Camera charging in national parks

Dear forum members,

I will travel through various national parks in the united states over the upcoming three weeks. I will visit Yellowstone, Arches, Bryce Canyon, Zion, and Grand Canyon. I am very excited, it will be my first trip through national parks in america. I will bring my Pentax K-70 with me and will travel with a rented campervan (Ford T-350), and now I am wondering how I will be able to charge my Pentax batteries.

The Campervan only provides a cigarette lighter plug. Is the voltage here sufficient to charge up the battery of my camera? I know that I would need a USB Adaper, and that a mobile phone can be charged, but I just wonder if it also works with bigger camera batteries.

I would appreciate your experiences!

Thank you so much in advance,
Lukas

So after a few days to think about all your input, I have to say that the combination of the FA 70-210mm lens + 1,4 teleconverter is very interesting to me. My kit then would have roughly the same focal length as the 55-300 PLM, while offering better overall IQ.

But once more I would like to ask for your experience with my following line of thought: The teleconverter changes the f-stop from F4.0 to F5.6.... So that means that the biggest advantage of the 70-210mm lens (the better performance under low light circumstances) is more or less gone, right? So at the end of the day I would be paying 4x more for a combination which offers almost no significant advantages over the 55-300 PLM? (Maybe a bit sharper images overall?)

I want to add that the 55-300 PLM is F6.3 at 300mm zoom, so there is still a tiny difference to F5.6 on the 70-210mm, but would it be noticable? I have no idea if thatīs considered to be a real difference at all.

So do you agree with my hypothesis, or would you say that the overall performance and IQ still would make a great difference in favour of the FA 70-210mm?

Thanks again!

Oh, yes I understand. I thought because the 55-300mm lens is designed for APS-C digital cameras, that the given focal length is therefore equivalent to the FOV. Thanks for clarifying! Thats of course a positive argument for the 55-300mm PLM.

Wow! Thank you so much for all the input, opinions and sharing your experiences! I would like to respond to some of your arguments and discuss them more in detail:

Many of you noted, that the 70-210mm lens would not be long enough for my needs. Maybe I am missing a point, but to my understanding, the Pentax K-70 with itīs APS-C Sensor would push the focal length to approximately 105-320mm. So it would be around the same length as the 55-300 PLM, or is there a misinterpretation on my side?

Secondly, I see that many of you also would recommend the 60-250mm lens by Pentax. I am sure it is a great lens and I read a couple of articles about it, but standing at 1500$ it is another 300$ more than the 70-210mm and I think this price would be to high for me. Maybe I could save another 300$ extra and spend it on the 60-250mm, but it would only be worth it for me if it is head and shoulders above every other lens in this comparison.

And lastly, my takeaways from your suggestions are that the 55-300mm PLM is the more versatile lens, because it goes down to 55mm and can therefore of course make wider shots. This point to me is not that important, as I always can switch back to my 16-85mm. Maybe I will get tired of switching all the time as some of you mentioned, but at the moment I feel ok with it.
Further takeaways from the 55-300mm PLM: it is overall a very good lens. It is fast, reliable, sharp and easy to handle. But if we talk about pure image quality, the 70-210mm is the superior lens - am I right with this statement? Also autofocus speed seems to be better on the 70-210mm.

But overall I have to say, I am very surprised with how satisfied all of you are with the 55-300mm PLM. I expected the coversation to be much more in favour of the 70-210mm lens.

Also I want to thank you for your hints regarding the national parks, I really appreciate it. And Sterby, thank you for clarifying my "pro lens on regular body" dilemma, I am relieved that it is not a problem at all.

Dear Forum-members,

I currently own a Pentax K-70 together with my beloved "HD PENTAX-DA 16-85mm f/3,5~5,6 ED DC WR" lens.

As I will visit multiple national parks in the united states in a couple of months (Yellowstone, Arches, Bryce Canyon, Grand Canyon, Zion, etc.), I want to buy a zoom lens for better wildlife and nature photography.

Iīve been researching for quite some time now and for me it comes down to either the "HD PENTAX-D FA 70-210mm F4 ED SDM WR" for 1200$ or the "HD Pentax-DA 55-300mm F4.5-6.3 PLM WR RE" for less than half the price. Iīve read many reviews (also here in the forum) and am torn between those two lenses. I am fully aware that the 70-210mm lens is designed for full frame cameras, but according to the in depth reviews it works very fine with APS-C as well.

I am simply wondering if my Pentax K-70 can use the full potential of the 70-210mm lens. Or would it be wasted money in your opinion and I should go with the cheaper 55-300mm lens? If the 70-210mm lens is still significantly better on APS-C Systems, I would be willing to pay the higher price.

I would really appreciate your opinions and experiences on both lenses.

Thank you very much in advance,
Lukas
