As the owner of the Pentax-M 28mm f2.0... If you are here and you are even thinking of passing this lens up,I respectfully suggest you just buy it while you can.

The best of the era, probably the best lens I have.

Sorry to post a tire kicker reply.

Build quality isn't as important as image quality, but the build on the nicer A lenses is no problem for me.
It does have the same less metal than the M-Series aperture ring mechanism as the other Pentax-A lenses – lucky for me I only use my 'A' glass on my K3 and as such it is not a major concern for me. The M glass is for film, and my M-28/2 ends up on my MX most days.

Definitely know what you are referring to though - I also have an A/50/1.7 in my Pentax K3 kit that has an inconsistent aperture ring, but I have found as long as I keep them in the 'A' position everything is fine. I don't think they are as plasticky on their nicer lenses though (like on my A/50/1.4 the ring is less janky than either the A/50/2 or A/50/1.7 according to my anecdotal report) – even my A/28/2.8 (which I sold immediately along with it's M-series compadre as soon as I got the M-28/2) had a more plastic feeling aperture ring.

The Konica 40mm f1.8 was my go-to standard lens on Fuji for awhile... I love that lens so much, I wish I wanted to use my A7R3 more so I could experience the true 40mm focal length and that amazing lens. One day I will find a cheap full frame mirrorless camera that is fun to use on the street and that will be the lens for me on that puppy. Until that day, I only bust it out once in awhile since I sold my XT3 and came back to Pentax.

One of my favorite vintage lens Youtubers did an excellent review comparing the 40mm 1.8 with the Voigtländer 40mm 1.4 and it did very well against it. Somehow, the price hasn't really gone up on the Konica yet, but it will eventually hit $200. Haha.

Ignorance is bliss... Have you ever compared the Konica 40mm 1.8 to the Pentax 40mm offerings?

---------- Post added 09-09-22 at 01:16 PM ----------

Detail, color, bokeh, handling, build quality – the A35/2 beats the 40mm Limited in all of those areas.

How many Pentax lenses do you own?

---------- Post added 09-09-22 at 11:46 AM ----------

I will be posting some samples, yes. It was the same experience I had switching from the Pentax-M 28mm f2.8 to the Pentax-M 28mm f2.0 on my MX. Immediately noticed it is a better hunk of glass.

Currently I am trying reeeeally hard to keep my X100V (I am thinking of sellng it now while the price is up, buying a GR3 to try out while I wait for that new XH2 sensor to hit the X100 line). If I keep using my K3 now I might as well sell it, because 10 months of winter is coming and the X100V is not a winter camera. Haha

K3 Classic. Haven't tried comparing them on the Sony A7R(you ever going to use me again?)3...

---------- Post added 09-09-22 at 11:21 AM ----------

I have come to this conclusion almost immediately; I bought both of them this week. The green-ring 40mm Limited is wonderful for what it is, but I think I would take the M/40mm 2.8 over the OG Limited on the street – at that focal length do I really need the AF on APS-C for street photography most days? That said, I wouldn't be mad if I could shoot the Konica Hexanon 40mm 1.8 over the Pentax-M 40mm f2.8 on my K3.

In my (vast) experience with Pentax vintage lenses (I recycle cameras as a hobby and have tried a lot out over the years), it is a real ignorance is bliss situation until you try the F2.0 versions – for example, I thought the M/28/2.8 was a blast – I loved that lens – for 2 years it lived on my Fuji X-E1. Then I was given a very good price on the Pentax-M 28mm f2.0... That was when it dawned on me – the f2.0 version was so much better – those were lenses made to compete with the best in the world and the pro-sumer f2.8s just don't hold a candle to the nicer offerings.

There is nothing wrong with the Limited, just as there is really nothing wrong with many of the cheapest options Pentax has ever offered... The Pentax-M 50mm f2 is such a fantastically sharp lens and it has better microcontrast than the 50mm 1.4 from the same era, but technically the 50mm f1.4 delivers more delicious results. Naturally once you hear about that lavishness in the next room, of course you want to have a slice for yourself...

---------- Post added 09-09-22 at 11:27 AM ----------

Yes. I own both.

I also own about 30 other lenses in my permanent collection, and I have tested almost every lens Pentax made during what we would now consider the vintage era. I still use some of them regularly.

The A-35mm f2 will probably not come off of my K3 very often in the future.

