinder, or I press the info button and have it show me the settings.

So, I did a couple shots around the house. Typical, "hey it's 11pm, no one is up, it's dark outside... so hey, the family pet is hanging out... :)"

(will hop for food) ISO3200, Pentax DA* 55mm f/1.6, 1/60

So that was cool. I am pleased with the auto-white balance. Quite frankly I don't know what they did, but it's much improved. I do miss the "Flash" WB setting, as that seemed to be spot on with my Cactus flashes, and render it very pleasing. (they're a little cool, so I always have to make the temperature warmer if I shot in Daylight vs. Flash on my K5). But I can set the WB easy enough manually if I want a setting for that... I'll get to that custom dial thing later.

Anyway... I told you this would be rambling.
SPORTS:
I took it to a football game for the newspaper, but I didn't shoot with it at first because I was worried about what I read about "smaller buffer size" etc etc.. For the paper, I don't need 1000 shots. I need like, 6-10, so the editors can pick what they want to use for the story. So after the first half, I put my (Tamron) 70-200 f/2.8 on the KP and went to town.

Let me just say this: The frame rate is just as fast as the K5. And despite having a smaller buffer, I found the KP much more usable in the field for sports. Why? Paired with a fast SD card, it can handle the bursts in a play, and when the buffer fills up, it clears much faster. (I use a Sandisk Extreme Pro. And I'm not a paid reviewer for anything, I'm just passing that along.) I shoot bursts during a play, and often times in between there are lulls. My K5 - when I fill the buffer, it takes a *long* time to clear. Even with the fast SD card. The KP can handle most of my normal bursts, AND it clears faster, so I get more usable shots.

Now - High school football isn't lit like pro sports... For anyone who shoots it, you know what I'm talking about. Most of the schools don't have great lighting. The older style lights, if you use too fast of a shutter speed, you get green one shot, magenta the next. Because the light flickers/has a phase.
Occasionally you shoot at a few venues that do have good lighting, or they play during the day. But that's rare.

So that's not going to be fixed by the camera. The light is contrasty as hell. It doesn't bother me. It is what it is, I'm paid to get photos for the newspaper in the lighting that's there. I tweak everything in Lightroom to get the most out of the pics. (oh, I shoot RAW by the way. All the time. The few times I thought "oh, it's just my kids goofing around, I'll switch to JPG. No. I've regretted it. I'm not a control freak about much. RAW vs. JPG? RAW every day...)

Autofocus: (for sports).
So - my Tamron 70-200 has always required a heavy correction in camera. Pentax of course rocks with customization. My K5 required a +8. My KP requires a +10. Thankfully that's almost dead on, because it can't go any farther.

Anyone who says you can't use Pentax for sports... well let's just say you can work with what you got. With practice, it's more about timing rather than firing 1000 shots off at a time anyway. I've always used back button focus vs. trying to use shutter-button-focus, AND I don't use continuous focus mode. Single shot, back button focus. Yes, do I hit it a bunch of times? Sure. But I'll tell you, I started getting out of my shell and talking to other photogs at events - and with their Canons and Nikons they often to do the same thing. Guy I just talked to last night admitted he gets more keepers if he uses back button focus on his Canon than if he tries to use auto and have it do 3d tracking.

(disclaimer - this is the one shot in this review that isn't from the KP. It's my K5-iis, with Tamron 70-200).
ISO800, 1/800s, f/3.2

Okay - so buffer is great, and improves my hits vs. the K5. And autofocus is definitely faster than the K5, hands down. So a win-win all around. Nice job Pentax. Here's a few more sports shots:
(One more thing - I don't test my focus adjustments on a chart. I do it on-the-fly. I fixed my Tamron by focusing on the ref's feet, then looking at the grass next to it to see if it was on the right plane. Don't waste your money on test charts. Borrow your spouse/sibling/friend and shoot with it. ) When I was fixing my 55mm f/1.4 - I had my son hold up fingers as I was adjusting. So I ran through 6 shots each with corrections of +1 through +6 to see what worked best in the field vs. on a line chart.

