Its a testament to Pentaxs' autofocus that you managed to get these shots indoors through a foggy viewfinder. And yeah, damn those chairs, always trying to steal the limelight, what is that? Mahogany?:D.

Nice work though, i thought i was looking at another brand for a second with the aggresive filter look, but overall i think she would be very pleased with quality of the shots. 1 to 3 look a little front focused to my eye though, the last one, maybe apply some clean-up to the small but noticeable particles on her black shirt?

Macro Too much space around lizard

I like where its going. I cant help but feel how it would've looked with a bit more space to the left edge of the picture, but as photographers 'in the moment' we run with what we capture in the frame right? (unless you're a photoshop magician! hehe)

As to lightroom you can google selective masking with the adjustment brush, its the brush icon in the develop menu at the top. Just select the brush when in the Develop Menu set (or shortcut K) and the very first option is a drop down menu that allows you choose which effect the brush will apply.
For blurring out you'll want the Sharpness menu, then just drag the Sharpness slider into the negative depending on how much blur you want to apply.

All the best.

Actually you know what? After seeing it away from the light coloured background of the forum i think the cropping is just fine here. It was interesting enough for me to take a second look when i saw it framed with a more contrasting background. Keep up the good work!

Theory why FF taking so long

One reason might be because they have so many full frame lenses in circulation that very few people would go out and bother buying any new lenses they'd make. The current used FF lenses would probably double in price like they did when the K10D came out and Pentax wont see any of those funds. Maybe they will get over this by releasing it in a Ricoh proprietary mount or something?

Yeah its ridiculous, i was looking for a cheap workstation from Aus for around 8 hundo then after the tax and gst it totalled to nearly 1700. NZ's prices are so far jacked up its like they want you to buy locally, which would be cool if our wages werent still stuck in the 80's lol.

You should also be aware that Facebook is the new black market for peddling stolen goods. Generally i'd stay away from buying anythng from facebook locally as well in NZ as the police are tracking goods sold through there.

Its nice photo but it lacks the impact of sharpness for this type of shot. The point of focus, the flies are too high up the composition also.

Experiment with cropping and if in doubt the rule of thirds is a fail safe way to compose your images.

Advice Needed - Photographing a book in a particular style

I have used a 50 together with a copystand for repro work, 50 is too long for anything in the vicinity of A4 with the stand at its highest adjustment setting. The normal routine for art reproduction is to have the peice mounted/ hanging vertically on a wall, camera on tripod, lamps or floods set at 45 degrees either side.

For a open book though, a little difficult but it still can be done by angling the book at 45 degrees or less, at ground level, camera angled at teh same degree downwards. You just need a way to hold the book stationary so it doesnt slide off whatever backing your using.

If any of the books are on a glossy stock you might want to do one of the following:

a) Diffuse the light be putting something transparent between the lights and the books (but not between the camera and subject hehe). Tracing paper, baking paper, white sheets, white tshirt will work if you dont have a diffuser(2).

b) Change the angle of the lights so they bouce into cards that are angled at 45 degrees to the books.

Either will stop hotspots and reflections showing up on glossy stock (for straight on shots)

The no fuss way of course would be to bust out some van damme splits over 2 chairs facing down directly at teh peice in the middle:p (or just use a ladder so no one gets hurt, its too early in the year for stunts hehe). Just beware of casting shadows...

Poll: Print vs. data-only esthetics

"Is there an esthetic difference for data-only vs. printed images?"

What Frank said about the screen displaying light (millions of colours) vs the limitations of pigments and dyes.

Difference in sentimentality in favour of a physical peice, but aesthetically i have to say screen display looks better (like looking at slides through a loupe on a light table).

"So the question is... has the emerging digital-only photography created a new esthetic criteria,..."

Yes. Pixel peeping.

"has it made the traditional esthetic standards (composition, lighting, content, point of view, etc) irrelevant?"

No. IMO Photography is still an art medium and as such requires those very skillsets, moreso now then ever before, to stand out among the "crowd".

For 500 bucks you should be able to pick up something decent (used but well looked after) in the market place on this site. If you can afford it what you want with that is a 50mm macro lense (M 50 macro F4 is highly recommended starting point for copying, also affordable).

A 50mm has a flat focal plane that is highly suited to copy work (hence the term "copy lens"). Macro versions will ensure your text is highly legible and tack sharp. The only downside is with teh cropped sensor you will need to compensate with the distance to subject as 50mm goes slightly telephoto.

Looking for advise for buying lens for interior shooting

You want something fast and wide. You have a few 2.8 zoom ranges to choose from (Pentax 16 - 50, sigma 17 - 70, tamron 17 - 50). Not that much faster wideopen but better IQ. You could always try using a fast fifty if lowlight is huge priority. And get yourself a good tripod, regardless of what lense you choose, makes a world of difference indoors in lowlight.