---------- Post added 09-09-22 at 11:32 AM ----------

Oh sorry – I was pretty wrecked last night when I posted the thread, haha...

It is the green version, OG 40mm Limited.

I definitely understand your point – maybe in the next few days I will upload some of my test comparison shots but in all likelihood I will shoot my X100V now until winter arrives. Generally when the temperature up here in Canada drops below -0°C I put the X100V away and bust out the K3, but I was looking at the shots from the K3 and I almost sold it yesterday!! I have the 35mm f2 on the K3 now, I could die a happy woman with that setup.

I haven't yet tried the Pentax Limited 35mm Macro, but I might be able to trade for one in town and then I am sure that it will be sharper than the A35/2... But will it have the handling? Is the relatively small difference in IQ and overall sharpness worth it for that sweet manual focus experience?

---------- Post added 09-09-22 at 11:42 AM ----------

I just can't describe how perfect it feels on the K3.

The experience of using that pinnacle of Pentax engineering from a bygone era that was the last stop on the line before AF came along and photography became so much easier in some ways (yet so much more complex in others)... It feels like perfection and the images make me want to stop 'chimping' altogether. If the meter is in the middle and the subject is in focus, there is no reason to lower the camera and confirm anything.... The quality washes over you and it gradually becomes unnecessary to check because already know you are shooting gold out of your fingertips. Haha

The Pentax A 35mm f2 is waaaaaaaaaaaay better than the Pentax 40mm f2.8 Limited...

The two lenses aren't even in the same stratosphere.

Those are fantastic shots. Astounding.
I think that Bee macro photography is essentially photojournalism at this point.

Someone is selling one of those AF adapters locally and I am very tempted after seeing these shots. Does it work well with wider lenses also?

Oh that is totally how I felt also. Until I got the K3 I didn't need that aperture control on the camera – also the IQ on the Vivitar 24mm f2 RL is just slightly sharper and has less field curvature than the SMC Pentax 24mm f2.8. That said, there is NOTHING bad to say about either lens.

---------- Post added 08-23-22 at 11:00 AM ----------

The Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 is a fantastic lens. I have only used it for Canon EF-S.

---------- Post added 08-23-22 at 11:03 AM ----------

I always have the 'Early K' version on my bike camera, the Ricoh XR7. This is probably one of the most underdog lenses in human history.

---------- Post added 08-23-22 at 11:04 AM ----------

If you have a mirrorless camera, do yourself a favor and go buy the Konica Hexanon 40mm f1.8.

Then come back here with tears of joy in your eyes and thank me...

---------- Post added 08-23-22 at 11:06 AM ----------

I will run to the local Mom and Pop Camera Store and but the Sigma I-Series 50mm f2 (or 1.8) when it is announced. Not even waiting for the reviews.

I miss Amsterdam so much. (Is that Amsterdam?)

Best choice for forever lens so far...

---------- Post added 08-22-22 at 06:32 PM ----------

Maybe it is my copy, maybe it is because I am using it on the K3 mostly (but it seems solid on my A7R3 also), but my RL Edition is substantially better than the SMC Pentax 24mm f2.8 (which is very close to the A and the M in design).

---------- Post added 08-22-22 at 06:36 PM ----------

There is an elusive Pentax-M 20mm f4 on Kijiji up in Whitehorse, Yukon (Canada) if anyone wants to message the seller... I can't afford it but I will be very jelly of whoever buys that puppy.

Here is the link: smc PENTAX-M 20mm F4 | Cameras & Camcorders | Whitehorse | Kijiji

I would consider that but part of the draw of basing my winter street photography rig around this lens and a K3 classic is that it is low cost ‐ as such it is APS-C and although it is only 3mm, that seems like it is too close on the crop.

I appreciate the links... This forum has a lot of information, I can't seem to decide if I should go with tbe DA Limited 40mm (in green) or the HD DA Limited 40mm (Red) – that or should I just get the 35mm Macro? Such a difficult decision.

Which 40mm f2.8 Limted should I buy for my K3?

Does anyone own both?

Is there any noticeable difference in image quality?

Can the first version handle higher megapixel cameras? (I really like the green accents to match my K3, but if the new coatings take better photos that is more important to me)

Are there any non-obvious differences between the two versions?

Will Pentax ever release a WR version?

These are my questions...

The only time I held the K1 it had an A/50/1.4 on it and that camera was perfect. I had sold my K5 and I ended up selling my Fuji XT3 for a K3 and an X100V after that experience...