Right... rambling. Sports shots coming:
1/640s, f/3.5, ISO640

1/640s, f/3.5, ISO800

1/800, f/3.5, ISO200

See? You can do it. (I do want to get the Pentax 70-200. Or the 300 f/4. Because I do want the weather sealing for a sports setup. Eventually.)

While we're talking sports, we should also talk high ISO performance:

High ISO performance: I'd say this is... pretty similar to the K5. Up until you hit ISO 1600. Then the K5 degrades, and the KP still is decent. A surprising amount.
The K5 - I cringe when I have to go to 6400. I've did some tests (being weary) at ISO 12,800 and they looked fine for paper. It's not pro football / Sports Illustrated quality. But I'm not shooting in a pro stadium with good lighting either. I'll take what I can get.

ISO 1600, 1/125s, @ f/1.4, Pentax DA* 55mm

ISO 8000: 1/320s, @ f/2.8, Pentax 40mm HD DA (not a fantastic shot, but the venue is the basement of a hotel, where the Tae Kwon Do studio is, it's all fluorescents. It's pretty crap lighting for photos...

ISO 12,800, 1/500s, f/3.2. Tamron 70-200.
(also, here you can see the lights phasing ... bottom portion of screen is starting to turn dark/off color. Ugh. The things we do for extra cash. :)

Oh.. and I've gotten over missing the top LCD by now. And I've assigned the user dials to have base settings I use for night sports. Damn that's handy!
Because I shift from one thing to another so often... I'll very frequently get to a football game and the camera is all set up for portraits / daytime shooting. Not that it's hard to change the WB, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, etc... But turning one dial to get there? Fan-tastic.

PS. I love the weather sealing. This is from today, and is also why I want to get the 70-200 weather resistant Pentax lens. It was raining sideways, windy too. There was another photog with an umbrella there covering his stuff up, until his umbrella blew out backwards. And I'm shooting in the rain confident that all I have to do is cover up the lens, but I don't have to worry about the water getting on the body.

(my KP + magnifying eyecup... I got that years ago. the rubber is starting to peel off.)

Portraits:

Most of these, if not all, are with the DA* 55mm. I love that lens. The depth of field at f/1.4 (or I usually use at f/1.6 or f/1.8) is so shallow it provides such awesome separation.
room light: DA*55, 1/160s, f/2.2, ISO 100

window light: DA*55, 1/125s, f/1.8, ISO 100

Outdoor / HSS Flash: (with Cactus RF60 flashes and V6 trigger) 1/5000s, f/1.8, DA* 55mm, ISO100

I have no complaints here. The KP over the K5 has higher resolution. 24 vs. 16 doesn't seem like much... but it is. Though I don't do a lot of cropping. (I'm pretty aware of what I'm doing when I'm shooting. When I crop it always feels like "that's not what I wanted... it looked better the way I had it..) The only time I crop a lot is for sports when sometimes a) I don't have the reach and have to crop to get tighter in on action. Or b) editor likes to have a selection of vertical vs. horizontal shots to fit paper columns... so I give them half and half usually.

It still feels awkward when I crop though. I did say I would ramble. It's your fault if you've continued to read this far.

Here are some more portraits, since my ADD is kicking in, and I can't remember what I was going to talk about next.
Oh - but the LCD - it throws me off a little. I think it's because I'm not used to it compared to how the K5 looks. So... turn on the histogram when you first get it. (i turn it on and off at random to double check what I'm doing still. But keeping it on gives you a good idea of what the file looks like, vs. what you're seeing on the illuminated LCD screen, which can be misleading one way or the other.

