K3ii weather seal at power button failed

There may still be water inside. You can get a properly-sealed box, put in desiccant, then monitor the humidity, if you have a humidity dial/display, and watch the humidity go down to safe levels. I do this every time I expose a weather-sealed camera in substantial/torrential rain.

Just bought a Pentax K200D

Congratulations on the purchase @Wiltshireborn. The K200D is my first entry into Pentax DSLRs ~2 years ago. I was just curious because, upon looking at Flickr samples, I noticed how Pentax images are so real and distinct vs any other outputs, regardless of the brand. I got completely absorbed into the system.

I have Eneloop Pros on my other devices but on the K200D, before giving it to one of my brothers, I used it with Energizer 2350mAH rechargeables. When paired with the 18-55mm WR, got 770 RAW + JPEG shots per charge.

Eco and Super Tank Printers

I do have two 4-colour business printers. One is an Epson EcoTank and another is an HP cartridge.

For reference, we in the West have just had these ink-tanks much more recently than in developing countries. They had ink tanks for around 20-25 years already. Epson's L-series printers which always use pigment inks for all four colours have been around for a very long time and they are still pretty much alive today.

Make sure to keep whatever printer turned on because they automatically do maintenance cycles. Many users would complain about a blocked gallery but almost 100% of the time, they turn off their printers when not in use, not letting the printer do their maintenance cycles.

This really depends on the driver, paper, print settings, viewing distance, etc. Out-of-the-box, the HP can fare better than the Epson (Pigment black + Dye CMY) for print quality but if the settings are understood and properly configured, the Epson prints way better than the HP.

Initially, the Epson would have a green cast, which is common with their pigment ink blacks. After a few settings, the Epson would outclass the HP. The Epson can handle even sub-standard glossy papers whereas the HP would already smudge the darker hues.

I am only talking about JPEG prints. When printing on Darktable, it's a different story. The Epson can truly squeeze out Pentax's Natural colours. With their Ultra Glossy papers, it's going to be very hard to find the difference between the 4-colour one and their 6-colour photo printer, when printing A4, of course.

Viewing distance is important here. An analogue final product, like a print, doesn't really invite the viewer to pixel-peep or, should I say, dot-peep. For around 10-15 years now, consumer printers are getting more and more resolution for basic photo prints. Colour-shift is handled by many printers properly today as long as the correct rendering intent is selected. A 4-colour printer can outdo a 6-colour one on the same medium if the 6-colour one has the wrong rendering intent.

With the Epson, B&W prints are best handled by the monochrome mode as it will render light and shadow really well with just the pigment black ink.

I got lured by the HP Smart Tank because of their more business-oriented features but the lack of a maintenance cartridge/waste ink pad is a deal-breaker for me. I like my printers to last.

I am mainly interested in BOOTPARA, still, I haven't done any checking yet. The person who made a custom HUD for his K-3 III hasn't replied yet.

I am not on that section yet, haha.

No access to it from NZ, definitely. With that, you can even tweak imaging parameters, even the ADC. I am not sure if that part is open-source, but the tool is a bypass, anyway.

I see some random posts on Github but not a proper forum dedicated to open-source camera software yet. Well, if there is it can only be Pentax cameras and Leica M8.

No idea. Probably the sequence is used as the K-3 III also uses a Sony sensor. There is a chance that the module is shared by all cameras that use Sony sensors just to save coding time.

Thanks for posting this. Yes, I don't remember when the K10D has been open-sourced but I remember overlooking about it on this forum.

We have a K10D here but it's still being actively used by another family member. Cheers.

At the moment, the only ones that are easily found are on Github but they are just modules inside the firmware. I will ask the one who was rather successful in adding an extra HUD module in his K-1 how he was able to do such. I am thinking that the engineers may have posted the source code in alternative repositories with their project name, instead of saying "Pentax K-3 III firmware." That's not unusual.

Ghidra is also very useful in this case.

