Probably a drive-specific thing.

Checked the disk for issues and that didn't help (the tool didn't find any issues). Other tools did find stuff to fix but that didn't resolve the issue. Btw, this issue happens on two different windows 10 computers, so I'm inclined to conclude this is disk-specific.

DCU 5.9.5 on Windows 10, external USB 3.0 HDD (a 5.4krpm one). And this is not "slow" as in "annoying". This is "slow" as in it never responds to me even waiting for 10 minutes... I guess I'll just copy files to a local disk for edits as that works alright.

I've got my photos stored on an external drive. Using the DCU 5, I cannot access any of them. The program simply hangs and freezes while trying to read the drive. Does it do this for any of you?

Thanks all. Yeah, given the weight and better optical performance, I think I will upgrade regardless of the AF. Since I manage with the AF on the FA 50mm Macro, I think I'll be satisfied as long as it's not worse.

To all of you offering helpful advice for macro shooting, thanks. I'm not new to macro. I've been shooting macro on various systems for years now. Not looking for tips on how to do macro.
I'm merely asking whether the AF on the D FA 100mm AW is better than with FA 100mm. ---------- Post added 02-08-23 at 05:20 AM ----------
Yeah, I get by anyway. I would probably get the AW lens even if the AF on it isn't particularly better cause I'm using the FA 50mm right now and it works for me 90% of the time. With the 100mm I just don't love the torque it has when it misses focus and starts racking. I really feel that in my wrist when I hold the camera at an awkward angle one-handed.

Maybe I should note that I'm on K-1 and use AF-C. (And possibly have unrealistic expectations from my Pentax gear.)
I hold a flash in one hand, and camera + lens in the other. So in that setup it tends to be on the heavy side.

I own a FA 100mm macro lens. I like it but it's a bit heavy, and the limiter does not help as well as I hoped. AF is a bit erratic and frequently misses the obvious subject. I'm wondering if there's anyone that uses the new 100mm AW lens with AF for macro, and whether the AF on the lens is good.

I second the suggestion to go with the IR remote. A bought the one sold on Amazon, and it works like a charm. And yes, it's easy to lose because it's so tiny! It does have an attachment point for a lanyard.
On K-1, you will find IR ports both back and front, so you can trigger from either side, and you can also bounce the beam off walls in a pinch.

Can anyone tell me if flash is supposed to trigger when using an Pentax IR remote camera controller to release the shutter with a delay? The flash reliably fires when releasing with the IR remote without a delay, but with 3s delay it does not fire for me.
FWIW, I'm using a Godox X2t-p wireless remote on the camera to trigger the flash.

Heh, we can never be happy with what we have, can we? :D For me, the last thing I'm missing in my glass collection are a decent telephoto zoom (looks like FA* 80-200 would be too heavy for me, but maybe an 80-320; I don't need it for birds and critters, just some landscape and walk-around) and a ultra-wide shift lens (I'm eyeballing the Laowa 20mm shift, but it's sooo expensive!). And I wish I could find some affordable high-power flash with trailing curtain support. I have to admit that with Nikon it's so much simpler to find anything as stuff is readily available at most price points.
For me it's not so much the body features per se, but what the ecosystem unlocks. Even if a K-1 III came out with AF that makes Canon users want to switch, no noise in a Bic-lighter-lit scene, always bang-on auto exposure, cine-levels of video features, and a 80Mpx sensor, costing less than $2000, there'd still be reasons to prefer Nikon just for the extra glass and accessories options. :))))

That's why I said "at least some fun". ;) Each device has something it's good at, some more than others. I still haven't found one that would do everything for me, but I guess a Fuji X100 with the performance of Nikon Z9, Olympus' IBIS and color rendition of a Pentax would be stretching it a bit too far. 😁

I can't remember a single photography device with which I haven't had at least some fun. I've had as much fun on an Xperia Z1 Compact as I have had on a full-frame DSLR. But each device gives me different kinds of fun, and there's none that gives me all of those kinds.

D750 was replaced by the D780, which some claim is the "most refined Nikon DSLR ever made".

From what I've seen, not really. I mean, let's say the claimed improvement is 2 stops. Well, I get color blotches in the shadow areas at base ISO on E-M1X, so 2 stops is not much. And I don't think it's 2 stops improvement. From what I've read, it's more along the lines of 1/2 stop. I think m43 is maxed out as it is as far as low-light goes.
I think most reviewers have very small hands. If you've got average or larger hands, you'd be disappointed by the grip. It's one of those "slide your pinky under the body" type of deals. Having said that, glass up to around 300g, it's probably not going to be much of an issue anyway as the body itself is not heavy.
X-H1 has a cult following and I think it's even stronger now that X-H2S has switched to a DSLR-style command layout.

I've used Olympus cameras which are well-known for their IBIS (a few levels above anything else, imo). I think for kids photos I'd take high ISO performance of the Fujis over IBIS every time (comparable to Pentax K-1 if not better, as K-1 tends to color-blotch). Having said that, Fuji X-S10 has both an ok IBIS (about the same as Pentax K series) and the great ISO perf. It's also reasonably light and has a flippy screen if that's your thing. No OVF though.

Well, I think Fujifilm X100 series might be the perfect camera for you then. X100S (16Mpx), second generation, is great value, X100F (24Mpx) is even better but holds its price so it costs used as much as I've paid for it new! It's a fixed lens camera with a 35mm equivalent F2 lens mated to an Fuji's X-Trans sensor. It's great for people as it has face-detection, reasonably quick AF, and can shoot people in any light. It's color rendition is optimized for people, and AWB is amazing. Cranking the ISO all the way up to 12800 on the F is no issue, and I think S can take it up to 6400 no problem (I haven't used the latter myself). Unlike most other sensors, cranking the ISO up only results in minor loss of sharpness and no color blotching. I just set it to auto ISO and snap around. The noise is very pleasant, reminiscent of film grain (though, of course, not the same). It's a small camera, easy to hold with one hand, and store in a larger pocket or just carry it on a wrist strap. It has a hybrid OVF/EVF combination, where the OVF is a range-finder-style viewing window but with digital aids for focus and framing. Oh, and I know this is petty, but it's a sexy-looking camera.
Here's a street snap at ISO 25600 F4 1/40s with X100F (I don't normally shoot this high, but just showing that you get usable images even with such high ISO): |