1/100s, f/2, ISO 160

Black and white (conversion on this one done in Topaz B&W Effects 2, I believe)
DA*55, 1/125s f/2, ISO320

DA*55, 1/60s, f/2, ISO320

DA*55, 1/160s, f/2.8, ISO500

Overall:

All I can say is I wish I had gotten this months ago, or with a deal that included the grip. (I'm convinced the grip could probably be offered for $50 and they would still make a profit. It's built like a tank just like the body... but it's not a $230 part... and I feel a little bitchy about that.)

That said.. That's really my only complaint. For someone who shoots a lot, I seem to be averaging about 7k photos the past few months, up and down depending on the season) - This camera is a beast. It handles great (with the grip with my hands.. those with smaller hands may be fine with the body only). It balances well with small and large lenses. The buttons are well placed. (I had thin gloves on today shooting in the nor'easter we were getting today, driving rain/ice pellets etc, and had no issues hitting the correct buttons.) Even with plastic wrapped around the Tamron lens and half over the body. I trust the body, I don't want to get water in that lens.

The image quality is fantastic.

The upgrade in resolution compared to the K5 provides better cropping ability when you need it. Though it does take longer to load in Lightroom / takes up more hard drive space. So there's that. But it's not that significant.

The autofocus is much improved. I'm very impressed. I only shot two full games while I got used to the camera, but I let go today and just trusted it - and it performed great.

I'm feel very good about the KP. My K5IIs is fantastic, but getting so many clicks on it that I was starting to worry about reliability. My backup (K5) I've never been as happy with, and I wouldn't use it if I *needed to get the shot*.

The KP is a fantastic camera. I can't comment on how it compares to the K1 - other than to say the burst rate on the K1 isn't made for sports, and the file size for my use would be a little excessive. The newspaper assignments don't need to be full resolution, in fact in they have specific needs and ask me to downsize for them. Plus I have a limited amount of time to process from the end of game until the deadline that night... So that factored into my consideration, as well as the majority of my lenses are for APS-C. I was prepared to buy a new body, but not any new lenses.

Anyway - more rambling. Final word is: The KP does the job, and does it well. I'm excited to do some night work soon with it. (star trails, work with the O-GPS1 unit, cityscapes, etc..)

Honestly, this is my first "flagship" camera. I've always had to be very frugal with money, I've never been able to afford the top-of-the-line stuff.
But this camera looked very, very intriguing to me. My K5-iis just bit the dust, so I was down to one working body, my KP.

Then the free battery grip sale popped up, I had just gotten paid for a couple wedding jobs, and bam... I found myself ordering.

(let me just say, I've always been peeved at the battery grip price, with the exception of the K200D which was reasonable.)

Super quick first impressions after 6 senior portrait sessions shot with it in two days. (nothing like giving it a workout a day after receiving it:

#1: The autofocus. So much better. My 55mm is really hit or miss on my KP. It has a much, MUCH better keeper rate on the K3-III.
#2: The "lock all buttons" button. I've needed this for so long. Every time I let the camera hang (on my strap) or grab it to shoot again, I roll the wheels with my fingers, or hit the joystick.
#3: Image quality is freakin' oustanding. Of course it's Pentax, so that's to be expected. But it's soooo good.
#4: USB charging: Some folks don't like this. I love it. I hated taking off the battery grip on all my previous cameras just to charge the main battery. This is great, and it charges both batteries.

Anyway, I'll go back to lurking for another month and then post some photos. lol.

I had found the same thing. Most of my lenses I had to add pretty strong + factor to get them to focus correctly on my KP, where really only my Tamron 70-200 had to have adjustment on my K5-iis. My 70mm f/2.4 was the most reliable in that regard. The 55mm, if I wasn't paying attention, would look good in the viewfinder, but be way off once I looked at the shots. (when you get fuzzy eyes in portraits,.. that's not a good feeling when you see them on large screen after you've all gone home from the shoot.)

I had a couple missed focus shots when shooting in extremely bad lighting scenarios with the K3-III, but that wasn't entirely unexpected given the situation I was putting it in.
When I had anything above "okay" ambient light, it was nailing them.

