I agree with Rondec but for me, at least, it is not just that it is full frame. The camera is just so well designed for photography. It feels good in the hand. We can be confident that it is reasonably sturdy and reliable. The controls are well laid out and make quickly available almost any setting we wish to make. I owned and very much enjoyed using the Sony A9 which is as fast in operation as claimed. However, I was never as comfortable using it in the field as I am with the K-1. We give up a little in tracking focus but gain so much in user satisfaction and confidence with the K-1. I love it.

D-FA 28-105mm lens vs. older FA 28-105mm lenses. Anyone?

I started photographing test shots to get an idea how the older FA 28-105 f/3.2-4.5 lens will compare against the newer D-FA 28-105mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. Here are my initial impressions.

Both lenses are sharp in the center. The D-FA gets a little sharper a little faster when stopping down from wide open to f/8 and the D-FA is a little sharper at its sharpest than the FA. Comparing the circular areas of sharpness I would say the D-FA definitely has a larger circle of sharpness compared to the FA.

The D-FA is much sharper in the edges and corners than the FA. Thankfully, the FA sharpens up a bit when stopping down but it won't reach the same level of sharpness as the D-FA in the same area at the same f-stop.

The FA is slightly faster than the D-FA but the FA is too soft at wide open for my pixel peeping pleasure. For something small like a 4"x6" print or maybe something for the web then wide open is probably plenty good.

The FA lens vignettes more than the D-FA.

Colors are outstanding on both!

I photographed sand to get an idea of how the lenses resolve detail. The distance was about 3 feet, or 1 meter. This was my "up close" scene. I also photographed the view from my backyard which includes some hills, the neighbor's roof, and some trees. This was my "infinity" scene. Now that I am beginning to understand how the lenses behave I think I can come up with some better test shot scenes to photograph. Then I will try posting some samples.

The FA is not disappointing lens at all, especially when you consider it's age, where it came from, and today's going price for it. eBay seems to have them priced anywhere from $90 to $130 and hoods seem to be selling separately nowadays. I used the lens on my K-30 for a good long while and I was very happy with the images it produced. It is certainly a viable alternative for those looking to buy a lower cost lens that covers the 28mm to 105mm focal lengths. The D-FA is much more stout and may be more future-proof with its DC motor. Lets not forget the updated coating and optics too. You definitely get more when you pay more. Do you get 4x more when you pay 4x more? That's an individual decision.

More later!

don't know if this would have helped in your situation but I have registered my gear with Lenstag in an attempt to help with recovery should I suffer theft of any of it:

Lenstag - Protect your camera equipment, images and help make the world safer for photography on iOS, Android and the web.

what is Lenstag -

" Lenstag is a recently-launched, free online service for iOS, Android, and the web that records the serial numbers of your lenses, cameras, flashes, laptops and anything else in a secure, private registry before they are stolen.

If one or more of your items disappear, you can immediately flag the missing items as stolen which creates a public web page, quickly indexed by search engines. The serial number is then discoverable by a single Google search (example: ‘75165 lenstag’) or by checking the Lenstag apps. Thanks to Lenstag’s growing relationships with the pawn shop industry and law enforcement, the exchange of money for that stolen item becomes much more difficult akin to trying to sell a stolen vehicle. The idea behind this service is that if everyone gets into the habit of checking serials numbers online before purchasing used equipment, it will become harder and harder over time to peddle hot items and thieves will get arrested when they try to pawn them. Think of it like a DMV for camera equipment. The more people who register their gear, the more effective the registry system becomes. . . . "

I am one of five siblings now geographically spread. Our families get together about once a year around Christmas.
When you add kids and grandkids there's far too many people to buy decent gifts for all.
About twenty years ago my sister suggested the adults do "Chinese Christmas". It's not PC but something akin to "Chinese Fire Drill".
We have been doing this every year since.

Each participant brings an unmarked wrapped gift of some set approximate value.
All draw numbers. #1 chooses a wrapped gift. Once chosen any wrapped gift must be opened.
#2 can choose a wrapped gift or can steal #1's gift, who then chooses another wrapped gift.
Here's where it gets interesting. #3 can choose a wrapped gift or steal from #1 or #2,
who can then choose another wrapped gift or steal a gift if it's one that was not just stolen from them.

And on it goes through all number holders, until someone opens the last wrapped gift.
Afterwards trades are encouraged.

Choosing your own wrapped gift initially is forbidden but you are allowed - nay encouraged - to steal it back once you are stolen from - the fun is in the stealing!
It doesn't work for small groups, but with enough people - and enough alcohol - it can literally go on for hours.

If you decided to distribute a pot of gold to everyone, someone would still find something to complain about. People are like that, and some simply need to be ignored.

Why do DA lenses stop down fully on pre-A cameras?

Thank you. But the DA lenses do have a 'stop down indicator' - why would they need one if the cameras they are designed to be used on don't have a 'stop down coupler'?

K-5 metering with K and M lenses?

I have taken Bende8's data and plotted it on my chart.

Sorry for the messy appearance, but this shows the basic results

It is quite interesting, in that it shows the K20D exposure to be very close to the same as K10D, with the K5D much improved.

Bende8, one thing I see with the A50/1.2 is that it appears the aperture control is inaccurate at F22,

The 58mm seems to have a couple of different issues, but appears to meter similar to the A50 in manual mode. In automatic it appears the aperture mechanism is no where near as linear and accurate as the A50.

Overall, I would say the K5 meters almost as good as the *istD, with only a slight dip at large apertures, and does meter better than the K7D.

The K20D test really validates the method, as it has long been suspected the K10D and K20D share metering issues, here, with 2 different cameras and testers and lenses, we come up with almost identical test results between an A50/1.2 in manual, and a K50/1.4 and K20 vs K10.
