Rubber door USB/HDMI/DC port broken - DIY repair.

My K-7's rubber door / flap cover to the USB/HDMI/DC port broke down into several parts. The hinge had been broken for a while, now the door itself had broken into parts. I see that this is common for the K-7 and K-5 series made by Hoya, especially in hotter climates.

I was organising my bike spare parts box when I came across some rubber strips that were supplied with handlebar lights and I realized that I could potentially use them to cover over the broken ports on my K-7.

For reference, the strip I used was exactly 15mm wide and 2mm deep. I cut it to length and then carefully trimmed off the corners so it would fit in the hole. Then I cut a couple of blocks using more of the 2mm thick rubber and I used a 1mm thick strip along one edge, see photos for arrangement. The rubber can be glued together using super glue (cyanoacrylate adhesive). I used 'Zap-A-Gap' glue. I was lucky to have this strip of rubber that had a nice texture and was exactly the right width. However, you should be able to find something at a hardware store or rubber products place, though you would likely have to buy at least a meter length...

The cover just pushes into place and holds well. You must be careful to make it an exact tight fit. I haven't bothered to make a hinge as that would involve gluing something to the camera and it stays in fine anyway.

You will notice in the photos that the microphone port is also missing it's cover. I have found "3.5mm headphone dust covers" are available for mobile phones and have ordered one from the large internet website that sells that sort of stuff. I'll see how that works out when it turns up next week.

I have the older non PLM 55-300. If you use it below 190mm it's a stop faster than at 300mm. 190mm should be fine indoors. Just find that point and keep below it and you will have a moderately fast lens that is only a stop slower and 10mm shorter than a 70-200 f/2.8, which you would probably shoot at f/4 anyway. 😉

New GR live event

The timetable seems to be more a round table for user discussions. So seems unlikely to be available live online as they couldn't control the entire process. Ricoh staff only get 2x blocks of 5 minutes speaking time, which makes a product launch unlikely. They also say recording the event is prohibited.

GRIII is unavailable wherever I've looked. Must back order and the price has gone up. Fingers crossed that it's getting time for GRIV.

OK, this is a wild stab in the dark and lots of MAYBEs.
Is one of the buttons stuck? Maybe this could happen if a button is "held down". Like it feels a bit hard to push? Maybe if you wipe around the buttons on the camera with a damp cloth and "massage" the buttons. Maybe there is salt (shooting near the ocean) or dust.
Maybe check the memory cards and card door.

Convenient lens for wedding (max 150$/€)

More important than the lens is to PRACTICE A LOT beforehand. Go and shoot any event you can with a lot of people. Volunteer to shoot a sporting event, athletes are typically happy to have their photo taken. Lots of races I've been in, I wish there had been a photographer there as I have no evidence of having participated without any photos... Athletes aren't going to complain if the pictures aren't perfect, they accept that you're a volunteer, so it's a good way to build experience.

Also, move the subjects around. Take shots outside and inside, with different backgrounds and lighting. Take shots full body, upper body and maybe close ups. It gives you a better probability of getting that good photo. Buy a wedding magazine and look at the photos. Copy the good ideas!

Group photos can be tricky because it's hard to avoid having someone blinking in the shot. So, tell everyone to close their eyes, then 1, 2, 3 open! They'll likely blink once after opening their eyes, so wait a second and then click off a bunch of shots. Then do it again. People may complain a bit, but they will forget about it if the photos are good, they will never forget if they are the one blinking in the photo.

I think Uncle Vanya's suggestion to ask the guests to also take photos is a great idea. Otherwise, it's all on you.

The later production runs of the K1000 sometimes have a problem with the silvering on the prism. Unfortunately, they were built to a price in the later years of production.
It looks a lot like this:
K1000 prism question - PentaxForums.com

That K1000 isn't economical to fix.
I wouldn't give up on film cameras now you are interested though...

If you want an old manual focus camera, I suggest looking for a camera with automatic aperture. That just leaves you in charge of shutter speed and focus. Which is a lot easier than trying to master control of shutter speed, focus AND aperture all at the same time. Film can get expensive, so if you're learning it's discouraging to have all your shots badly exposed!

Maybe others could suggest a camera.

It's a macro lens, so there is enormous range of focus from less than 1cm all the way to infinity. It could focus more slowly because the lens was at one end of the range and the subject is at the other. Although if you're focused at 1m and your subject is at 2m, then it's pretty quick.

16-85 one-sided fuzziness in some images at the wide end

My guess is just pushing down too much on the shutter button. Rotation is greater on the right side than the left which is why left looks ok and blur increases to the right. Wide angle lens would exaggerate this action This also explains why other photo is good. The shake reduction also takes a moment to start working so keep an eye on the icon 👋for SR in the viewfinder and make sure its on when you click. 👍

Made the mistake of buying an Olympus TG-5. Terrible quality. Heaps of purple fringing and images are very soft. Think 10 year old mobile phone image quality. Also, the battery door catch doesn't lock. Wouldn't use in near water as it could open any time.

Optio e50 "built-in memory full"

The ultra will be the better card.

(The 10 in a circle means it's faster than the 4 in the circle on the blue card. The ultra will be fast enough to record video with your camera, the other card might have problems with video. Both will be OK for general photography.)

If you have any friends who are into photography, they may have a few of these sort of cards spare, having upgraded to larger or faster cards.

Optio E50 : Digital Compact Cameras | RICOH IMAGING
This page lists the card support and also says that there is no switching between built in memory and the card, it just happens automatically if there is no (supported) card in the camera.
Looks like some brands of SDHC cards are supported, up to 32Gb, other brands 16Gb.

You have probably got unlucky with that particular memory card. Try formatting the card and if that's not possible, time to try another.

This is a cool feature, not a bug. Your camera has built-in memory storage. The idea being you can still take a few pictures if you forgot your memory card or some other card problem happens. Like seeing bigfoot walk past just when you were swapping memory cards. Obviously, this is less of an issue now cards are so large.

I would choose the 67, so I could use the big mirror to signal at aircraft to get me off the desert island. Also the big lenses would be useful for starting a fire and the body would make a good hammer for building shelter.

Maybe try a reset of custom settings?

Topaz deNoise could make that a fair bit better. Just working with the low resolution image, it improved. I used these settings - standard model, everything set to zero, except colour noise reduction set to 100.
With the original file, it would improve more.

Are you sure that it's not 1/30th of a second selected instead of 30 seconds? I've done something like that before! Easily done at night when hard to see the camera.

k3 shutter issues

My K3 was hesitant focusing and missed a lot of shots on Saturday with DC18-135. The body and lens contacts looked totally clean to the eye. I did wipe with isopropyl 'anyway' and was surprised to see the cloth get black 'soot' on it. Difference was immediate. Very quick and snappy. I had imagined the dirty contacts would either make the lens work or not work. It turned out the lens could work but be unreliable.
So lesson was learnt. Cleaned all my lens and body contacts. Hopefully that's all that's needed here.

New life for old cameras

This might have made sense if they got it working twenty to 25 years ago, when people had to make the switch from film to digital, but that's happened already and now the world is filled with old digital (dslr) cameras sitting in the back of cupboards and available very cheaply. They have a body that operates remarkably similar to an old film camera. They also have a digital sensor already installed. Why not just use one of them?
