Vintage M*/A* 300mm's vs. modern 55-300's

If you neither need AF nor a better close focusing distace, then go for the M*4/300 again or for the optically identical (except for sklightly better coatings) A*4/300.

The SYMPATHY or even LOVE for a lens is an important factor that results in more joy when taking pictures and thus results in more and better pictures. :)

Any Pentax 300mm prime lens since the M*4/300 is excellent. However, the minimum focusing distance (4 meters) of the M* or of the A*4/300 (which I have) may at times be quite limiting. The same is true for the lack of autofocus.
Thus I also would recommend either the F*4.5/300 (which I have) or the optically identical FA* 4.5/300 (which I had).

Another excellent and not too expensive alternative which I can recommend from my own experience if you do not need autofocus is the Tamron Adaptall 2.8/300 LD (60B) (see at Tamron SP Adaptall-2 300mm F/2.8 LD-IF Model 60B): Focuses down to 2.5 meters, offers f2.8, and includes dedicated 1.4X and 2x teleconverters if you find the comptete package.

However, for travelling my choice is the HD4.5-6.3/55-300 ED PLM WR RE. It is smaller and also much better than any other PENTAX 55-300mm zoom (I had two other versions), especially at the long end. Not the same as the * 300mm primes but all the same very good.

From my experience with my copy of the A1.2/50 I would say that at f1.2 the wine bottle is not exactly in focus. :-)

Generally I prefer the DA*1.4/55 in most situations as it is much easier and faster to use on a digital body unless you really have sufficient time to carefully focus manually.

Also I would like to mention that on my K3/K3II with a cheap chinese 1.51x mangifying eyepiece AND with the correct diopter setting, manually focusing on the matte screen works much better for me than the green hexagon.

Ricoh XR-P and XR-20sp (or KR-30sp) shutter not engaged immediately

I also have a XR-P which shows similar behaviour: If the camera wasn't used for some time, the advance lever has to be operated two or more times so that the shutter is ready. Afte firing, advancing once is sufficient. Thus I always operate the advance lever directly after firirg the shutter.

Your Ricoh cameras like mine probably need a check-up, but it does not seem to be very urgent... :-)