Add to that when it comes to enlarging photos, you will wish you used a tripod if you have the slightest hint of camera movement. Most images look fine at 6x8, go 12 x 16 or larger and imperfections start looking nastier.

Poll: who keeps their strap on the camera?

i keep the strap on the camera as a nifty little support for low light shooting:

Wrap the strap around your right elbow and apply pressure by pushing up, elbow tucked in (you'll have to extend it to suit obviously). Use the free hand as you would normally by supporting the lens. Great way to elimanate camera shake where SR alone can be hit and miss.

I dont think its their presence in the DSLR marketplace that puts these companies in almost every major sporting event, especially Samsung and Panasonic who have a strong market presence in communications and multimedia. Makes them suitable sponsors for broadcast events. Surprising Ricohs in there..dont they just make photocopiers nowadays?

Edit: Ok, so their one of the largest office and business equipment suppliers as well...

Pentax marketing mistake :0

I think it was supposed to end at ready. Kind of hard to beleive that got through so many channels without being picked up once. A editor or copywriter would of sent that to the Marketing people. The marketing people would have sent that to a layout and packaging designer, they then would ve sent that back to the marketing people a for a second look to sign off on then off to the printers, who would then send it back to marketing people for a third time!

The main thing is to keep it consistent. Borders are nice, but bear in mind the star of the show is the work itself. Subtlety is key here. For portfolios if your going to do borders avoid anything flamboyant or artsy, clean simple lines work best.

The best way to save you money and time is to contact them first and ask. Printers are only too happy to point you in the right direction because that means they dont have to worry about potential misprints or problem shooting.

Most printers will have their settings on their websites with downloadable colour profiles that you can install and assign to your image file, Do this before you start editing. This is important because what you see on screen will not come out the same colour if your profiles are mismatched or the profile is assigned after you edit (in photoshop goto : View > Proof Setup > whatever profile to preview the colours as they will print).

how about the da 55 - 300? Between these 2 lenses you will have a better idea of the focal lengths you prefer and can make a more informed decision as to the which primes/ zoom range you could spend more money on.

By all accounts the 55 - 300 is a great lens, and can be sold on for not much less than you spent when you decide to make the move to specialty ranges...

The ideal Pentax model range

Unfortunately, from experience, thats exactly how it goes, more so from the Marketing Managers, who know absoultely nothing about photography outside of "Brand names" who also do the hiring. Canikon have the enviable position of not having to compete for new customers beleive it or not. Alot of people dont understand the dynamics of advertising dollars, most of all marketing people oddly enough. When Canikon advertise their not looking to get more customers on board, thats what publicity and word of mouth is for. Advertisings sole purpose is to keep customers exactly where they are. A returning customer is the bread and butter of any business.

Agree, the biggest problem with Pentax is their known now as the "Budget Brand" nowadays. Thats great for customers who know the company's history but the fine line between Quality on a Budget and Budget Quality are inevitably mixed in the mind of prospective consumers who have no prior knowledge of the company (new customers).

Hehe, here in NZ i have witnessed a few such purchases going into our local Trade site. It was obvious they had brought into the image of professionalism only to be somewhat baffled when they produced the same level of photography they had produced with their P&S camera's. Like wise, i had a friend who had a Pentax K10 and traded it off because their pictures didnt look professional enough...a new brand later the images looked the same but he was quite adament there was a increase in quality. Perception is fickle, but if you so happen to own a business or a product or a service, perception is everything!

The ideal Pentax model range

Totally makes no sense for Pentax to put out so many ranges. For a small-ish company to be playing catch up to the estabilished market leaders is a sure fire way to sink the ship. Maybe not tommorow, but eventually the expansion costs will come back to bite the company in the behind.

Pentax needs to narrow their focus, not expand it. create a new category and dominate that, weather it be affordable medium format (a category no one has touched to date) or the entry level (where pentax are already doing quite well). The semi pro and Pro models are long sailed ships. Ask your average joe blogs which dslr camera maker they think best fits the "pro" image and the ingrained image of a Canon or a Nikon will inevitably pop up. No amount of money in the world is going to change that perception (all the money spent to date by Canikon has been to own that exact perception, in other words...the others came to the party maybe a decade too late.)

They need a niche market, not more models.

FA 50 2.8 Macro or the much cheaper used variants Super TAK/M 50 f4 macro. Regardles if you do macro or not these are some of the sharpest lenses Pentax have made. The DA Limited 70 is not too shabby as well.