We can see the AF modules, wireless connection parameters, etc. on Github but compiling everything to a firmware that the camera can recognise is tricky.

I will spend more time in this in the future as I got inspired by the HUD and AF speed modes that others have created. They don't reply quickly though. Sometimes, I get replies after 7 weeks!

From firmware v1.60, the K-3 III has been open source. I am not sure when it started with the K-1s. I haven't really started viewing it but I really like how they made that decision.

Good to know. I haven't yet seen a KF firmware on a K-70. I am not sure if the K-70's firmware is open-source. If it is, it would be nice to view the verification arguments.

I will see how much I can get into the K-3 III's firmware. Some members here have already viewed the firmware but I haven't seen that much mods.

Perhaps we can create a custom firmware-specific thread in the future. I will quote your name just in case there is progress in this area from my part. Cheers.

We have the same flash module that came with the SFX and that looks like an additional click mechanism for the tilt. Does the strobe still work and click when you tilt it? Cheers.

Welcome to the forum!

I have seen some but mostly with regard to AF modes. My brother has a K-1 and I will see if I can convince him to test out a new AF mode out of it. He probably won't allow me.

If I am going to have a K-1, K-1 II or K-3 III in the future, I will surely test out some mods. I am after programming the HUD to have a different layout. If I have a K-1, I plan to increase the buffer size, as well. If the K-1 and K-1 II have the same AF motor, I plan to over-volt the K-1 motor, as well, but that's a bit too risky for the motor.

Do you have some sort of a repository for some Pentax firmware mods in Japan? Cheers.

The K-1, K-1 II and K-3 III have open-source firmware. It's one thing that I like about them. We won't see that in other camera companies, particularly Sony, Canon and NIkon. Older digital Leicas have somewhat open-source firmware, too.

This way these Pentax cameras can be modified for a very, very long time, after official Ricoh Pentax firmware have been ceased, as long as the body/mechanics can still handle them. This is how many believe modern computing should be implemented.

SMC-F 70-210 or SMC-A 70-200 for Yosemite?

I don't have an experience with the A 70-200mm but I also have the Pentax-F 70-210mm and that lens is highly recommended. I haven't used it extensively yet but I am truly satisfied with my test shots. Sharpness, AF speed (with the K-3), contrast and saturation are all highly satisfactory.

Just like the wonderful Pentax-F 35-70mm, though, an adequate hood is needed to keep excess glare out.

I answered "No" as I wear my K-3 + one lens wherever I go. I use a Minolta Maxxum strap for comfort and adjustment. I do this when doing groceries, traveling, relaxing, dining, meetings, etc. When asked, "Do you like photography as a hobby?" I always answer, "It's not a hobby now, it's a lifestyle."

Not bad actually. I do a lot of macros and oftentimes the lens outside for some long telephoto fun in the morning and at night. The CA is negligible because the photos are just wonderful. It's built like a limited lens but doesn't have the Limited designation.

I use flash when doing macro so I stop-down most of the time.

The usual Pentax DA lenses are made of metal/aluminium alloy. Even the smc 100mm Macro WR is built like a limited lens.

Here's a short video you may like. The music was made a Japanese Pentaxian.

Good to know. I tend to see the difference in rendering with the Pentax DSLRs in terms of how they represent the gradients. Many other cameras I've tried have a sort of "flat" look as many have a preference on showing of the dynamic range instead of naturalness. I find it hard to explain but my images with the Pentax DSLRs have been very kind to my eyes, natural/real and I don't get bored of the images a year after haha.

Ah from what I gather, Ricoh GR users tend to see a lot of similarities with the Pentax, too. Even before having a Pentax DSLR, I could see similarities between the two. It's not surprising though as they are from the same umbrella company.

That's good! I also get some questions from non-Pentaxians as to why the images/prints are a bit more organic than usual. It's hard to answer that, of course. Perhaps those who aren't used to looking at images like us photographers are the most objective judges.
