What frustrations have you faced trying to video with your Pentax DSLR?

I tried recording video on my K1 and K3 and really didn't like the experience - I never tried on K3ii or KP at all. When I started doing video more seriously and needed something short/wide I gave up on Pentax entirely.

I got a Panasonic G7 and a Viltrox adapter (similar to the metabones adapters, but way cheaper) for Nikon F - works like a charm at producing quality (enough) 4K footage. The advantage of this rig is that the entire setup can be had for under 400.00 in totality which is basically the cost of a lens.

btw: I got a Pentax to Nikon adapter w/optics in an effort to economize, thinking that for video it would be okay? no way! absolutely hosed the footage let alone images - total garbage. The viltrox adapter (and metabones as well) has glass, but it decreases the size of the output significantly to make it fit M4/3 which actually mildly increases sharpness or at least doesn't harm it much.

Your milage may vary!

Thank you for the replies and input, I appreciate it, these have been good batteries to me in the D200, if it's electrically fine, they look/size identical, battery is a battery?

I shoot a D200 in addition to my (recently acquired) K1 M2, I of course have a gigantic battery mess with chargers and rats nests of cables and such and so, while rearranging my office I noticed I was missing a Kaster D200 replacement battery and I searched high and low, turned out it had been inside my K1 for days and I'd been using it.

I feel like an idiot, but then I searched around and it seems aberrant that it's working at all? - Nikon battery in Pentax cam? I guess both use L90's ?

In any event, I won't be running my K1 on these batteries, I was just curious if anyone here knew anything about this, I searched and found conflicting stuff about this issue.

Thanks in advance.

For me, it's a tie between three lenses:

Tokina 28-80 AT-X Pro 2.8
SMC Pentax 35mm Macro Limited F2.8
Sigma Art 18-35mm F1.8

Those three lenses give an insane amount of versatility and are my favs by far.

I recommend the Sigma 18-35 1.8 and the Pentax SMC 35mm Macro 2.8

Apart from those two, my favorite macro lens is the the Sigma 50mm 2.8 (not an aps-c lens, but its awesome and cheap)

Also, Tokina 28-80 2.8 the AT-X Pro, absolutely awesome lens!

There are so many! Pentax SMD FA 50mm 1.4 - I know, not APS-C, but, who cares!

Looks like it's been a while since anyone posted here! - If this is the wrong section, by all means admins, please move this to where it ought to be, I was unsure where to post this but after searching for this lens on the site and not finding anything, I wanted to share a bit.

Komura 28mm F2.5 w/all metal hood in Pentax-K

Here is the lens and a few up-close samples taken with it of my dogs on a KS-2.

The reason this lens is on a KS-2 is because its aperture does not function on the other cams I tried, so I'm leaving it where it sits, I tested it on my K10D and K20D and it worked on those as well but no on my K3 or K5 and I have not tested on K1 yet.

This lens is realistically an F4 lens, at 2.5 it gives everything a 1980's halo/soft effect, some might like it, I do not and so its an F4 to me - unfortunately, but, at f4 it appears pretty sharp and it gets better from there from what I've seen so far.

This lens has a ring you can see in the images in front of the aperture ring, if this is turned clockwise (facing the camera) it will decouple the lens in half, or, more accurately the actual lens will decouple from this PK rear section - I have no idea what system this is, if anyone knows, by all means, tell me, I've never seen it before, very odd, nearly broke the lens because it wasn't tightened down well on mine and I thought it was a function of some kind and turned it - oops - good thing I'm quick!.

Edit: Images of dogs are 100% crops taken straight from camera jpegs, no editing, natural picture settings - from K-S2

Images of lens were taken with a K20D and a kit 18-55 - My benchtop ebay camera!

I picked up a K20D because I saw one for sale with a 50mm F1.4 FA on its nose and the price was so cheap I said - why not?, so I got it.

It almost makes me upset at my old K7, I avoided the K20D for years thinking it was as bad as the K7 and it turns out its not as noisy.

Enjoying owning mine, this poor undead beetle, his ghost is gonna haunt me but, gotta use him for testing purposes and a quarter.

Great to hear, look forward to seeing you put it to use here. I was considering the 2.8 as well and then I saw the review where the angry photographer said the added element detracts from the vintage look - not sure if this is true or not at all. I would love to hear what owners of both say, but it steered me to the 3.5 and I was shocked how well it's performed.

If I may make one suggestion in terms of f mounts, You may already own this lens and if so pardon my redundant advice. I believe the best value (of them all) in F's is the MF Nikkor 55mm F3.5 Macro and for the stuff you post, I think you would really like it. You can swing one for about 75.00 or so, razor sharp, great contrast, amazing color. Manual focus lens, amazing at any distance, I find mine loves ccd sensors too. The lens goes down to 1:1 and with the add-on extension they made for it it goes down past 1:1 by almost double I believe, still one of my fav macro lenses and I'm sure you could do it real justice. Just make sure you don't get the pre-ais version, it'll smush the metering tab and ruin the camera!.

This poor beetle, I found him thinking he was dead, then he ran off and was later found (and photographed), then he was let go, now RIP - but easier to photograph. Oh and a pic of the cat. Taken on D200 105mm F2.5 Vivitar and a 50mm F1.8 of the cat.

Oh yeah, gotta be real careful with them, no allowance for the metering tab, they'll ruin the cam, glad yours did!. Will be interesting to compare the mighty 645D to the S5, how is the shooting experience?

That is a really neat blast from the past, I dunno if mine is a CCD or not but I have an ancient HP photosmart cam of a similar vintage and I tried it recently and it still works too!.

Decided to crack out the K10D with the 50mm SMC Macro F4 M42 mounted on a helicoid extension, shots are handheld at F22 I believe, here's a couple results from that:

Sorry for the dinged up beetle, he was found dead in my dogs water bowl and mysteriously disappeared from my workbench after being cleaned and placed there, turned out he was very much alive and would only pose for the short while before being returned to nature - in the meantime I saved him the trouble of another cleaning.

I for one find the roll off really cool in these images, it's half the fun of the complex look projector lenses create. Really interesting. I imagine for video these would have some very unique implementations.

Snapped a few with my new (ancient) M42 SMC 50mm F4, I didn't take anything remarkable but I did want to post one to show the razor sharpness of this lens. Thanks to everyone who convinced me to buy it and it's 100mm big brother, these are two lenses I will keep for life. On and this is taken on my Nikon D200.

I saw elsewhere someone who had one of those and I think they posted results, I tried to find it, but I think its a very good lens to adapt. Good luck on your journey!.