---------- Post added 10-31-2021 at 01:22 PM ----------

that could be. If I recall correctly I got my K5-IIs as it was being discontinued,
Either way I was definitely a late late adopter on that one.

yesssss I remember stumbling upon this with my KP and thought "well, what a novel thing!" and it is really awesome actually, instead of doing certain photos and having an auxiliary timer or what not, you just program it in with the bulb mode settings.
It's super handy! (maybe some might rarely use it, I do a lot of long exposure stuff..)

Took a road trip from Massachusetts to Tennessee with my son..
2125 total miles.
5 days
2 nights sleeping at rest areas on the highway, once knowing that was the plan, once because our hotel overbooked...
1 national park (Shenandoah),
1 time nearly running out of gas... (I put in 16.3 gallons of gas into my car after I nearly had a panic attack seeing the gas gauge so low... it only officially holds 16 gallons!)

Anyway...
This is my best shot from the day..

Okay, so what exposure mode are you using on the camera?
and what trigger?

Hmmm. Also one thing I've noticed, if I don't push the trigger in all the way (on the hotshoe) sometimes the connection doesn't seem to be quite right.. but in my testing just now, I can't get it to *not* fire in TTL. :hmm:
But I love problem solving so fill in a couple of the details above and I'll see if I can help you figure this out.

---------- Post added 02-09-2021 at 10:09 PM ----------

It does seem that when I put it in HSS mode, then changing the flash exposure compensation on the trigger doesn't seem to do anything. It's in HSS mode and that's it. (I have the X-Pro trigger for Pentax ([URL=https://www.adorama.com/fprrr2propn.html?[/URL])

hey Kyle.
I'm not home at the moment, but I'll write myself a note to see if I can test this combination out when I get home.

I have an AD200, and I have both a KP and a K5iis. I'll see if I can replicate the situation.

Here's another update:
My son and I went down to the grocery store just after a storm passed through and saw godrays. I said "wanna go up on the mountain for sunset?" "YESSSS" he says.

It was. Epic.

another view:

I hung out with a friend at the base of Mt. Greylock trying to spot the comet a few nights later and I got this shot.

Then I got the comet a few nights later. This is two shots, an astrotracer shot of a minute and a half combined with a non-AT shot for the foreground.
Cosmic snowball, anyone?

I do have to say this: The astrotracer: Does anyone else find that, even though it may say up to 5 minute exposure time is possible, it's best to keep it as low as possible.. like... pushing two minutes gives me too much movement. I mean it's still much better than not using the AT if I'm trying *not* to get star trails... but I felt like on the K5-iis it worked better.

Maybe I was less picky?
I'll post a few more later, and a shutter count.

So I finally shot a photo in Jpg mode and checked the shutter count, up over 46k shots in just about 2 years.
Not too shabby, not my all-time high, but certainly not my lowest numbers either.

I've been working on off-camera flash technique lately. Today I had free time, and my daughter had her choice of things to do today: She wanted to do a photoshoot.
So we rocked it. Here are a couple photos. Taken with the 55mm f/1.4 and the KP, + the Flashpoint (Godox) Li-Ion manual flash. Specs shown here, and setup. I have a Flashpoint EVOLV 200 (Godox AD200) and an AD600 as well, but that power wasn't needed for this shoot. Plus again, light weight is a plus.

Also used a magmod MagBounce. And I'll tell you what, for individual portraits? those things rock. Because I can have them on a light stand and not worry about weighing the light stand down with a sandbag. It may not seem like much, but seriously the weather here? There always seems to be gusts, even on the calmest of days. And the more weight you have to carry? The less spontaneous you can be. Which isn't always a bad thing, but isn't always good either.
I can get them up really close to people's faces (to soften the light as much as possible) and it still renders a very pleasing light pattern / not harsh if I don't want it to be.

It started raining while we were shooting. I had a ziploc bag with me.
(Actually this is a pretty good downpour, we almost had to make a run for it, but it let up about 30 seconds after this pic was taken). You can see the droplets... 1/1000s plus a flash.

