If there's dust that won't go away after trying DR or a dust blower, I clean my sensor using SensorFilm. You Tube |

Tim is correct about the built-in flash's pre-flash triggering your strobe prematurely. The only way to get the built-in flash to properly trigger the strobe is to mount a lens that isn't in the A position. Even if you did, the flash would then fire at full power, which might affect your scene.
I'm assuming your Cowboy Studio strobe came with a PC sync cable; if so, you could use it with an adapter like this: http://amzn.to/eaMwFlBy
There are also wireless triggers that you can use, but they are considerably more expensive.
Make sure to set your camera to Manual, with shutter speed no faster than 1/180s.

I recorded some random video clips from my rental K-5, and compiled it into a short video.
Overall, I'm okay with the K-5's video performance. I'm still not happy about the lack of manual control, but I can live with the 30p max frame-rate at 720p. |

Makes sense to me. The phase AF takes place on a different sensor, which isn't on the CMOS sensor. So unless that sensor was perfectly calibrated to the sensor plane distance, any defect on that lens could cause FF/BF on phase AF. Since Live View AF (except phase-detect) uses the actual CMOS sensor for focusing, it's going to be sharp since focusing is done at the plane where the image will be captured; focus issues on the lens will be corrected at the sensor.
My First DA* 16-50 front-focused beyond what my K-7 could correct. But it worked great in LiveView.

Correct, the AF adjustment feature will only offset phase detect focusing. Live View focusing (contrast detect, face detect) will not be affected, as these are sensor based algorithms.

In their review of the K-5, NeoCamera posted a little interactive section showing off the differences in the 3 sharpness settings, through the entire range of each mode. This should clearly show you the difference: Pentax K-5 Sharpness Settings | Neocamera

Definitely appears to be fluorescent lighting. Based on the EXIF, you were shooting at 1/1250s. Fluroescent lighting usually flickers on and off at twice the frequency of your current (usually either 1/120s or 1/100s, depending where you live). Because your shutter speed was faster than the cycle time for the light, your camera captured the time between an on and off phase. If you sync up your shutter speed to 1/60s or 1/50s (again depending on your mains frequency), you shouldn't see that band appear anymore, as the fluorescent light will have fully cycled on/off, thus evenly filling the scene with light.
The other issue w/ fluorescent lighting is that the spectrum of light isn't nearly as wide as other light, so you'll still need to fix the white balance with the image.
In short, this is not a problem with your K-5; any camera can experience this issue, as it's mainly due to shutter-speed .

The problem is that if you want to make your video in 24p, you will need to do some re-encoding of your 25p to 24p. This could be as simple as conforming your master to 24p; this would slow down the video a bit (24p-conformed video would run 4% longer than 25p source).
In short, for the average Joe with no serious movie editing skills, this difference shouldn't matter, as they wouldn't care much. However, for those trying to do serious editing, especially with multiple cameras, keeping the video synced becomes a slight issue that requires extra work in post.
