Thanks! I wasn't confident with the rear phot they have. I might skip this one and get the 17-50 2.8 for my "fast-ish" needs instead.

Takumar question, M42 or PK?

Hi,

I'm looking around the used market and found an SMC Takumar 50mm 1.4. I was hoping you guys can help me identify if this is a PK or an M42 mount.

My money is on the M42 but I sent an email to the shop and they answered this particular Takumar is a PK mount. If this is M42, do we have any known issues with infinity focus if adapted to a K series APS-C DSLR?

Thanks!

K50 in 2023?

Currently... officially nothing. I rocked a K200D for a few weeks but sold it for a bit of profit. It was nice CCD. ISO performance wasn't great. I was capped at 1600.

I'm looking at a k5 at the moment but with some more flip sales ahead. I could probably push straight to a K3 instead of stopping by a K5. However, there is a deal for a k5 with and 18-135 that's tempting. I'm aiming for the lens more than the body.

My xpro2 remains, although I've sold all my vintage lenses. I've had my fun with them and will not shoot with any more if there is no AF involved.

Pentax KP or K3 mk1?

Ok gonna revive this thread again instead of making a new one.

I've let the weekend go and a couple of nice deals slipped off my grasp too. But I have a couple of sales on the way on camera gear I don't use. I'm gearing towards two cameras now:

-K3 mark1
-K5iis

The problem is, there's only about £100 difference between the K5iis and the K3 mk1 and that's a whole generation better, not to mention more megapickles which is nice for cropping, probably will help with landscape which is what I'm going to try with this system apart from street. The k3 mk1 is £200 - £250 less than the KP which is a budget that can go to lenses.

with the K5iis, I'm worried it'll be slow in "operation speed" compared to the k30 and k50. And with the thought of having the K3 just near the price range is not gonna stop nagging my head.

Also, I'm a bit worried that 800g of K3 is going to be heavy to lug around all day. But it DOES have an excellent grip which mitigated my weight worries with the 650g K30. Of course, this is near a kilogram of camera body without the lens.

I've let 2 deals on a KP go. I have been reading a lot of reports of the tilting screen failing with the ribbon developing micro tears from use. A lot seems to be at a 2-3yr period based on the posts from various forums. There doesn't seem to be any luck with repairs or parts for DIY. What do you guys think about this? I'd like to have this system for keeps.

Articulating screen is nice but I've used the xpro2 so much I can live without it. I'd still like the small form factor and 100g lighter KP than the K3 if this issue was nonexistent.

*PS: I did have a KP for a week but returned it. The rubber grips and everything else were physically falling off. For something that's marketed as "excellent condition".

No go on the K70 or KS2. I'd like the dampened shutter models.

Bottom grip connector cover for KP?

Ok, I've slept it off and found an easy solution on Amazon. There's an adhesive caulk used in kitchen sinks and windows which is basically like a roll of tape. Just tape over the hole, if I'm being really meticulous, I could probably cut it to as close a measure as I can with an Xacto knife.

Ahhh darn...

I mean, would this be be an actual issue not having this cover underneath? Weather sealing-wise? I've seen a lot of fuji X-T's being sold without this grip cover.

Hmm if I could somehow get that plastic cap from the PENTAX D-BG7 grip...It might just plug into the bottom cover

Aaah damn! I was hoping it was, or at least it'll slap there and I could stick it there somehow with something. I've managed to track down a local seller for the k3's but it's a dead end for the K3. Maybe I should go for the 11k shutter one that's more complete (well it's not as fresh tas the 800 shutter count one).

Hmm I'm thinking of filling it up with blue tack, they mold up nicely and harden up pretty well, easy to take off if needed...then silicone caulk on the top. May look a bit messy.

Hi,

I'm after a mint KP that's less than 1k in shutter count. The problem is that there is no cover for the grip connector underneath. I was wondering if the cover for the K3 would fit? Or have we found a solution like a 3D print model?

thanks!

Ok, so no go on the K50, it's not just an aperture block problem. The lcd itself is shot. So I now have an istDL with organs to donate. It takes red photos for some reason, even the RAW ones so I guess the sensor is just dead.

Hmm that makes sense, so it's possible to take video with an aperture block. I'll wait and see with the reply. I have donor istD for solenoids.

Hmm I'm going to bump this post of mine for a follow up question about aperture block problem.

When a K30 or K50 has an aperture block...does the video work just fine? I'm trying to obtain a faulty k50 that looks like it has an aperture block problem from the description, but the seller says it's fine when he shoots video, but black when he takes photos. I'm trying to determine if this is an LCD problem or an aperture problem.

Hmm, I thought in body noise reduction turned the image to mush (well at least from experience on smaller cameras like that Q and the X30), I guess without dedicated hardware it would.

I'll have to go and see for myself then. A KP is on its way and will arrive tomorrow. The F lenses have already arrived and looks like I'm covered with lenses to try out for awhile. I'll grab an HD lens somewhere along the way. I bought it from MPB, for a safe 14-day return just incase I don't get along with it. Just in time for my work leave next week.

Photographic Dynamic Range versus ISO Setting

Hmm, I've taken a look at the chart and I don't think I understand it quite right. All of the cameras I have tested seem to have a linear graph as the ISO increases, except for the KP. Does this mean that at iso 800 and up, the KP is able to maintain more dynamic range/image quality whilst the images on the other cameras start breaking apart with noise harder? (this is impressive if my very limited understanding of this is somehow correct)

Hmm from these last posts, with the KP's high ISO capability, I'm making a ballpark figure in my head that it will perform just about the level of my xpro2....I just hope not including the battery life. But at least that's something easily remedied by bringing 1 or 2 packs along with me.