Here is some star trail work I've been doing with the KP. I just finally started nailing focus on these. (my problem, not a camera problem.) and I'm very happy with some early results here. I have a feeling the next six months are going to be huge for me for doing star trails.

And another:

I think this fall I probably won't be freelancing for the newspaper anymore. I totally still enjoy it, but it really doesn't pay a lot, and with COVID-19 still bouncing around the US I have a feeling events are going to be called off at random, and I can't see the newspaper needing me for much of anything this year.

Anyway, if there's still anyone on the fence about owning a KP, have no doubts it is a capable machine.

Okay, here's an update:

I'm now up to almost 40,000 clicks on the KP, after a bit over a year with it.
I have not regretted a moment.

The live view with focus peaking is fantastic for those situations where you have the time to use it.

I still actually use my K5-iis for most of my newspaper work, simply because the file sizes are smaller and I need to get photos processed. (and the newspaper does not need large file size, in fact when I first started freelancing for them in 2017 they asked me to downsize everything because they didn't need that quality. LOL)

Anyway, 3 weddings, countless photos of my kids, engagement sessions, senior sessions, almost all of it is 100% good. The KP does have struggles with the 55mm f/1.4. Though I guess that could be most cameras. But I find once I tuned the focus on the K5-iis, it was spot on, all the time. With the KP, there are times it struggles. I could have the focus tuned and it hits 100% in natural light, at close head/shoulder portrait distances, then at full-body length it just blows the focus. (when I'm not using the live view / focus peaking).

That's my one gripe, is that with that lens I want to use it mostly wide open, that's what it's for... I don't want to stop down to 2.2. lol.

Here's some wedding stuff. Oh I've pretty much ditched the Cactus gear, now that Flashpoint (Godox) supports Pentax and HSS. I hate to be like that, but I wanted something with more power. Cactus had been working on that project but the funding never made it, then Godox came out with triggers compatible with the Pentax system and it opens up a whole new world for less-expensive flashes. (and some really top notch gear).

Oh I did screw up my wrist though, carrying the camera+grip+L-adapter+Flash mounted on that adapter. With one hand, for most of the reception. Ugh. That was in January. It's been on and off ever since.
I play ice hockey though too, and that doesn't help. (playing goal/holding the goal stick with that hand also).

There's this new night club that opened up, literally a block away from my house. It's fantastic, and I know the owners, so they have no problem with me shooting. I'm working on gathering enough material to do an exhibition somewhere, maybe even there.

those LED lights though... IT DOES take a lot of finagling in post to get these usable. LED lighting systems are so not camera friendly.
of course they also are easier on the artists/doesn't make it 90 million degrees on stage as older hot lights do.

This woman had a voice, I fell in love with her just because of that. (I'm joking, but her voice was amazing. I do have a bunch of their albums now. Arc Iris is the band.)

Oh, I cracked my screen. I think I had a loose Limited lens in the same pouch as the camera. Oooops. The Limited won.
But, it's only a minor crack, hasn't started leaking throughout the panel yet, so I'm good for now.

Did a sunset bikini shoot for a friend of mine. She was very happy. (this is safe for work)

Then I take my kids out sometimes and do special shoots for them.
My daughter loves faeries and all things nature.

She's the best.

Then there's some portrait stuff I've done

This guy is a freight train.

This is not straight natural light. I have a flash going to his left, Flashpoint AD200.

Another senior, we did some standard stuff, then a few maybe more artistic shots.

Oh I shoot for this festival that I've been involved with for the past 4 years now.
There are some amazing performers. This crew does fire breathing, it's amazing, and difficult to shoot, in the darkness and the sudden exposure changes due to the fireballs. It's amazing fun to shoot though!

This is the end of the fireball

and here's an amazing finale they did

I still go out and shoot for fun.

