Viewfinder Depth of Field

Thank you! Very helpful. Regarding going from 1.7 to 1.4, I was more thinking of the viewfinder being in a shallower DOF hence it looking more "obvious" whether u nailed focus or not. But I do understand that a shorter focal length makes it more forgiving.

Good plan, thanks!

I'm using a Pentax LX with one of the standard stock prisms and focusing scree and seems to be well calibrated.

Oh true, that would also be a big factor for sure, since a lot of the shots I missed focus in were low light situation where the shutter speeds were probably around 1/60th. I'm also definitely practicing nailing steady shots.

Hi all, I'm still very much learning film photography, and one big problem I'm struggling with is critical focus. My focus always seems to be off slightly, making the image softer than they could be. I am actually looking to replace my prescription and I have already max'd the diopter setting. But apart from my obvious eyesight issue, I'm wondering if the aperture through the prism and lens is in fact wide open (largest setting for the lens)? I'm shooting with the M 50mm 1.7, and I'm also wondering if switching to a 50mm 1.4 would make the focusing any noticeably easier?

Additional info: I have the split center prism with microprism ring, so any additional advice is welcome and appreciated!

Thanks!

I do have a new Kodak H35 camera but it's more of a toy point and shoot... A Pen E of Pen F might be an interesting choice

I've brought a point and shoot and Canon QL19 to venues before and the security didn't seem to mind. Hmm, yeah I might look into that, not sure how I would get a press pass though.

I do have a QL19 actually, although I'm probably selling that since the focusing patch is a bit hard to see and the shutter speeds are quite a bit slower across the board. The shutter release button is also bit too stiff for my liking.

Update: Rene at Service Camera Pro in Montreal did an overhaul of the camera and it seems to be fully functional! According to him it was dirty dial contacts and general internal wear from age. Luckily, he offers 6-month warranty and the original seller covered the repair cost!

Compact Film Camera for Concert Photography

Hi all!

I'm looking to find a good option for photographing small venue concerts as I go to a lot of them and 90% of the time they don't let me in with any relatively compact SLR or rangefinder, basically anything with a substantial lens. It would also be great to just chuck in my bag when I go outside without taking up too much space.

I want film because I love its grain and imperfection for capturing these kinds of moments, but I do want to expose and focus correctly. So what are my options for a compact and quiet camera that will focus and expose correctly - whether manual or auto I don't mind, as long as it's not fixed aperture or fixed focusing distance.

I was considering a Rollei 35 but I'm not confident to zone focus close to wide open. A Contax T seems like a good option and I love it's engineering, but it's pricey.

Thanks!

May buy an LX soon - what should I look out for?

Also bought an LX recently from a Japanese ebay seller with 100% rating, rated as NM. It was in rougher shape than NM but acceptable, although turned out it had shutter issue with electronically controlled speeds and I had to send my camera out for repair. Fortunately the repairer was very experienced and did an overhaul with 6-month warranty, and the seller refunded me the repair cost ($250 CAD). So yeah, definitely buy the LX from reputable sellers with return policy.

However, I would not attribute this to them not having a full understanding of the word, it's something a lot of sellers of second hand market do across different hobbies. Anyone into record collecting knows how few NM records are actually NM... If anything, Japanese record sellers tend to grade conservatively, their "VG+ (very good+)" are usually NM for the rest of the world.

Pentax LX Shutter Lag on Electronic Speeds

Thanks for all the responses, they were very helpful! I have sent the camera to Service Camera Pro at Montreal who was willing to have a crack at it. There were some great suggestions from yall that I will try if the repairing doesn't go well.

The mirror doesn't get stuck, the curtain is the one that gets stuck, and this also happens when mirror is locked up, so I assume it shouldn't be a mirror issue?

I have consulted Eric from pentaxs.com and he simply said it was an electronics issue. To be fair to the seller, this happens quite rarely and he had a video posted of him going through the speeds and they were all fine. Even right now it's kind of hard to replicate this consistently.

Yes the batteries are fresh, although I haven't tried to use a different pair of new ones.

That's also what the camera store employee with 3 LXs said, it might be an issue with the ISO dial. I will have to try that.

Pentax LX Shutter Lag on Electronic Speeds

Hi all, I have purchased a later version (new shutter lock design) Pentax LX from a reputable Japanese Ebay seller a couple weeks ago. Everything works great except that occasionally the shutter curtain will get stuck for a long time. I have yet to find a consistent pattern to replicate this, but this is what I've noticed:

1. This has only happened in Auto mode and speeds below the "x" in other words electronically controlled speeds.
2. It happens more often after not using it for a day or two.
3. This has happened with or without film, with or without lens cap on, with or without the back open, and with or without mirror lockup.

This was happening like every third fires at 1/15s this afternoon, and when I took it to Downtown Camera in Toronto, it happened less frequently. An employee there who owns three LXs told me that it might be an issue with the electronics or the dial contact, and referred me to Eric at pentaxs.com. Unfortunately, Eric said he no longer repairs LXs. After I got home, it happened even less frequently but I was able to capture this on video where I was shooting at 1/60s with mirror locked up Imgur: The magic of the Internet. I'm in contact with the Ebay seller who offered to cover repair cost if it's not too expensive, but I don't even know where to repair this. And I hope I can avoid returning this because I really loved using the LX in my limited time with it plus I had spent a large portion of the cost on shipping and duties and taxes which would go down the drain.

What do you recommend me to do? Any help/advice is appreciated! Thanks!

I have just gotten a LX from ebay, and I have some questions as well.

1. I read that the light meter should stay on 25s after lighting pressing the shutter and that if it stays on for 30+ secs, it could be sign that the electronics are on their way out. Mine stays on for exactly 33 seconds, should that be of any worry?
2. I think I have a later version (and it's what the seller labelled it as) with the newer shutter lock design, but pressing my viewfinder lock button doesn't engage the light meter like people say it would on a newer model.
3. Lastly, the shutter speeds in aperture priority mode is way slower than indicated in the vf, but I also read that this is normal when there is no film inside, is that true? All the shutter speeds seem accurate in manual mode.

Thanks!

Hi everyone!

I had gotten into photography a couple months ago through my girlfriend. Because of my passion for the analog format (music for example), I went straight into film while having no digital experience either. I have to say I have been quite hooked! I was shooting mostly with a point-and-shoot and more recently on a Canon QL17 rangefinder (a total of 3 rolls so far). Last week I bit the bullet and bought a Pentax LX from Japan hence me coming here! Will be posting a thread about some questions I have with the camera, but meanwhile here are some photos I'm proud of even though they are nothing spectacular :)

Cheers,