There isn't any focus in particular. If I happen to be in a certain place with a camera (and shooting is allowed), I'll shoot anything that's of interest right there and then. Just not macro, I get really bad eye strain leading to a migraine trying out macro.

Apart from taking photos, I also flip camera and lens sales. I've made enough profit to at least afford me a relatively modern camera. But of course, my budget is still within reason and the KP is just around the higher limit of my budget. I've tried the K30 and istD, but I'd like something higher. Sure, K30/50 could be enough for what I do, I've graduated from that stage. I'd like at something 24mp now for ease of cropping.

I don't really require much with cameras. All I want is a camera that's overall snappy in operation (Unlike the X100 and X100S - oh my goodness! Those were SLOW!) and a battery that doesn't die out on me while I'm in "the zone". By bad battery, I'm still having PTSD with the pentax Q. As long as I can focus, on a single point then that's really all I need. I thought I was going to have trouble with a DSLR from mirrorless but I actually ended up liking the shooting experience.

I did try the X-T5 but returned it after 2 weeks. The build quality of the one I had was terrible. The dials and shutter button, ON/OFF were
jiggling around so much, it was really worrying. Also, the camera felt so modern, I felt like the camera was doing most of my work. I did not feel like I was the one who took the photo. I didn't really connect with it.

A bit of an update:

I sold the K30. I'm leaning more towards the KP now, but I'm just a tad bit worried about the battery life. If it has the same battery as the K30...I wasn't too impressed with that, in fact, I pretty much used AA batteries on the K30 because of it. It's not as bad as np135 on the fuji's but it didn't last 2 days without a charge like the AA batteries. Now that was with the k30, which is a significantly older model than the KP. I wonder how bad is "bad" on the KP battery?

My usual shooting habit is just to turn the camera on/off in between shots if I don't have anything to shoot constantly. I don't use AF-C, I mainly use single-point and recompose. Chimping... ok but only when there's downtime, like we're out for lunch or coffee.

The K3 mk1 is still not out of the equation as it's £320 vs. £580 on the KP in price. I could free up some more funds for a lens with the K3. I wonder how different the image quality would be? I understand the KP has a newer sensor.

Speaking of lenses, I've just secured a huge haul of Pentax F lenses for just £100.

They're going to be the
F 28 2.8
F 50 1.7
F 80-200 (I already have this, but this one might be mint. Mine has a tiny dead bug on the front element, surprisingly does not show in the images)
F 28-80 macro kit lens (it's bad, I know. But I could sell for £10 I guess).

All of them boxed and looks pretty mint. I'm hoping to use them on this pentax I'm getting.

Pentax KP or K3 mk1?

Hi,

So...I did something that I might regret in later years. I sold my Xpro2, for some sizeable profit from when I bought it.

Meanwhile, I'm using the K30 bargain I got a few weeks ago and it's doing great after the aperture swap. I'm thinking about two things really. I could go and get an X-T4 or take a break from Fujifilm and try out a stronger Pentax body. Part of me has started questioning my photography. Am I improving? Is it just the post-edit film simulations (classic negative applied on RAW) that are carrying my game? Coming back to pentax has brought me back to the reality that, I don't necessarily need to keep chasing that "Fujifilm" look.

At the moment, I'm looking at two cameras:

Pentax K3 mk1 £350-380
Pentax KP £550-600

Looking at the spec sheet. The KP looks to be winning pretty much by just the flip screen and I kinda dig those customizable dials on the top and the smaller-looking body brings me a bit closer to the X-T fujifilm body. Meanwhile, £200 pounds cheaper than the K3 with the fixed screen, and a 1 fps shutter faster.

Mainly, I only shoot street and dipping by foot on landscape (with not much success). Nothing professional. No wildlife, no sports. I was wondering what you people think beyond the spec sheet. (I'm sniffing at both forums on the K3 and KP). The flip screen from the KP would be a welcome addition but isn't really a deal breaker. And I'm not sure if the live view on the K3 and the KP is fast enough to be used just like a mirrorless camera. Not really looking at the K3mkii, I'd like to have the built-in flash.

My current lens lineup is pretty humble and I'm not planning on getting anything high-end.

DA 18-135 came with the K30 for a total of just £120 for the body and the lens
F 80-200 £12 plastic fantastic
DA-L 55-300 I won on eBay for £30

Basically, I'm just looking for 1 prime for the casual portrait. I'm looking at either the DA 35 2.4 or F 50 1.7 or the FA 35 F2 and that should be more than covers what I need. The fun part is that the whole setup is complete and will cost less than my Fujinon 35mm 1.4

Hi guys, as in previous threads, I've acquired and revived an aperture problem K30 and it came with the DA 18-135. At the moment, I'm trying to optimize my Fujifilm lenses.

To start with, I've had some great experiences with the DA 18-135mm, I had lowered expectations since I had the Fuji XF 18-135 and it wasn't very good. Then again, I had it quite early in my photography journey, and could be a skill issue of mine than a hardware issue. Fast forward 1 year later, and I'm thinking of giving it a go as a travel lens. The K30 with the 18-135mm pretty much covers what I need and it was LOADS of fun taking it along with me as a stand-alone kit and even performed well when I got rained out! I wanted a similar one for my FujiFilm set instead of taking 3 lenses (Fujinon 35 1.4, 18-55 and 90f2).

After some blabbering, my question is really: Do any of you have experience with both the DA 18-135 and the XF 18-135mm and make a comparison?

thanks!

hmm ok now multiple people have mentioned this and I just noticed...there IS a flash button above the RAW! dammit! Alright, it's popping up now. Whew! I can sleep soundly now! (and retain what's left of this camera's resale value just in case I get the itch to get a K3).

I've been playing around with flash lately for a fill during daylight, a built-in one is always a plus for me (my xpro2 doesn't even come with one and took me ages to find that tiny EF-X8)