That's the year in a nutshell. I haven't been on the forum a lot since last year, with the day job, this side work, and my kids, it's hard to find time to get on here.
I have to go read on the talk about the upcoming new APS-C..

Yea I've been scraping by doing photography "on the side" for the last 25 years.. Now my job is going away and well.. I can give this a whirl and go full bore while I'm on unemployment and see if I can get it to take off.

I still love my K5iis and would still be 100% confident in it, if it weren't that I have 175,000 clicks on it, and I wonder about how long the shutter will last. You can't do weddings on a 6 year old camera without a solid backup plan :c)
(I don't do weddings all the time. I did 6 last year, and I have two coming up. I've had more success shooting seniors and doing family portraits for wall art.

If you have any questions feel free. I can even take a few side-by-side shots with both using the same lens/shooting the same scene if you wish.

Oh - and I like the articulated LCD screen for shooting low macro or if you have the camera in a very low position (where it's nearly impossible unless you lay down to peek through the viewfinder.)
or for holding camera over my head (using live view) - like when the team wins and they're all in a bunch jumping around - before even with live view I couldn't see the screen holding it over my head and at a down angle.. Now I can use live view and flip the LCD down and see what the camera is seeing. That's really nice.

I wanted to post this one from last weekend, full size... because I think with the rain coming down and the slight motion blur, it's really rad...
Plus it shows off the image quality of the KP + this lens, in nasty conditions...

Small version below, full size linked ---> here:)

so far I've found the high ISO to be as good as the K5, and I anecdotally can shoot at higher ISOs that don't make me cringe when I pixel peep.
I say anecdotally because I haven't done any formal sort of tests. I think they are nearly identical up until you get into the 6400+ range, then I think the KP wins out. I've shot up to ISO 10,000 and 12,000, which I never would've done with the K5IIs, and the images looked perfectly usable.

This is something I think I will test, since i have both cameras etc... I'll do a couple identical tests, side-by-side, and post the results.

KP now $696 US at B&H, Adorama, Amazon..

I'd say I'm bummed that I didn't wait, but frankly i'm not. I got mine for $896 at the beginning of October and nearly have 10k shots on it already. I'm glad I got it when I did.

If you're on the fence, get it.

So I just recently started posting again, I've been really busy. I may disappear again shortly, it all depends on how busy I get, but here's some stuff I've done recently.

I do freelance work for the newspaper, and that ends up being mostly local sporting events. Luckily there's a nearby college, and I occasionally get to go to a game and shoot. It's a nice field, and daytime games are the bomb compared to Friday night high school football under dingy lights.

September 22 2018.
Shutter speed sometimes varies, depending on changing sun. This was a decent game, some high clouds that made the light a touch softer. If it were 100% full sun, it makes it ultra-contrasty.
Shot with the K5-IIs and the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8, mostly @ F/3.2 or F/3.5. I don't use 2.8 on that lens, I've never had luck with it wide open.

Anyway, here's some pics, I'll start posting more often. They won't all be this quality, I mostly get sent to poorly lit venues for high school sports. ;c)

just before the game, youth local football teams cheering them as they come on the field:

I haven't done too much handheld in low light yet. So definitely interested in the SR. And I do some interiors and architecture stuff as well.. So I'll be definitely hitting the pixel shift feature soon to test it out and compare...

I've been pricing watching for 2 months now, missed the Amazon daily deal... and noticed the price on B&H and Adorama both jumped... (one by $100, one by $200...) so I went ahead and purchased on Amazon for sub-$900 (US).

That $870-896 price (other than the aforementioned Amazon deal that I missed) was the lowest it's been... and two days after Photokina with no announcement, it crept back up on the major sites...
Adorama is back down again, but B&H is scattered. (some existing kits are still $900, but the body only listing is $999) ... anyway... I got mine now. It'll last me a good long time, and I'll definitely get my money's worth out of it like I have my k5-IIs. (which is still going strong but needed a backup in the lineup in case it gives out at some point.)
