Dreaming of Flight
~~~~~
Stars streaking over an abandoned Convair 240 airplane. To create this night photo, I set the camera on a tripod. I opened the camera shutter for a long time. While the shutter was open, I walked around with a handheld flashlight capable of producing different colors and illuminated the scene. During the exposure, all the light I shined on the subject was cumulative. This process is called "light painting". Why? Because one uses the flashlight as a paint brush, "brushing" on light, not paint. Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. And it's more fun than AI-generated images.
Drive to Greatness
~~~~~
An old service station and cafe with a V-shaped roof and canopy on a cold 20F night in rural Kansas. To create this night photo, I set the camera on a tripod. I opened the camera shutter for a long time. While the shutter was open, I walked around with a handheld flashlight capable of producing different colors and illuminated the abandoned building with warm white and blue light. During the exposure, all the light I shined on the subject was cumulative. This process is called "light painting". Why? Because one uses the flashlight as a paint brush, "brushing" on light, not paint. Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. And it's more fun than AI-generated images. I love the way the streaking clouds frame the gas station as well, one of the reasons I love long exposure night photography so much. That and it's thoroughly enjoyable, always a beautiful, creative experience.

I'd say this is an eerie presence during the night!

I hear you about not fitting in the small cars. I really liked 1962 Corvettes as a kid...until I tried to fit into one. Not. Even. Close. I am not quite 6' 3", but I have a long torso, so I kinda sit like someone who is 6' 3". Totally get it.

Your description of the Buicks and why you like them sound fantastic.

I think these Joshua Trees are pretty special, and i can only imagine what someone thought of these odd plants when they came across them. Thanks!

Thank you very much. I had a faster shutter speed, so there's not much in the way of star trails here. I was doing portrait photography and basically snuck this in while he was resting.

I wanted to definitely tie in the light of the gravity fuel pump in terms of color and keep it simple. Thanks!

I don't know a ton about cars although I LOVE vintage cars. What is it about Buicks that you particularly love? And which ones?

Ascension
~~~~~
Myth has it that Mormon pioneers thought these trees looked like the outstretched arms of Joshua. I photographed this on a beautiful, albeit below-freezing, evening in magical Joshua Tree National Park, my spiritual home for night photography. I was photographing with Levi Chen in this magical place. To create this night photo, I set the camera on a tripod. I opened the camera shutter for a long time. While the shutter was open, I walked around with a handheld flashlight capable of producing different colors and illuminated the scene. During the exposure, all the light I shined on the subject was cumulative. This process is called "light painting". Why? And it's more fun than AI-generated images. Levi creates music as Liquid Gardens. This is named after one of his songs from his first album.
Long Ago on Corvan II
~~~~~
I love this scene of a vintage truck, most likely a 1928 Dodge Brothers work truck, and an old gravity pump in the desert night. To create this night photo, I set the camera on a tripod. I opened the camera shutter for a long time. While the shutter was open, I walked around with a handheld flashlight capable of producing different colors and illuminated the subject with warm white and red light to enhance the mystique during the exposure.

The sides of the photo are extended only because the photo is otherwise too long to post on Instagram, so it's a way of making it 4x5. I darkened and blurred them so they would offer the sense of continuation without being "fake" since I extended the sides using Generative Fill. But I don't want to pass that off as being real, so it's either this or having black sides altogether. And I just don't like the way that looks. I have gotten lazy lately and just done one process for everything.

I believe I only used blue for this photo, not warm white light as I often do. I think the result of that is just from reflections. It's a small cockpit, and there's a lot of reflections and not much room to work in.

Apologies for the late response, but I have been away for the holidays.

Strange nights inside the cockpit of an abandoned Douglas DC-3 airplane, located in a grassy field in rural Kansas. To create this night photo, I set the camera on a tripod. A lonesome Buick greets the night at Nelson ghost town in Nevada near a full moon hidden behind mountains. To create this night photo, I set the camera on a tripod. I opened the camera shutter for a long time. While the shutter was open, I walked around with a handheld flashlight capable of producing different colors and illuminated the scene. During the exposure, all the light I shined on the subject was cumulative. This process is called "light painting". Why? Thanks. This form of photography - night photography - is definitely the opposite of auto everything. It's manual everything. It's not that difficult, but it does take a bit of practice. Thank you very much!

Thanks, Mike! I did not have access to the inside of the house, so I shined the blue light from another window so that it would shine out the door window. I used the handheld light for both the blue light as well as the shadows on the porch and some other things such as the exterior wall facing the camera directly.

All of it is done through handheld lighting (no stationary lights). That's the power of light painting. Quick, creative, and efficient. Doesn't take up much space.

Thanks. Fun with shadows. I love being able to mess with that and get photos that don't look like anything else and help with the composition. Handheld lighting offers a great amount of freedom.

Well, that guy is a towering giant in the field of night photography (along with Michael Kenna, Bill Brandt, Alfred Stieglitz, the Vargas Brothers, Paul Martin, and others).

Absolutely stunning, and yes, he had very involved, complicated setups, which make his photos all the more amazing.
