Still for sale. I'm not going to let it go for less than this; instead, I'm letting my brother borrow it until one of you bites. No sense in having it sit in the box!

I'm a big fan of Natural with saturation down one and contrast up one. I'm not happy with what Bright does with reds and skin tones, even with saturation reduced.

I also use Portrait, in this case with contrast reduced. (With contrast up, skin looks weird, which is contrary to the name of the setting, and I think that's even the case at its default. Much better down one.)

Updated with pictures. Might consider dropping price, but really, shipping with proper insurance takes a big chunk out of it. If you're in the Boston area and can meet for exchange, let's talk. :)

Also, on pricing: You should go with zbrueningsen's $260-shipped offer if it's still available. That's a ridiculously good deal. I'm sticking to this price, though. :)

Pictures! You can see here what I mean by "minor wear" — some of the black has worn off of the lens cap and hood, very slightly. (In the image, this is turned so that's most apparent — no surprises!) As noted, glass is flawless.

Hmmm. My three batteries seem to still be going fine, although next time I charge I'll be more careful about keeping count to see if it's lasting as long as expected.

In any case, glad I bought from Cheetah Light — I know I can trust Edward to make things good if there's a problem. I mentioned earlier in this thread that my second flash has a kind of loose fit for the remote, and until I gaffer-taped it, it tended to pop off when bumped. I told Edward about this and he insisted I send it back in for replacement. (I didn't — the tape solution works for me. But it's nice to know that there was the option.)

That would be fine, although it does currently use a lot of the wikidot features which would have to be translated.

Thanks! I put a ridiculous amount of work into it and I'm glad it's benefited other people.

I've put a lot of work over the years into my guide to P-TTL hot shoe flashes, but my current job does not give me the spare time. And not only are there new P-TTL flash models, there are several new options for manually-controlled flashes that still let you set the power from the camera body which I'd also like to include, in an ideal world....

Anyone interested in taking this over? (It's hosted on wikidot, by the way, so if you're familiar with that, that'd be a bonus, but it's pretty easy to learn. I've done some complicated things with templates but if you're reasonably geeky you can figure it out....)

And a slightly more expensive labeling, the Cheetah Light V850. If you are in the US, I think it's worth the few extra dollars for excellent customer service and US-based warranty service.

That's definitely a killer feature of this system. Makes a lot of perfectly good but no longer popular flashes suddenly much more useful.

Update: I got a second one, and the connection is definitely looser than the first. (Hooray, budget manufacturing!) The low-profile velcro fits, but because it is still a little too thick, actually makes it worse. So, gaffer tape it is.

That was a worry of mine too, but I've used mine a reasonable amount with quite a bit of moving around, and haven't actually ever knocked it out. He mentions velcro being too fat, but I have some of the low-profile stuff which I plan on trying if it becomes a problem. Or for that matter, tape. Not beautiful, but...

It could hardly be cheaper than 100$, though. Maybe it'll come in the future.
[/QUOTE]

Yeah, I wouldn't even mind if it were very close in price. I'd just like it to be compact enough that I wouldn't need to give a thought to throwing a second or third light in the camera bag. At 1¼ pounds with battery, the V850 isn't that. (The Nikon SB-R200 is a quarter of the weight (also with battery). It'd also be nicer to mount in creative locations, using a gorillapod or similar.

I just got mine. As I posted in another thread, I went with the Cheetah-branded version, the Cheetah Light V850. This is a little more expensive than the other versions, but you get US-based service (and I've heard that the customer service is great).

I agree with howieb that it'd be nice to have a way to go faster than dialing through all of the third-stops. It's also a little finicky to select groups — it's nice that there are so many, but honestly I think I'd rather a dial with fewer numbers on it. And, it'd be kind of cool if they had a smaller version for use as accent lighting (although I know that for some people, the Cheetah Light CL-360 is the "real" flash and this is the small version). And while I'm asking for things, it'd be nice if the transmitter was low-profile like some of the others.

Other than those little things, though, I'm very impressed. Lots of power, really quick refresh time (if you are using low enough power, it'll keep up with high-speed burst mode, which is kind of fun).

Slight correction here: the Metz 52 AF-1 has no "A" mode. You need to go up to the flagship 58 AF-2 for that.

Just a couple of notes on the Godox flash... You can also buy it as the "Cheetah Light V850" from https://www.cheetahstand.com/product-p/cl-v850-combo-a.htm. It's a little more expensive than the Godox brand ($189.95 with transmitter/receiver set), but you get US-based support and service (they say 1 day in-house turnaround). Alternately, you can also buy it more cheaply as the Neewer TT850 (about $99 from Amazon + $30 for the trigger/receiver), but as with Godox you need to send back to China for service.

Another thing that might be nice for some people is that the same trigger works with the much more powerful (and expensive) bare-bulb lithium-powered Cheetah Light CL-360. At almost $800, a little rich for my blood, but if you're interested in a more serious studio setup, that could be attractive.

Pentax-Ricoh Russia Answers: FF and Ricoh future

And I don't see any particular reason to expect that the Russian arm of the company is any more in the loop than the US one -- which is to say, not very. I don't know how things have changed with Ricoh, but for the past decade it's been clear that Pentax Japan holds all the engineering and design close, let alone future plans, while the regional subsidiaries are basically just distributors.

So, I'm not saying this isn't true, but I'm also taking it with a huge grain of salt.

Pentax wants to hear what you think?

This has been discussed at length. There are basically only two real market strategies (if you're doing something else, it's likely that what you have is actually not a strategy at all). They are: compete on cost, or compete on differentiation.

Your proposal is basically to compete on cost. This is very hard for a mass-market consumer good when there are bigger competitors. It is also roughly what Pentax attempted with the K100D and K110D. These were great little cameras, priced under $400, and easily fit an adjusted-for-the-time version of your list.

Unfortunately, this did not result in rousing success for Pentax.

New battery charger D-BC90P and new battery D-LI90P - why?
Posted By mattdm

I asked Pentax support and got this typical non-answer from Randall S:

The D-Li90(E) is a newer version of the original D-Li90 battery and the price
variation is probably a reflection of the increased cost to manufacturer the E
version. The specifications and performance should be the same with either
battery.

Since I specifically noted that the specifications were the same, this is basically the answer I could have gotten from a random person on the street.
