I think for the price of the Fuji XT4 + lens you could have got a Canon EOS R + 24 - 105mm lens for the same money. You would then have a full frame mirrorless camera system. I'm not biased and I don't harbour brand loyalty. I'm on this forum because I own a 645Z which is a different type of beast altogether. But I have always used Canon's as my workhorse system because they have never failed me yet after starting with the A1 in 1980. With regard to your 11 year old Tamron Lenses, maybe they just can't resolve the higher resolution that the K3 produces. Who knows, but if the K3 works with Pentax lenses which is good glass then I would be pointing the finger at the Tamrons as the culprit. Maybe the Tamron AF motors and gear have just had enough. You wouldn't notice on a lower res but definitely notice with a higher res if the point of focus is always a bit loose.

Pentax 645z - worth 'nothing' on used market?

This I doubt. MF definitely strangles your workflow, and the number of keepers is less, and the autofocus is still archaic compared to top brand full frame. But MF is still a requirement for a lot of fashion editorials and the niche market is a bit more niche than it used to be.

The Pentax 645Z is a bit of a legend in it's own lifetime. Back in 2014 (or whenever it was released) it made MF relatively affordable compared to Phase One and Hassies and it also allowed the use of some pretty iconic lenses from the film era at relatively very low prices compared to it's MF competitors. And still does. The problem with Ricoh is that it never committed a lot of budget to MF development and was overtaken by big budget rivals in both full frame and MF.

That takes nothing away from the 645Z though. I personally absolutely love it with all it's quirks and that shutter sound is something to die for. Sure it's more difficult these days to differentiate IQ, resolution and dynamic range with modern full frame cameras, but there is definitely a paying market for the images that it produces. Landscapes at A2 print size are superb.

I will keep mine until it just doesn't work any more. And then I will insist that it gets buried with me...lol. Along with all the lenses. That will make for a heavy coffin but I won't be carrying it...lol

Welcome Errol. I am a Canon 5D4 shooter but I also use Pentax 645Z for studio and landscape work. I am new here too and have found everyone to be friendly and very knowledgeable. Enjoy.

Camera Exposure Profiles for Sekonic L-858D
Posted By Pops

I have just ordered a Godox Radio Trigger for my Lightmeter and realised that the firmware had to be updated to Version 17. In the process of updating the firmware, I discovered that the Sekonic data transfer software needed, also had the ability to create Camera Exposure Profiles that can be uploaded into the light meter and subsequently selected for use.

Has anyone actually done this and if so, does it make a difference? I read through the rather long manual and it seemed like an awful lot of faff to achieve the profiles. My exposure correction has generally been looking at the tethered shots and adjusting power or repositioning strobes to achieve the look that I'm after. I never even thought about using exposure correction profiles.

Is this a worthwhile thing to do?

If you do take it apart then take a photograph of every step. You will need this when putting it back together again. I would be surprised it you had to desolder terminals just to remove the board. Everything is normally connected by flat ribbon cables where you have to unclip the flat connectors. Very similar to how a laptop is put together.

It could well be a dry solder joint between the USB connector and the main board. That would just need resoldering. This actually takes us back to your original post. If you can get access to the board then anyone capable of soldering could probably do the job. It's just a question of whether you want to risk disassembling the camera yourself. I personally wouldn't but if needs must then surely there must be some sort of documentation on the internet somewhere. You are just going to have to search for it.

It does sound like a hardware problem causing an intermittent loss of connection on the camera's USB port unfortunately.

For file sharing the spanner 2 USB connection would be MSC, but you will have it in PTP for tethering. Normally when I connect the camera to the computer the LCD screen is empty. As soon as I enable tether capture in LR and the camera is recognised then the camera will go to normal shooting mode with the LCD showing all the normal stuff. Does this happen with you? Also it might be worth checking if there is an updated Pentax plugin for LR. Are you using Creative Cloud version of LR and get all the normal updates? Is firmware on camera at 1.3? I think tether plugin is at 1.3.0 if you are not using image transmitter.

