Taken years ago on my fist Pentax DSLR. I was intrigued by the way the orchid seems to attract bees by impersonating the face of a bee and providing a ready landing pad.

Southern skies as we see them in the Kgalagadi desert on a clear night. The two bright stars in the center are the pointers (alpha and beta centauri). Coal sack to the right of center. Southern cross just to right of coal sack. Southern pole at bottom center. Eta carinae at bottom right and Omega centauri top, towards the right.
K5 iis, 21mm f3.2 at f3.2, 15s, ISO3200 adjusted in Lightroom.

I would get a light monopod and keep it on the lens all the time. I use a good carbon fiber monopod like this, attached to my heavy 150-450 all the time when I walk about looking for birds. It makes a sturdy handle, and you can carry the gear on your shoulder. I find it even works at air shows etc. where you do not have the monopod touching the ground. The long shaft acts as a stabilizer. I have hiked mountains this way. I even use it in my car when driving around in game parks and shooting through the window. Before I had the 150-450 I also used the 300A this way and initially also on a K20D. I must say when I upgraded to the K5iis things became a lot easier. Also, the 300A is somewhat soft wide open (not unusual for a long lens). I usually go 1 stop smaller than wide open and try to take a few shots also at f8, where most long lenses are best even if you have more noise. (This also applies to the 150-450. If you upgrade you can use the same technique.) You have to shoot raw, you will be sorry later if you do not---tools to fix noise in raw shots are improving fast and you can pull a lot of detail out of the shadows and highlights of the raw file of a K20D.
Good luck.
BTW your photos are not bad at all, don't be so hard on yourself, it is a disease we all have!

THANKS Robin. I shot these birds for about 5 days non-stop and this was the best of the lot. Your comment and the many nominations are appreciated.

I have the 1.4 converter and I tried it extensively with my 150-450 on both K5iis and K3iii. I find my pics look sharper without the converter and cropped. You do not have the 1 stop penalty and the movement sensitivity is less. Also less prone to focus faults.

I use the same combination and after a while decided to invest in a carbon fibre monopod. It was expensive but a very good investment. I always have it attached even when shooting handheld. It provides a good grip and helps with stabilizing, especially if you have it somewhat extended. If you are waiting and watching through the viewfinder (a big part of birding and a good reason to stick to optical viewfinders) it gives your arms a break. 😁 Also when walking around you can carry it all on your shoulder, but you may want to get a shoulder pad! I have carried mine like this up mountains, in ponds, forests etc. for many hours. I also find the monopod very useful when I am photographing from a vehicle. I have a window mount but I never use it, the monopod is more flexible.

Driving through Kruger National Park I came across a very sleepy elephant herd. The baby was awake. Raw file converted to black and white with LR.

The K3iii and 150-450 is an amazing combination. On the K5iis I used central spot focus, half button press and recompose. Took my a good while to learn to trust AF.C and auto zone on the K3iii. Seems that even if the little squares that light up on the viewfinder to indicate focus is not precisely on the eye, you still get good results.

I suggest you read the articles by Kobie Coetzee on the K3iii forum thread.