It's easier with a viewfinder than LCD screen on GR ...

I'll confess to having three camera systems, 1 Pentax 645Z for MF, 1 Canon 5D4 for everyday work and 1 Canon M6 ll for walkabouts. I guess the M6 is pretty close to the GR and I always use the EVF that clips onto the hotshoe. The little M6 is indeed a very capable camera and I really do enjoy using it especially for street photography. However I am definitely not a fan of using the screen for composition and shot taking. Even at arms length I can't see it properly without putting my glasses on. The only time that screen gets used is for ground level shots where I can flip the screen up and compose the shot from above. It's either that or lie on my belly which gets larger as I get older.

Manual focussing for portraits.

In the old days we used to have focusing screens, split focus or whatever. These days not so much. The one thing I have found on my Pentax is that if I use a purely manual focus lens like a 135mm LS, then the camera focus system will still beep when you achieve focus, and it is accurate if you have the modelling lights on. I always aim for f8 in portraits and start off with a dark frame with the lights off. That way you can control how your backdrop is lit so it doesn't really matter whether it's still in focus because of the depth of field. Just a thought.

What I would do is synchronise the images that I want to from Lightroom Classic to Lightroom on the web. In LR Classic you have to mark the folder as available for public viewing. I then go to LR on the web, select image, Control click, select 'Create Link'. Then copy the link and paste it below.

Location Portrait Lens for 645Z

Thank you all for the input. I've actually got the 150mm f2.8 and never really considered it. I just thought the 120mm would be closer to the mark. I will give the 150mm a whirl. I've also got a 135mm LS lens which I use for food photography. It's manual focus which would make it restrictive for location shoots but with food I just stick it on a tripod and focus in LV mode with the magnification turned up. It's a lovely lens but the leaf shutter is sticky so I turn that off. Thanks again.

Location Portrait Lens for 645Z

Hi there,

I'm looking for advice on a decent portrait lens for outdoor work on the 645Z. I am looking at a PENTAX FA 645 SMC 120mm F4 Macro AF Auto Focus Lens and was wondering if anyone had working experience with these lenses. On full frame I've always shot outdoor portraits with a 135mm f2 and I love the compression I get with it so I want to try and translate this to outdoor portrait work on the 645Z. I would appreciate any thoughts on this.

Thank you.

About my new external flash...

First of all does the XPro P trigger fire the flash gun remotely. The flashgun needs to be in slave mode and the channel and group needs to be the same on both units. Test fire the trigger before fitting it to the camera. This will establish that they are talking to each other. If they are then fit the trigger to the camera and take a test shot. I'm sure the camera manual will tell you how to use external flash.

Hi Rain. We talked earlier about your 645Z problems. I'm loving your monochrome studio images. I too have a website but I haven't categorised my images and it hasn't been updated for a while. It's a stab at putting what I do on the internet. Graham Wood

Just Got a Pentax 645NII! Any Lens Recommendations for Landscape Photography?

To answer the second part of your original post. The back pack that I use is the Lowepro ProTactic BP350 AW II. The camera itself is quickly accessible from the top compartment and the lenses can be accessed from the side compartments. I find the bag is absolutely ideal for going walkabouts with that camera system.

With regard to the 35mm FA, I forgot that you were using an NII. I use the lens for landscapes on a 645Z and get rid of any barrel distortion in photoshop. My bad.

I feel for you. I use a tether tools block that I screw into the side tripod mount to secure the cable. It is more secure than a Jerk Stopper. I know nothing of removing the main board but maybe one of those WiFi SD cards could help. I'm guessing you would use Lightroom for tethering as Capture One doesn't do Pentax. You can set LR to auto import from a specific directory and you can push images to that directory through a WiFi SD card. It would be slow though. I have to admit that I personally would send my 645Z to an authorised repair centre and rent another body if I really needed to tether. Beyond that I can't think of what else to suggest.
